On Windows, repair Office from the installed product’s Modify menu: choose Quick Repair or Online Repair for Click-to-Run, or Repair for an MSI-based installation. On Mac, Microsoft’s documented route is to uninstall and reinstall Office; there is no equivalent Windows repair dialog in the reviewed Mac instructions.
Repair Office on Windows
Close all Office apps first. If you have not already tried it, restart Windows; Microsoft notes that a restart can sometimes resolve an Office app problem. The repair process applies to the whole Office suite even when only one app is malfunctioning. Microsoft describes it this way: “This will repair the entire Office suite even if it’s just one application you want to repair such as Word or Excel.”
- Open the installed-app list. In Windows 11, right-click Start and select Installed apps. In Windows 10, open Apps & Features.
- Find your Microsoft 365 or Office product and select Modify. If you have a standalone Office application, search for that app by name.
- Choose the repair option matching the installation type shown, as described below.
- Follow the on-screen prompts. Restart the computer if Windows requests it, or if the issue remains after repair.
Choose the right Windows repair option
The available choices depend on whether Office was installed using Click-to-Run or Windows Installer (MSI). If you are unsure, select Modify and use the installation type and options presented in the window.

If Windows repair does not fix the problem
Uninstall and reinstall Office using Microsoft’s instructions for your version. To install it again, sign in with the account associated with your Office or Microsoft 365 license and use Microsoft’s download and reinstall flow.
Do not assume the Windows uninstall troubleshooter supports every Office release. Microsoft’s reviewed troubleshooting guidance says its availability is version-limited and that the troubleshooter currently cannot uninstall Office 2024. Check the guidance for your specific release before relying on it.

Repair or reinstall Office on Mac
The reviewed Microsoft instructions for Mac document uninstalling and reinstalling Office rather than using Windows’ Quick Repair or Online Repair controls. Microsoft’s removal process uses Finder and can include deleting files from your user Library.
- Follow Microsoft’s uninstall instructions for Office for Mac, which begin in Finder > Applications.
- Before removing Outlook-related folders from the Library, back them up. Microsoft warns that moving the listed folders to Bin removes Outlook data. Some cleanup folders may not exist on every Mac.
- Restart your Mac after the uninstall and cleanup steps.
- Go to Microsoft’s download and reinstall page, sign in with the account linked to the license, download the Mac installer package, and follow its prompts.
If the Mac problem is licensing-related
If the issue appears to concern activation or licensing rather than damaged installation files, Microsoft provides a license-removal tool for Mac. Microsoft says the tool removes all Microsoft 365 for Mac licenses. Before using it, make sure you know the account and password for the license you want to use.
