For a Canadian resident, sending cryptocurrency to family or another person abroad is generally a taxable disposition because ownership changes. Moving coins between wallets you own generally is not. For a taxable transfer, calculate the crypto’s Canadian-dollar fair-market value at the date and time sent, determine whether the activity is on capital or business account, and report it through the matching CRA process. CRA guidance does not create a separate tax category called a “remittance.”
Start with the ownership question
The destination country does not decide whether Canadian tax applies. The first question is who owns the receiving wallet after the transfer.
| Transaction | Canadian tax treatment to analyze | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Move from one wallet to another wallet you own | Generally no taxable disposition | Ownership has not changed. |
| Send Bitcoin or another crypto-asset to a family member abroad | Disposition; calculate the result in Canadian dollars | The recipient becomes the owner, even if the transfer is a gift or family support. |
| Give crypto to another person as a gift | Disposition at the transfer-time fair-market value | CRA’s examples of dispositions include transfers of ownership by gift or donation. |
| Pay a person or merchant with crypto | Disposition | Crypto is exchanged for goods, services or a debt being settled. |
| Exchange one crypto-asset for another | Disposition | Trading one asset for another is a disposition even when no Canadian dollars enter your bank account. |
This article addresses Canadian residents. Residency, the nature of the activity, and the facts of each transaction can change the result; keep records that allow you to support the treatment you use.

In ordinary language, a remittance is money or value sent to someone elsewhere, often a relative. For tax purposes, CRA looks through that label. A transfer can be a gift, family support, payment, donation or exchange. The decisive event is generally the transfer of ownership of the crypto-asset.

Transfer between your own wallets
CRA says that some transactions do not result in a taxable disposition, including a transfer between wallets that you own. Record the move anyway. A later sale, gift or payment will require the asset’s adjusted cost base (ACB), and wallet-to-wallet records help prove that the coins remained yours.
Transfer to a family member overseas
When a spouse, parent, child or other relative receives the asset in their own wallet, ownership has changed. CRA’s cited guidance does not provide a blanket personal-remittance exemption. Analyze the transfer as a disposition, value it in Canadian dollars at that time, and report the resulting gain or loss.
Gift, donation, payment or exchange
Different labels can lead to different surrounding rules, but each can involve a disposition. A gift or donation is still a transfer of ownership. Paying a bill or buying goods with crypto is an exchange. Swapping one token for another is also an exchange. Capture the purpose and recipient in your records so the transaction can be explained later.

Step-by-step workflow for every transfer
-
Identify the asset and transaction
Write down the asset type, number of units, sending and receiving wallet addresses, date and exact time, exchange or wallet used, transaction ID, and the recipient’s relationship or business role. Note whether the receiving wallet is yours, jointly controlled, or controlled by someone else. Save the confirmation screen and the blockchain record where available.
-
Decide whether ownership changed
Compare the owner before and after the transfer. A move between wallets you own is generally not a disposition. A transfer to another person is. If you cannot establish who controls the receiving wallet, preserve the facts and obtain professional advice rather than assuming the move is tax-free.
-
Determine the Canadian-dollar fair-market value
Establish a reasonable fair-market value (FMV) at the date and time of the disposition. You might use a reliable exchange quotation for the same asset and time, or another defensible pricing source. CRA allows a reasonable method; apply that method consistently and retain the quotation, currency conversion, time zone and calculation. Do not leave the value in U.S. dollars or in the token itself.
-
Reconstruct the adjusted cost base
For a capital-account disposition, gather the Canadian-dollar ACB of the units transferred. Include the acquisition cost and the allocation of related transaction costs under your chosen recordkeeping method. If the units came from several purchases, identify which lots and ACB calculation produced the amount. Wallet balances, exchange statements and prior tax workpapers should reconcile to the units sent.

