To remove your information from people-search sites, find each site’s listing for you, submit its opt-out request, and check again periodically. Most removals are site-specific: a request may not remove information from public records, other businesses, or every report, and listings can reappear. California residents can also send one request through the state’s DROP platform to more than 600 registered data brokers.
What people-search sites collect—and what an opt-out changes
People-search sites compile profiles from sources such as other data brokers, public social-media information, and federal, state, and local public records. A report may connect a name, phone number, or address with relatives and other personal details. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) explains how these sites gather information and how consumers can request removal in its people-search opt-out guidance.
An opt-out asks a site or broker to stop displaying or handling information covered by its process. It does not erase the underlying public record or automatically remove the same information from every source or site. A report may also remain under a relative’s or associate’s profile. The FTC notes that information can reappear, for example, when public-record information changes.
How to opt out of people-search sites
-
Find and verify your listings
Start with people-search sites you already know. Search for your name; if needed, try a phone number or address. Inspect the result carefully before requesting removal so you do not select someone with a similar name. One site can have more than one entry for the same person, so check for additional listings.

-
Use each site’s removal process
Look for the site’s opt-out or privacy-rights instructions and follow its verification steps. If the instructions are difficult to locate, the FTC suggests searching online for the site’s name along with “opt out” or “remove my information.” Forms, verification requirements, and processing times vary by site and can change. Some sites may ask for identifying information to verify a request.
-
Keep a private record and check again
Record which sites you contacted and when. Search again periodically, including for new entries, and submit another opt-out if information returns or a new listing appears. Reappearance is possible, so a past request is not a guarantee of permanent removal.

Review the information requested, then submit
DROP sends the information you enter to brokers so they can process the request. CalPrivacy’s DROP Terms of Use say that providing more personal information increases the likelihood that brokers will find and delete information they maintain. Review the current terms and provide only information you are comfortable sharing and that the platform requests; identifiers can help a broker match your request to its records.
-
Allow time for processing and check the results
As of October 4, 2026, CalPrivacy says brokers must access and process requests at least once every 45 days, and status updates may take up to 90 days. These are separate points in the process: the processing cadence is not a promise that every request will be completed in 45 days. Timing varies by broker. Return to DROP to review results and update your profile if your name, contact details, or other identifiers change. See the state’s DROP process and status information.

What DROP’s status labels mean
CalPrivacy uses these statuses to describe what a broker reported:
- Deleted: The broker matched you and deleted non-exempt information.
- Exempted: The broker may retain information covered by an exemption.
- Opted-out: The broker did not make an exact match, but may no longer sell or share the data.
- Record not found: The broker has no information about you or could not locate it using the details provided. CalPrivacy says you can add information to improve matching.
- Pending: The broker has not processed the request.
These labels do not all mean that information was deleted. A status should be read as the broker’s reported outcome for the request, not as proof that every copy of your information has been removed.

Know what opt-outs do not cover
Neither a site-by-site opt-out nor DROP should be treated as erasing every source of your information. DROP does not require deletion of first-party information you gave directly to a business, exempted information, or publicly available data. For those categories, a different request or process may apply.
For information you gave directly to a California business, CalPrivacy advises checking its privacy policy and links such as “Do not sell or share my personal information” or “Your CA Privacy Choices.” Use the listed web form, email, or toll-free number. California says a business may need to verify your identity and should generally respond within 45 days; that guidance is specific to California direct-business requests, not a universal deadline for every people-search site. If a business appears not to follow California privacy law or ignores a request, CalPrivacy says consumers can file a complaint. See CalPrivacy’s consumer privacy guidance.
Removing an online broker listing also does not remove a government-held record. A public record may require a separate process with the government body that maintains it.
Should you use a paid removal service?
The FTC says paid services can submit opt-out requests, but you can also do the work yourself for free. If you compare services, ask:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- How many sites does the service cover?
- Does it report which sites received requests or completed removals?
- How often does it look for new or reappearing listings?
These are useful comparison questions, not guarantees of coverage or lasting removal. A service’s results depend on the sites it covers and the information those sites hold.
