Remove the iPhone from its case first, then clean according to the case material. For silicone, clear, polycarbonate, and TPU cases, use a soft, slightly damp, lint-free cloth. FineWoven and TechWoven need a diluted detergent wash, while leather requires extra caution because cleaning can change its color. Apple’s instructions do not promise to reverse yellowing or set-in dye transfer.
Before you clean the case
- Remove the iPhone. Do not clean the case while it is on the phone; Apple’s case-cleaning guidance begins by removing the device.
- Identify the case material. The cleaning method differs for common plastic and silicone cases, FineWoven or TechWoven, and leather.
- Use a clean, soft, lint-free cloth. A microfiber cloth can be useful for gentle wiping, but it is not a guaranteed stain remover.
Apple’s instructions below apply to cases, not the iPhone itself. See Apple’s case-cleaning guidance for the material-specific procedures.
Choose the method for your case material

Silicone, clear, polycarbonate, and TPU
With the phone removed, wipe both the inside and outside of the case using a soft cloth that is only slightly damp. Apple warns against window cleaners, household cleaners, aerosol sprays, solvents, ammonia, abrasives, and cleaners containing hydrogen peroxide. Do not substitute a stronger cleaner in an attempt to lift a stubborn mark.
FineWoven and TechWoven
- Remove the iPhone from the case.
- In a clean container, mix 1 teaspoon (5 mL) of liquid laundry detergent with 1 cup (250 mL) of water.
- Dip a lint-free cloth into the mixture and wring it slightly. Gently rub the case surfaces for one minute.
- Wipe the surfaces with a separate cloth slightly dampened with fresh water.
- Dry with a soft, dry, lint-free cloth.
Apple notes that the fibers can compress during ordinary use and change the fabric’s appearance; some scratches may diminish over time. That is not a guarantee that a stain will disappear.

Leather
Cleaning may alter leather’s color. If you decide to proceed, remove the case and gently wipe it with a clean cloth using warm water and mild hand soap. Avoid leather cleaners and conditioners if preserving the existing color is your priority, since Apple says they can change it. Apple identifies water, oil, makeup, and dyed materials such as denim as possible causes of stains on tanned leather.
What if the stain remains?
Do not escalate to solvents, abrasives, peroxide, or an unapproved cleaner on the assumption that stronger treatment is safer or more effective. Apple’s published procedures do not establish a way to reverse yellowing or remove set-in dye transfer, and they do not guarantee results for third-party cases. If a mark persists, stop rather than risk damaging the finish; consult the case maker for material-specific instructions.
