To replace a video without ending a 24/7 YouTube stream, keep OBS connected to the same YouTube live event and switch the program output to a prepared replacement source or scene. Do not click Stop Streaming in OBS or End Stream in YouTube Live Control Room. Test the replacement file and audio before changing the public feed.
Why you can change the video without ending the stream
YouTube receives the feed sent by your encoder. In an OBS workflow, OBS remains connected while you change what it sends by switching scenes or media sources. Replacing the program content and ending the live event are separate actions. YouTube’s encoder instructions say that ending a stream involves stopping content transmission from the encoder or ending it in Live Control Room: YouTube’s instructions for streaming with an encoder.
This workflow assumes OBS is producing the stream. The exact changeover may differ with another encoder, and neither YouTube nor OBS documentation guarantees that every file or setup will switch without a brief interruption. Test with the same files and configuration before relying on it for a public 24/7 feed.
Prepare the replacement in OBS before switching
- Add the replacement video. In OBS, add a Media Source to the current scene or create a separate scene for the replacement. Check that the file plays and that its video and audio are correct. OBS documents media-source formats and playback options in its Media Sources guide.
- Set playback behavior. Decide whether the file should loop, restart when the source becomes visible, or continue playing while hidden. If you use a VLC Video source for a playlist, VLC must be installed; OBS provides separate loop and shuffle options for that source. Verify the playlist order and playback behavior in a test. See the OBS Media Sources guide.
- Check framing and sound. Confirm the source fits the canvas as intended and that its audio is neither missing nor unexpectedly loud. If you use an existing scene, make sure the replacement source is visible and layered as intended.
- Choose how to make the change. For a planned replacement, putting each video in its own scene makes it easier to inspect the next scene and select a cut or fade. A single media source can also be restarted or advanced with OBS’s media controls. If you configure a source to close its file while inactive, OBS notes it may take a short time to reload when shown.
Switch the live output without stopping OBS
- Open Studio Mode if you want to preview the change. In OBS, enable Studio Mode. Prepare the replacement scene in the preview/edit area, check the picture and sound, and choose the transition you want. OBS says viewers cannot see Studio Mode itself; they see the program output after you transition. See the OBS overview guide.
- Send the replacement to program output. Use the selected transition to make the prepared scene live. If you are not using Studio Mode, switch to the prepared scene or change the active media source directly.
- Leave the connection controls alone. Keep OBS streaming to the existing YouTube live event. Do not press Stop Streaming in OBS or End Stream in Live Control Room while replacing the video.
- Check the result. Watch the YouTube preview and live watch page, and listen for audio continuity. YouTube advises monitoring audio and video quality during a stream. If the replacement appears black, silent, or out of frame, switch back to the known-good scene while you troubleshoot.
Choose between separate scenes and a VLC playlist

Neither setup is universally best. Use separate scenes when previewing each change is important; use a playlist when the desired behavior is sequential playback. OBS documents both approaches in its Media Sources guide and overview guide.

Protect the stream key and plan for the archive
Keep the stream key private
A source replacement does not require changing or publishing your YouTube stream key. YouTube describes the key as the credential/address the encoder uses to send a feed for YouTube to accept. Treat it like a password and do not share it publicly. See YouTube’s encoder instructions.
Do not rely on YouTube to archive a 24/7 stream in full
YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, while a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. Because a continuous 24/7 stream exceeds that threshold, keep a local recording if preserving the feed matters; do not assume YouTube will provide a complete archive. The 12-hour figure is the threshold stated by YouTube Help; the page does not state a publication year.

Troubleshoot a failed or rough changeover
- The replacement is black or missing: Confirm the scene or source is visible, the correct file is selected, and the media has loaded. If it was configured to close while inactive, allow time for it to reload or switch back while checking the source settings.
- The video appears but has no sound: Check that the clip has an audio track and that its source audio is enabled and reaching OBS’s output. Monitor the YouTube preview and watch page after adjusting it.
- The wrong clip plays in a playlist: Verify the VLC playlist order and whether loop or shuffle is enabled. Test the sequence before returning it to the live feed.
- The replacement is badly framed: Adjust the source’s fit and position in OBS, then inspect it in preview before transitioning again.
- The stream itself ended: A source switch should not require ending the event. Check whether OBS stopped sending or someone used End Stream in Live Control Room. Reconnecting or restarting a stream is a separate recovery procedure; do not assume the original event remains live.
- You see a brief gap or dropped frames: The documented workflow does not guarantee a seamless change for every computer, file, codec, or encoder setup. Test the exact production configuration and keep a known-good scene ready for fallback.
