To replace a leaking push-to-connect fitting, shut off the water, relieve pressure, release the old fitting with the manufacturer’s disconnect clip or tongs, cut back to undamaged pipe, prepare a square and deburred end, install a correctly matched replacement to its marked insertion depth, and pressure-test the joint before concealing it.
Most leaks are caused by preparation or insertion errors rather than by the push-fit concept itself. A non-square cut, an un-deburred edge, incomplete insertion, scratches, dents, or debris can stop the internal O-ring from sealing. The procedure below applies the documented SharkBite method, but the exact fitting instructions and local plumbing code take priority for every brand, pipe material, and application.
What a push-to-connect fitting does
A push-to-connect fitting seals when a prepared tube is pushed through an internal gripping ring and O-ring until it reaches the tube stop. The fitting’s release collar allows the tube to be removed when it is depressed with the correct disconnect tool. Because the seal depends on the outside surface of the tube, the pipe end must be clean, smooth, round, square, and inserted far enough.

These fittings are sold in several geometries, including straight couplings, elbows, tees, adapters, and valves. A replacement must match the nominal tube size, the materials approved for that fitting, and the connection geometry. A fitting that physically accepts a tube is not automatically approved for that material, temperature, pressure, or plumbing use.

When replacement is appropriate
Replace the fitting when its body is cracked, its sealing area is damaged, it continues to leak after the pipe has been correctly prepared and fully inserted, or the fitting is not approved for the installation. If the leak is at the tube entry, first determine whether the tube is short of the stop, cut crooked, scratched, dirty, or incompletely deburred. Correcting the tube end may solve the problem without replacing an otherwise sound fitting, but the removed fitting must still be inspected and reused only when its manufacturer permits it.
A 2024 SharkBite guide warns that repeatedly reused fittings should not be used as permanent installations. Treat a fitting that has been disconnected multiple times as a replacement candidate rather than assuming it will provide a long-term seal.

Before you start: safety, access and code
- Confirm that the connection carries water, not gas or another hazardous fluid. Do not use this procedure for a gas line.
- Shut off the nearest service valve or the main supply, then open a nearby faucet to release pressure. Drain the accessible section before loosening anything.
- Check local plumbing-code requirements for the location, pipe material, fitting type, support, and whether a concealed connection is allowed.
- Plan how you will inspect and pressure-test the joint. Do not close a wall, ceiling, cabinet back, or appliance enclosure until the connection has passed inspection.
- Use a licensed plumber for concealed work that cannot be observed or tested, high-pressure systems, difficult main-line work, or any situation in which the water cannot be isolated safely.
Step-by-step replacement procedure
1. Shut off water and relieve pressure
- Close the fixture shutoff serving the leaking fitting. If that valve does not isolate the section, close the home’s main water shutoff.
- Open the nearest cold-water faucet, then open a lower faucet or drain point if one is available. Wait until flow stops.
- Place a container under the fitting and remove insulation or an access panel only as far as needed to work safely.
Residual water can remain trapped between valves, so expect some drainage when the tube is released. Never try to pull a pressurized tube from a push-fit connector.
2. Identify the connection and replacement requirements
Read the markings on the fitting and measure the nominal tube size. Identify every tube entering the fitting and whether each is copper, CPVC, PEX, or another material explicitly approved by the manufacturer. Note the fitting geometry and flow direction if it is a valve or directional component.

Do not substitute a fitting solely because its opening appears to match. A replacement must be approved for the exact tube material and service. If the fitting joins two different materials, verify that the replacement is specifically documented for that transition.
3. Release the old fitting with the correct tool
- Expose the release collar around the tube. Wipe away standing water and dirt so the tool can seat evenly.
- For a disconnect clip, snap the clip around the tube with its flat face against the release collar.
- Press the clip toward the fitting to depress the collar. Keep that pressure applied while pulling the tube straight out.
- For disconnect tongs, place the tong jaws around the tube and collar, squeeze to depress the collar, and pull the tube with a slight twisting motion.
SharkBite states that a disconnect clip or disconnect tongs are required for removal. Do not pry against the fitting body with a screwdriver or pull without depressing the collar; those actions can damage the fitting or tube.
4. Inspect the removed fitting and exposed tube
Examine the tube’s outside diameter under good light. Look for longitudinal scratches, dents, flattened areas, burrs, gouges, scale, paint, or dirt. Any mark that crosses the O-ring’s sealing path is a reason to cut back to clean tube or use new tube. A smooth-looking end can still be out of round after being crushed by an unsuitable tool.
Inspect the fitting for cracks, deformation, contamination, or damage around the collar and sealing area. Follow the fitting manufacturer’s instructions on whether it may be reused. Reuse is not a default: the 2024 guide specifically cautions against using repeatedly reused fittings as permanent installations.

