Use MKVToolNix GUI to deselect subtitle tracks, or run mkvmerge -o output.mkv --no-subtitles input.mkv to omit every subtitle track. This works for soft subtitles stored in the container; it cannot remove text burned into the video image.
First check what kind of subtitles the video has
MKV files can contain soft subtitles as separate tracks alongside video and audio. Those tracks can be excluded when creating a new MKV. Burned-in, or hardcoded, subtitles are part of the video frames themselves; removing an MKV track will not erase them.
The steps below apply to embedded tracks. They use MKVToolNix to select which existing streams are included in a new Matroska file, rather than editing subtitle text or altering the video image. The mkvmerge manual documents the track-selection options.
Remove subtitle tracks with MKVToolNix GUI
- Open the MKVToolNix GUI and add or open the MKV file.
- Inspect the track list and deselect each subtitle track you want removed. Deselect all subtitle entries to remove every embedded subtitle track; leave selected any you want to keep.
- Choose a separate output filename and start muxing.
- Open the output file and check its track list and playback. Keep the original until you have confirmed the result.

Remove all subtitle tracks from the command line
With mkvmerge installed, run:
mkvmerge -o output.mkv --no-subtitles input.mkv
Replace input.mkv with the source filename and output.mkv with the destination filename. In this single-input example, --no-subtitles applies to the input that follows it. The manual defines the option as: “Don’t copy any subtitle track from this file.”
This creates a new MKV without subtitle tracks from that input. It does not change the original file. Check the output before deleting or replacing the source, and consult the manual for the MKVToolNix version installed on your system if its behavior or options differ.

Keep some subtitle tracks and remove others
Use --subtitle-tracks when the output should retain only chosen subtitle tracks. First identify the source’s track IDs, then pass the IDs you want to keep to the selector. The manual also documents an optional ! exclusion form. Track IDs are not necessarily the same as row numbers shown in the GUI, so do not guess them.
See the mkvmerge manual for selector syntax and the project’s documentation for identification options. For an unfamiliar file, the GUI track list may be easier to inspect; a command is useful when you want to repeat a known selection.

Why track removal creates a new file
Removing a track requires rewriting the MKV, a process called remuxing. MKVToolNix developer Moritz Bunkus explained in a forum reply dated December 22, 2023, that tracks are interleaved by timestamps, so removing one requires rewriting the file; mkvmerge performs that job. Read the developer’s explanation.
Remuxing selects streams for a new container; it is not the same as re-encoding the video. For ordinary removal of embedded subtitle tracks, the documented workflow is to remux without those tracks, not to re-encode the picture.
