You can recover a missed collectible or trophy in Stray without restarting the whole game. From the main menu, choose Start Game, select the save slot with your completed progress, and choose Select Chapter. Pick the chapter with the missing item, collect it, and play until the next autosave or checkpoint before leaving. That checkpoint is the practical safeguard that writes the pickup to your save.

Chapter Select remains available after the story, and replaying on the same save slot retains items you already earned. Use the chapter counters for Memories, keep a manual list for untracked activities, and verify each pickup after it saves.

The safe replay procedure

Use this sequence whenever you miss a Memory, Badge, or a chapter-based trophy requirement:

  1. Return to the main menu after finishing or pausing your current session.
  2. Choose Start Game.
  3. Select the save slot that contains your existing progress. Do not switch to a blank slot if you want your earlier collectibles and trophies to remain associated with the run.
  4. Choose Select Chapter.
  5. Read the chapter list and its Memory count. Select the chapter that still has an item outstanding.
  6. Replay the relevant section and collect the missing item or complete the qualifying interaction.
  7. Continue until the next autosave or checkpoint. Do not quit immediately after the pickup.
  8. Return to the menu and check the appropriate counter, inventory entry, or manual checklist before starting another chapter.

The important part is not merely touching the collectible. Remaining in the chapter long enough for a checkpoint gives the save system an opportunity to register it. If you leave before that point, the item may not be recorded even though you saw the collection animation.

What Chapter Select changes—and what it does not

Chapter replay is a cleanup tool, not a separate profile. On the same save slot, Stray retains items you have already obtained, so a second pass normally requires only the missing collectibles. You do not need to pick up every item again just because you loaded an earlier chapter.

Previously earned Badges can still appear as stickers on the cat’s backpack while you replay an earlier chapter. Their appearance confirms that the save slot still contains your earlier progress; it does not mean you must reacquire those Badges.

Chapter Select is also usable for trophy cleanup after the story. A missed Memory or Badge therefore does not require a complete new playthrough. Trophy requirements that depend on chapter activities can be finished by returning to the relevant chapter, provided you complete the activity and allow the result to save.

How to identify what you are missing

Use the Memory counters first

The Chapter Select list displays how many Memories have been found in each chapter and how many remain. Start with the lowest-numbered chapter whose counter shows a gap, then work forward. This avoids replaying later chapters when the missing Memory is earlier in the game.

The counter is a chapter-level total. It tells you that a Memory is missing, but not necessarily the room or route where it is located. Use a chapter-specific collectible guide or your own notes to narrow the search, then rely on the counter after the checkpoint to confirm the pickup.

Check Badges on both sides of the backpack

Badges appear as stickers on the cat’s backpack. Inspect both sides: the designs differ, and a sticker can be easy to overlook if you check only one view. The backpack display is useful for confirming what you already own, but it does not provide the same chapter-by-chapter missing count that Memories do.

Keep a manual list for Scratch Points and Nuzzles

There is no dedicated in-game tracker for Scratch Points or Nuzzles. Record each qualifying interaction as you complete it. Scratch Points are chapter-based: one qualifying scratch interaction in each chapter is enough for the requirement. Nuzzles are individual interactions with robots, so write down which robots you have already nuzzled rather than relying on a general completion percentage.

Use inventory tracking for Sheet Music and Energy Drinks

Sheet Music and Energy Drinks become trackable in the inventory after the relevant early-game unlock, according to the chapter guide. Once that inventory information is available, use it to distinguish collected items from items still missing. Before the unlock, maintain a temporary written list so you do not assume an item was counted simply because you remember visiting its location.

The complete collectible picture

PowerPyx’s 2022 guide counts 67 collectibles across 12 chapters. The total combines several different item types, so a single completion percentage is not enough to diagnose a gap.

