You can keep YouTube Live connected while changing what OBS plays, but OBS does not document live edits to an active VLC playlist as a reliable, interruption-free replacement method. The cautious option is to prepare a second scene with its own playlist, update that inactive playlist, then switch scenes without pressing Stop Streaming. This is a community-suggested workaround, not a guarantee, so rehearse it and monitor YouTube Live Control Room before relying on it.

Use VLC Video Source for an OBS playlist

OBS’s Media Sources documentation says VLC Video Source supports playlists, unlike the regular Media Source. VLC must be installed; if you use 64-bit OBS, OBS specifies installing 64-bit VLC as well. The documentation describes playlist controls, but it does not establish that editing a playlist already in playback will reliably reload the replacement without a visible or audible change.

For a live update, the key distinction is between the media being played and OBS’s stream connection. YouTube explains that the encoder’s stream key identifies where to send the feed and enables YouTube to accept it (Manage live stream settings). Keep OBS streaming while you change scenes or sources; do not press Stop Streaming as part of the update.

Prepare a second scene before going live

A community suggestion is to maintain two equivalent scenes, each with a VLC Video Source pointing to a separate playlist file. Update the playlist in the scene that is not currently on program, then switch to that scene when it is ready. The suggestion itself cautions that it may not reload as expected. Treat it as a workflow to test, not as an OBS-supported guarantee.

When using an adapter, if the device is recognized as USB 2.0, try using the other side with the USB-C port. Simply flip the capture card and reconnect it to be recognized as USB 3.0
  1. Install VLC and match OBS architecture. Use the OBS documentation’s VLC Video Source requirements; 64-bit OBS calls for 64-bit VLC.
  2. Create the first scene and playlist. In OBS, add a VLC Video Source and load a playlist file. Configure the source’s playlist options for your intended playback; OBS documents Loop Playlist as on by default and Shuffle Playlist as off by default.
  3. Make an alternate scene with its own playlist file. Build an equivalent scene and source, but point it to a different playlist file. Leave this scene off program output while the first scene is live.
  4. Rehearse the update while not on an important broadcast. Add, remove, or replace an item in the inactive playlist, then switch scenes. Check that the expected video and audio appear, that playback starts at an acceptable point, and that YouTube Live Control Room still shows a healthy live stream.
  5. Plan the transition. If a brief gap would be a problem, prepare a holding scene or another deliberate transition. Ensure it does not hide or stop the only source you need to keep playing.

Replace the video during the broadcast

  1. Keep OBS’s streaming output active and verify that the current program is still reaching YouTube.
  2. Update the playlist file belonging to the inactive scene, rather than changing the playlist currently playing. Save the file.
  3. Switch to the prepared scene in OBS. Watch the program preview and listen for the expected video and audio.
  4. Check YouTube Live Control Room for continued stream status and any reported health issue. A scene change can alter the program content; the available YouTube guidance does not promise that every playlist edit or transition will be invisible to viewers.

If this method fails, do not assume the playlist will recover on its own. The OBS forum thread describes inconsistent results: one user reported that resaving an edited active playlist sometimes appeared to update playback, while at other times a restart of OBS and YouTube was needed. That is an individual report, not a general behavior specification. A separate 2020 forum question also describes playback returning to the first video after playlist changes; it does not establish how the encoder connection behaves in general.

Understand visibility and playback behavior

Changing a scene can affect whether a VLC source keeps playing when it is not visible. OBS documents the VLC Video Source Visibility Behaviour setting as controlling playback while the source is hidden; the default is Stop when not visible, restart when visible. If you expect a hidden source to continue playing or to resume at a particular point, inspect this setting and test its behavior in your own scene layout. Do not assume that hiding a scene is equivalent to leaving its media untouched.

Active playlist edit or alternate scene?

Approach What is established Practical risk Best use
Edit the active playlist OBS documents playlist playback, but does not document reliable live reload of an edited playlist. A forum user reported mixed reload results; playback may not update as expected. Only when you can tolerate a failed update and have rehearsed recovery.
Update an inactive scene’s playlist, then switch Suggested in an OBS forum discussion; the poster said it was uncertain. Reload and transition behavior still needs testing, including whether playback restarts. When you want the replacement prepared before putting it on program.

The comparison reflects OBS documentation and community reports, not a controlled test. If uninterrupted program output is essential, test the complete scene change—including audio, playback position, visibility settings, and YouTube status—before the public broadcast.

Troubleshooting a failed replacement

  • The playlist does not show the new item: Confirm you edited the playlist file assigned to the intended VLC Video Source, saved it, and switched to the scene that uses it. The active-playlist reload behavior is not guaranteed by OBS documentation.
  • The video starts over: OBS forum users have reported playback resetting after playlist changes. Check the behavior in rehearsal and decide whether restarting the replacement from its beginning is acceptable.
  • The source stops when you switch away: Check Visibility Behaviour. OBS’s documented default stops playback when the source is not visible and restarts it when visible.
  • You see video but lose audio, or the wrong clip appears: Verify the alternate scene’s source, playlist order, and audio in OBS preview before switching. These checks are operational precautions; the documented playlist support does not guarantee a seamless live replacement.
  • YouTube Live Control Room no longer shows a healthy stream: Check OBS’s streaming status and the stream destination/key configuration. YouTube describes the stream key as the encoder’s destination/acceptance credential; a playlist change should not be treated as proof that the encoder connection remains healthy.