Calculate the disposition result
For capital treatment, the basic calculation is:
Capital gain or loss = proceeds of disposition − adjusted cost base − disposition costs.
For a gift or other ownership transfer, use the transfer-time CAD FMV as the disposition value for this calculation. A positive result is a capital gain; a negative result is a capital loss. Keep the unit count and the timestamp beside the calculation so the value can be reproduced.
-
Classify the activity as capital or business
Most personal investing is analyzed on capital account, but CRA examines the facts. Regularity, continuity, profit-seeking conduct, the taxpayer’s knowledge, and the way the activity is organized can indicate business activity. CRA states that even an isolated transaction can be an “adventure or concern in the nature of trade.” If the activity is a business, the full business profit or loss follows the business-income route rather than the capital-gain inclusion rule.
-
Report on the appropriate forms
For a capital disposition, use the crypto-asset category in T1 Schedule 3 and carry the resulting taxable capital gain or allowable loss to the return as instructed. For business activity, calculate the business result and report it through the business-income forms and Guide T4002. Keep the transaction-level schedule supporting the totals entered on the return.

Check GST/HST separately
GST/HST is a supply question, not an automatic consequence of sending support to a relative. A GST/HST registrant that accepts crypto for taxable goods or services must determine the tax using the crypto’s FMV at the time of the exchange and collect, file and remit where required. CRA’s guidance on taxable supplies does not describe a personal support transfer as a taxable supply.
-
Correct an earlier omission
If a previous return left out crypto income or gains, CRA says tax, penalties and interest may apply. You can request an adjustment; where the conditions are met, the Voluntary Disclosures Program may be available. Gather the original return, corrected calculations, transaction records and an explanation of how the omission occurred before filing a correction.
Capital-account treatment
How the taxable amount is determined
After calculating the capital gain or loss for each disposition, combine the results for the year as required on Schedule 3. CRA states that one-half of a capital gain is included in income as the taxable capital gain. The other half is not included as a taxable capital gain. Keep the full gain calculation because the return needs the underlying proceeds, ACB and costs.

Capital losses
Capital losses generally offset taxable capital gains under the capital-loss rules. CRA’s crypto-asset guidance states that net capital losses can be carried back three years or carried forward indefinitely. A loss from one remittance therefore is not automatically an income deduction against salary or other ordinary income; its use depends on the capital-loss rules and available gains.

If you send only part of a holding, allocate the ACB to the units transferred and leave the balance attached to the units still owned. Do not use the original purchase price for every later transfer. A lot-by-lot or pooled method can work, but the method must be reasonable, documented and applied consistently.
Business-income treatment
Crypto activity can be business activity when the overall conduct shows an intention or capacity to earn profits and transactions occur with regularity or continuity. Indicators can include frequent trading, a plan to profit from short-term price movements, specialized market knowledge, significant time devoted to trading, and business-like records. No single indicator decides the issue.
When the facts support business treatment, report the full net business profit or loss through the business-income route and Guide T4002. A transfer to a relative can still be part of the business accounting if the crypto was held as inventory or used in the business. Do not apply the one-half capital-gain inclusion to a business profit.
Because classification is fact-specific, retain evidence of your purpose and conduct: trading policies, frequency reports, financing, software logs, advertising, bookkeeping and the separation (or lack of separation) between personal and business wallets.
Where the information goes on your Canadian return
| Situation | Primary CRA route | Information to retain |
|---|---|---|
| Personal investing; ownership transfer produces a capital gain or loss | T1 Schedule 3, crypto-asset category; carry the resulting taxable capital gain or allowable loss to the return as directed | CAD FMV, ACB, disposition costs, units, time, transaction ID and valuation support |
| Activity is a crypto trading or other business | Business-income forms and Guide T4002; report the full business profit or loss | Revenue, inventory or ACB records, expenses, business-purpose evidence and transaction ledger |
| GST/HST registrant supplies taxable goods or services for crypto | GST/HST return and related reporting for the taxable supply | Supply invoice, crypto FMV at exchange time, tax collected, registration details and remittance records |
| Previously omitted income or gains | Return adjustment or, if eligible, the Voluntary Disclosures Program | Original filing, corrected schedules, calculations, payment and explanation |
Schedule 3 is not a place to list every wallet movement. It captures the results of dispositions that belong on the capital account. Keep the detailed ledger in case CRA asks how the totals were produced.
Worked examples
Example: Bitcoin gift to a parent abroad
Assume a Canadian resident sends 0.10 BTC to a parent’s wallet. The units have a documented ACB of CAD 2,000. At the exact transfer time, the 0.10 BTC is worth CAD 6,500, and directly attributable disposition costs are CAD 50.

