Change the video in the remote server’s playout or encoder system—not in a YouTube playlist. YouTube receives the live video from that system; its Studio playlists are separate collections of videos. Keep the encoder’s YouTube destination and stream key configured, and use the server-side system’s documented controls to replace the current item or update its queue.
Where do I change the video that’s playing in my YouTube livestream?
First identify what “playlist” means in your setup. A YouTube playlist is a viewer-facing collection managed in YouTube Studio. A remote playout queue is the sequence of files a server-side application plays into an encoder. Editing the YouTube playlist does not, according to YouTube’s documentation, replace media already being sent by an external encoder. YouTube’s playlist guidance covers the former; its encoder setup guidance describes the encoder as the source sending a stream to YouTube.
YouTube describes the role of the encoder this way: “An encoder converts your video into a digital format to stream on YouTube.” The encoder is configured with YouTube’s server URL and stream key, then sends its output to YouTube. The media selection happens upstream, in whichever remote playout system is producing that output.
How to replace or queue a video on the remote server
- Locate the actual playout system. Sign in to the remote server, cloud playout service, or application that is feeding the encoder. Find its schedule, playlist, queue, or source controls. The exact labels and location depend on the product.
- Check the system’s replacement behavior. Use its documented replace, next-item, playlist-reload, or source-switch feature, if available. Determine whether a change applies immediately, at the next item, or only after restarting or reconnecting the output. YouTube does not define a generic third-party queue command or hot-swap procedure.
- Make the change in the playout system. Replace the current media or edit the queue there. Keep the existing YouTube destination URL and stream key in the encoder; those connection settings specify where the encoder sends its output, not which file it plays.
- Verify the result at both ends. Check the server-side preview or output monitor, then confirm the live picture in YouTube. If the service does not document whether switching interrupts output, test the change on a non-critical stream before relying on it for a public broadcast.
Whether a particular system can swap media without interruption, how it transitions between items, and whether it needs a restart are provider-specific details. Without the name of the remote playout software, there is no safe universal click path or command to give.

Do not confuse a YouTube playlist with an HLS media playlist
In addition to a user-facing YouTube playlist, “playlist” can refer to a technical file used by HLS ingestion. In that protocol, the encoder sends Media Playlists and media segments to YouTube; the playlist describes the order of stream segments. Google’s HLS ingestion guide says each Media Segment contains a brief portion of the stream lasting between one and four seconds. That technical playlist is not the YouTube Studio collection, nor is it necessarily the queue you edit in a playout application.
HLS requirements are protocol-specific, not instructions for replacing a queued video in any remote service. YouTube’s guide specifies muxed M2TS audio/video, H.264 or HEVC video, AAC audio, up to 60 fps, HTTPS, a single encoded stream, and Media Playlists rather than Master Playlists. If your workflow uses HLS, follow the current protocol documentation and the encoder vendor’s implementation guidance.

Keep the stream key private
The stream key is part of the encoder’s connection to YouTube. Treat it as a secret: do not include it in screenshots, public support posts, or shared instructions. The standard encoder setup uses it to connect the encoder, and Google’s HLS guide describes it as identifying the creator and stream. If you suspect it has been exposed, review YouTube Studio’s live-stream settings and replace or reset the key using YouTube’s current controls; update the encoder with the new key before relying on it.
Questions to check with your remote playout provider
- Can the current item be replaced while the outgoing stream remains connected, or can only the next item be changed?
- Does the service apply queue edits immediately, at the next transition, or after a reload?
- What transition does it use, and can the change produce a pause, black frame, or interruption?
- Does changing the media require restarting the playout process or reconnecting the encoder?
- Can you monitor the remote output, and can you test a change without interrupting the public stream?
YouTube’s documentation establishes the separation between its destination and the external encoder, but does not answer these product-specific questions. A hardware encoder is not universally required: YouTube describes software and hardware encoder options, so the right procedure depends on what your server-side setup actually uses.

Troubleshooting a video that does not change
- The YouTube Studio playlist changed, but the live picture did not: You likely edited the viewer-facing YouTube collection, not the remote playout queue. Change the media in the system feeding the encoder.
- The queue changed, but the old video is still playing: Check whether the service applies changes only at the next item or requires a playlist reload. Confirm its behavior in the provider’s documentation or with support.
- The stream went offline during the switch: The playout or encoder may have restarted or disconnected. Check its logs and status, restore the configured YouTube destination and key if needed, and confirm the stream is receiving output before making another change.
- The remote system is sending the wrong content: Verify which source or schedule is actually assigned to the encoder output. Editing a separate saved playlist will not help if the live output uses another source.
- You use HLS and the change fails validation: Check the current YouTube HLS requirements for playlist type, media format, segment sequencing, and endpoint behavior; these protocol rules are distinct from ordinary playout queue controls.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep prerecorded videos playing on YouTube without maintaining a remote server or computer, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It keeps the stream running with your computer off, supports uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card required. Monthly: $9.99 per month. Start your free day with StreamNeo.