Collectible or activity Total Where to track it Cleanup note
B-12 Memories 27 Chapter Select shows the number found in each chapter Replay only chapters whose counter has a gap
Badges 6 Sticker display on the cat’s backpack Inspect both sides of the backpack; previously earned Badges remain visible during replay
Scratch Points 12 No dedicated tracker One qualifying scratch interaction per chapter; keep a manual list
Nuzzles 10 No dedicated tracker Record the robots you have nuzzled
Sheet Music 8 Inventory tracking after the relevant early-game unlock Use inventory status after unlocking it; note earlier pickups manually
Energy Drinks 4 Inventory tracking after the relevant early-game unlock Confirm the inventory count after reaching a checkpoint
Total 67 Across 12 chapters Totals reported by PowerPyx in 2022

The different tracking methods explain why cleanup can feel inconsistent. Memories provide a visible chapter counter, Badges provide a visual backpack check, and the other activities require your own record or an inventory check.

A reliable cleanup workflow

1. Build a chapter checklist

Create a simple list with one line for each of the 12 chapters. For Memories, copy the found and remaining numbers shown by Chapter Select. Add separate columns for a Badge, Scratch Point, Nuzzle, Sheet Music item, and Energy Drink when those categories apply to your plan. Mark an item only after the game has reached a checkpoint.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For untracked activities, include the exact robot or interaction description from your notes rather than a vague mark such as “chapter complete.” That detail prevents you from repeating the same activity while overlooking another one.

2. Start with the smallest chapter number showing a gap

Choose the earliest unresolved chapter. Working in numerical order limits backtracking and gives you a predictable stopping point. If you remember the location of a later item but an earlier chapter still has an unconfirmed activity, finish the earlier chapter first so your checklist remains ordered.

3. Collect only what is missing

Because the same save slot retains prior pickups, you can pass previously completed locations without collecting them again. Concentrate on the missing Memory, Badge, or activity. For a chapter-based trophy, perform the required interaction even if you are replaying the chapter for a different collectible.

4. Trigger a save before leaving

After the collection animation or interaction, continue to the next autosave or checkpoint. This is the key save-safety step. Quitting from the pause menu immediately after a pickup leaves open the possibility that the game has not written the new state yet.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

5. Verify before moving on

Return to the main menu, open Chapter Select again, and check the Memory counter when applicable. For Badges, inspect the backpack. For Sheet Music and Energy Drinks, check the inventory after the relevant unlock. For Scratch Points and Nuzzles, update your manual list only after you have reached the checkpoint.

If the expected counter or inventory entry has not changed, replay that chapter and repeat the pickup. PowerPyx advises checking that a collectible has counted after a checkpoint or restart rather than assuming the first attempt was saved.

Saving, quitting, and changing chapters safely

Why the checkpoint matters

Chapter replay loads an earlier point in your existing save. The pickup itself is only useful if the save state records it. Reaching an autosave or checkpoint gives the game a defined moment at which to commit the change. Treat that checkpoint as the minimum exit condition for every cleanup run.

When to return to the menu

Once the checkpoint has been reached, you can return to the menu and choose another chapter. Verify the result first when the item has a visible indicator. If you are cleaning up an untracked activity, write it down immediately so you do not have to reconstruct the run later.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What to do after an uncertain quit

If you quit before a checkpoint, assume the pickup may be unconfirmed. Load the same save slot, enter the chapter again, and check the counter or inventory. If it is still missing, repeat the collection and stay until the next checkpoint. This costs less time than continuing through several chapters with an unreliable checklist.

Trophy cleanup without a full restart

The trophy roadmap confirms that Chapter Select remains available after the story and can be used to obtain missed collectibles and trophies. Plan trophy cleanup around the underlying requirement rather than around the trophy notification alone.

Collectible-linked trophies

For a trophy tied to Memories or Badges, use the visible Memory counter or backpack display to identify the missing chapter. Collect the item, reach a checkpoint, and then verify the save. The trophy can unlock during the replay or after the final required item is registered.

