You can replace an entry in a YouTube playlist by adding the new video, removing the old one, and putting the replacement in the right position. But if “24/7 playlist” means a continuous live broadcast assembled by an encoder or cloud service, editing a YouTube playlist may not change the feed already on air: update the queue in the system that supplies that broadcast.
You also cannot upload a new file under an existing YouTube video URL. A replacement upload gets a new URL, though you can modify the existing video or direct viewers to the updated version with a card. YouTube Help explains the available options.
First identify what is playing continuously
A YouTube playlist is a collection of videos viewers can play in sequence. A live stream is a separate broadcast feed, commonly supplied through an encoder or mobile streaming setup. YouTube documents playlist membership and live-stream settings separately; it does not say that changing playlist membership updates a running encoder’s media queue. This distinction follows from the separate documented workflows, and does not establish how every encoder or streaming service behaves.
- If viewers are playing a normal YouTube playlist: change the playlist entries in YouTube.
- If viewers are watching a continuous live broadcast: find out which encoder or streaming system supplies the feed, then change the media queue there. Do not assume a YouTube playlist edit changes what is already being broadcast.
Replace an entry in a YouTube playlist
For a one-off change, use YouTube Studio and YouTube’s playlist controls. Adding the new item and removing the old one are separate actions; YouTube does not promise an atomic swap, immediate updates for every person already watching, or uninterrupted playback during the edit.

- Sign in to YouTube Studio and open Content → Playlists.
- Open the target playlist on YouTube.
- Add the replacement video using search, a URL, or your library.
- On the old playlist entry, open its menu and choose Remove from .
- Drag the entries into the order you want.
These controls change playlist membership and order; they do not replace the uploaded video itself. See YouTube’s playlist instructions and playlist editing help.
Automate repeated changes with the YouTube Data API
For a scripted workflow, YouTube Data API v3 treats a playlist entry and the video it references as distinct resources. A playlist-item ID identifies the entry in the playlist; it is not the video ID.

- Authorize the application with OAuth 2.0 for the required write operations.
- List the playlist’s items and identify the old entry’s playlist-item ID and the replacement video’s video ID.
- Call
playlistItems.insertto add the replacement video to the playlist. - Call
playlistItems.deletewith the old playlist-item ID to remove the previous entry. - If necessary, call
playlistItems.updateto set the entry’s position.
Because insertion and deletion are separate API operations, this is not a single atomic replacement. Confirm the resulting playlist order after the calls. See the playlistItems API reference and playlist implementation guide.
If you mean a video already uploaded to YouTube
You cannot replace the video file in place while keeping its URL. YouTube states: “You can’t replace a video. Any new video you upload to YouTube will get a new URL.” To update the content, upload a new video and share its new URL; if appropriate, modify the existing upload or add a card pointing viewers to the updated version. YouTube Help: Replace or delete your video.

If the 24/7 feed is a live broadcast
Before changing anything, identify what is generating the broadcast. YouTube’s live-stream help covers encoder and mobile stream settings, including stream keys, but does not describe how a third-party encoder chooses or updates queued media. A YouTube playlist edit changes playlist membership; the live system may have a separate queue. Check that system’s controls and documentation before changing the on-air sequence.