- Proceeds (transfer-time FMV): CAD 6,500
- Less ACB: CAD 2,000
- Less disposition costs: CAD 50
- Capital gain: CAD 4,450
- Taxable capital gain at the one-half inclusion stated by CRA: CAD 2,225
The fact that the parent lives outside Canada and receives family support does not, by itself, remove the ownership transfer from the disposition analysis.
Example: Moving coins to a hardware wallet you own
A taxpayer moves 0.10 BTC from an exchange account to a personally controlled hardware wallet. The sender and receiver are the same taxpayer. This is generally a non-taxable wallet-to-wallet move under CRA’s example. The taxpayer should still save the transaction ID, addresses and balances so the ACB can be traced when the coins are eventually sold, gifted or spent.

Example: Frequent trading treated as business activity
A trader buys and sells crypto continuously, follows a written profit strategy, and maintains business-like records. The trader later sends inventory to a relative as support. If the overall facts support business treatment, the transfer is accounted for in the business records and the resulting profit or loss follows the T4002 business-income route. The one-half capital-gain inclusion does not apply to that business profit.
Example: Crypto received for a taxable service
A GST/HST registrant performs a taxable service and accepts crypto instead of Canadian dollars. The registrant records the crypto’s FMV at the exchange time, calculates the applicable GST/HST on the taxable supply, issues the required documentation, and reports and remits the tax when required. This commercial supply analysis is separate from a person-to-person support transfer.

Keep one record for each disposition and enough information to reconcile all wallets and exchanges. CRA-focused records should include:
- Asset name and network, units transferred, and transaction or hash ID.
- Sending and receiving wallet addresses and who controlled each wallet.
- Date, exact time and time zone of the transfer.
- Canadian-dollar FMV, pricing source, exchange rate and the method used to convert from another currency.
- Exchange name or wallet software, account statement and screenshots or downloadable trade confirmations.
- Adjusted cost base, acquisition dates, lot or pooling method, and the calculation allocating ACB to partial transfers.
- Disposition costs, network charges treated in your calculation, and evidence of payment.
- Purpose of the transfer: gift, family support, donation, payment, exchange or business use.
- A description of the counterparty and relationship, without relying on a wallet address alone.
- Opening and closing wallet balances and a reconciliation to exchange statements.
- For business activity, trading frequency, strategy, revenue, expenses and evidence supporting the business classification.
- For GST/HST supplies, invoices, FMV at the exchange time, tax collected and filing records.
Use a consistent valuation and ACB method from year to year. If a source changes its historical data, save the original export or capture and document why your selected quote is reasonable.

Reporting the amount sent as income
The transferred value is not automatically your taxable income. For capital treatment, calculate the gain or loss from FMV, ACB and costs, then apply the capital-gain inclusion rules. Business activity uses a different calculation.
Using the wrong date or currency
A month-end price or a later bank conversion can materially differ from the transfer-time value. Capture the exact timestamp and convert to Canadian dollars using a reasonable, consistently applied method.
Losing the ACB trail
Exchange statements alone may not show coins moved through several wallets. Reconcile deposits, withdrawals, trades and transfers, and allocate ACB to the units actually sent.
Calling every transaction a capital gain
Frequent, organized, profit-seeking conduct can be business activity. Review the entire pattern, not just the single remittance, and retain evidence supporting the classification.
Putting wallet transfers on Schedule 3 without a disposition
Schedule 3 reports capital disposition results; it is not a log of every movement. A transfer between wallets you own is generally excluded from the disposition calculation, but the supporting record should remain in your files.
Confusing GST/HST with income tax
GST/HST depends on a registrant making a taxable supply. It does not turn a personal gift or family-support transfer into a taxable supply under the CRA description cited here. Examine the commercial activity separately.
Ignoring an earlier omission
Leaving a crypto gain or business amount off a prior return can lead to tax, penalties and interest. Request an adjustment or consider the Voluntary Disclosures Program when eligible instead of waiting for CRA to identify the omission.
Quick Recap
A practical annual checklist
- Export every exchange and wallet transaction for the tax year.
- Mark each movement as own-wallet, transfer to another person, gift, payment, exchange, donation or business transaction.
- For each ownership change, record the exact timestamp and CAD FMV.
- Reconcile units and calculate ACB and disposition costs.
- Decide whether the overall activity is capital or business and document the reasons.
- Prepare the Schedule 3 or T4002 workpapers, and separately review GST/HST obligations if you are a registrant making taxable supplies.