Chapter-activity trophies

Scratch Points and Nuzzles have no dedicated tracker, so your checklist is the source of truth. A Scratch Point requirement is satisfied by one qualifying scratch interaction in each chapter. For Nuzzles, track the individual robots you have completed and replay only the chapters containing unchecked entries.

After the final requirement

Do not stop at the moment the last interaction appears complete. Reach the next checkpoint, then return to the menu and confirm your checklist. This protects the final requirement from being lost and gives the trophy system a saved state from which to recognize completion.

Replay versus starting over

For a finished or nearly finished save, chapter replay is normally the efficient option. A full run is useful only when you want a separate playthrough or when your existing save slot is not the one containing your progress.

Approach Time impact Tracking reliability Save risk Trophy scope
Single-chapter replay Usually limited to the chapter containing the gap Strong for Memories and visual Badge checks; manual for Nuzzles and Scratch Points Low if you reach an autosave or checkpoint before leaving Can finish missed collectible and chapter-based trophy requirements
Full story replay Requires repeating chapters that may already be complete Allows a fresh checklist but does not add a tracker for untracked activities Requires the same careful checkpoint practice Can complete everything, but is unnecessary for an isolated miss

Use chapter replay first when the issue is a single Memory, Badge, or known chapter activity. Consider a separate full run only for a new personal challenge, a different save slot, or a deliberately clean checklist.

Troubleshooting common cleanup problems

The Memory count did not increase

  • Confirm that you loaded the save slot containing your original progress.
  • Check that you selected the intended chapter from Select Chapter.
  • Make sure the pickup was the item associated with that chapter, not one you already had.
  • Continue to the next autosave or checkpoint.
  • Return to Chapter Select and check the counter again.
  • If the number is unchanged, replay the chapter and repeat the collection, then verify after another checkpoint or restart.

A Badge is hard to confirm

  • Open the backpack display rather than relying on memory of the pickup animation.
  • Inspect both sides because Badge designs differ by side.
  • If the sticker is not present, replay the chapter on the same save slot and save at a checkpoint after collecting it.

You cannot tell whether a Scratch Point counted

There is no dedicated Scratch Point tracker. Use your 12-chapter checklist and mark a chapter only after performing one qualifying scratch interaction and reaching a checkpoint. If your notes are unclear, replay the chapter and complete the interaction again; the extra pass is safer than guessing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You cannot remember which robots you nuzzled

Because Nuzzles also lack a dedicated tracker, compare your notes with a chapter-by-chapter list of the robots you intended to complete. Replay chapters with uncertain entries and record each confirmed interaction immediately after the checkpoint.

The inventory does not show a Sheet Music or Energy Drink total

The inventory becomes useful for these items after the relevant early-game unlock. Before that point, use written notes. Once the inventory tracking is available, check it after the chapter has saved rather than immediately after the pickup.

A practical checklist you can copy

  • Save slot selected: ____________________
  • Chapter opened: ____________________
  • Memory counter before replay: ______ found / ______ remaining
  • Missing Memory location or note: ____________________
  • Badge needed: ____________________
  • Scratch Point completed: yes / no
  • Nuzzle target completed: ____________________
  • Sheet Music status: ____________________
  • Energy Drink status: ____________________
  • Checkpoint reached after pickup: yes / no
  • Counter, backpack, inventory, or notes verified: yes / no

Keep one checklist for the whole save slot. Starting a second list after every replay makes it easy to lose track of which entries were actually saved.

Bottom line

To clean up Stray, load your completed save through Start Game → save slot → Select Chapter, replay only the chapter with the missing requirement, and stay until the next autosave or checkpoint. Memories are confirmed by chapter counters, Badges by the backpack, Sheet Music and Energy Drinks by inventory after their unlock, and Scratch Points and Nuzzles by your own checklist. With that workflow, Chapter Select handles missed collectibles and trophy requirements without a full story restart.