5. Cut back to sound tube
- Mark a section beyond every scratch, dent, or damaged area, leaving enough straight tube for the new fitting and for future service.
- Use a tube cutter that is appropriate for the material. Rotate it gradually so the tube remains round rather than being crushed.
- Make the cut perpendicular to the tube. A slanted end can leave part of the O-ring unsupported and create a leak path.
If there is not enough sound tube to make a square cut and achieve the required insertion depth, do not force the repair. Extend the accessible section, replace a longer segment, or have a plumber redesign the connection.
6. Deburr and clean the tube
Remove the sharp edge and any internal or external burrs with the manufacturer-approved deburring tool. Wipe away filings, dirt, and moisture. Do not leave a raised edge that can cut the O-ring, and do not apply an unapproved sealant, tape, oil, or adhesive to the tube or fitting.
Incomplete deburring, debris, and scratches are among the leak causes listed in SharkBite’s current FAQ. The sealing surface must be smooth around the entire circumference.

7. Mark the insertion depth
Use the fitting’s depth gauge, a deburr-and-gauge tool, or the dimension in the installation instructions. Make a clear mark around the tube so you can verify insertion after assembly. The 2022 SharkBite guide specifies that the depth mark should be within 0.005 inch (0.13 mm) of the release-collar end after the tube is inserted.

That tolerance applies to the cited SharkBite guide, not automatically to every push-fit brand. If the replacement fitting supplies a different depth dimension or gauge, use that value instead.
8. Push the replacement fitting fully home
- Align the tube with the fitting opening so it enters straight.
- Push firmly while using a slight twisting action. Continue until the tube reaches the internal tube stop.
- Pull back gently on the fitting and tube to confirm the grip has engaged. Do not use this light check as a substitute for the depth mark.
- Inspect the mark at the release collar. If it is short of the specified position, depress the collar, remove the tube, prepare the end again if necessary, and reinsert it.
For a coupling, repeat the preparation and insertion checks on the other side. For an elbow, tee, valve, or transition fitting, support the connected tube so its weight does not pull sideways on the new seal.
9. Restore water slowly and pressure-test
- Make sure every release collar is in its normal position and that the fitting is supported.
- Close the open faucets except for a controlled bleed point if your system requires one.
- Open the shutoff valve gradually. A slow fill reduces the shock that can move an improperly supported connection.
- Dry the fitting completely, then inspect the collar, tube entry, and body with a light. Feel for new moisture without placing your hand near an electrical component.
- Operate the fixture or valve through its normal range and inspect again. Keep the area accessible for the pressure test required by the 2024 guide.
If any moisture appears, shut the water off, release pressure, and disassemble the joint. Do not tighten a push-to-connect fitting with a wrench or smear sealant around the outside; correct the tube preparation, insertion, compatibility, or damaged component instead.

SharkBite’s FAQ summarizes four specific leak causes: improper deburring, incomplete insertion, a non-square cut, and scratches or debris that prevent the O-ring from making a watertight seal. Those causes explain why replacing a fitting without correcting the tube end often fails.

Choosing a replacement fitting

Disconnect clip versus disconnect tongs

Use the tool specified by the manufacturer and sized for the fitting. Neither tool repairs a damaged tube surface; removal is only the first part of the job.
Can you reuse a push-to-connect fitting?
Sometimes a manufacturer permits a fitting to be disconnected and reinstalled, but permission is product-specific. Inspect the fitting every time, follow its instructions, and do not reuse it if the body, collar, gripping ring, or sealing area is damaged or contaminated. The 2024 SharkBite guide says repeatedly reused fittings should not be used as permanent installations. For a concealed or safety-critical connection, a new approved fitting is the conservative choice.
The pipe itself may be reusable only when the exposed sealing surface remains smooth and undamaged. If the old fitting left scratches, dents, or burrs, cut back to clean tube before installing anything.
When the repair should not be a do-it-yourself job
- The line carries gas, fuel, refrigerant, or a hazardous fluid.
- You cannot shut off and depressurize the section completely.
- The connection is inside a wall, ceiling, slab, or other inaccessible location where inspection and pressure testing are impossible.
- The pipe is part of a high-pressure, commercial, fire-protection, or regulated system.
- There is insufficient sound tube to achieve the required insertion depth without redesigning the run.
- The leak has caused structural damage, mold, or electrical risk.
- Local code requires a licensed plumber or a different joining method.
Warranty and documentation
SharkBite states that its fittings and PEX have a 25-year warranty when installed according to the instructions and local code. That is a manufacturer warranty condition, not a guarantee that every installation will last 25 years. Keep the fitting packaging, model information, installation date, and any pressure-test record, and verify the current warranty terms for the exact product.
