Reverse osmosis (RO) is a common desalination route, but RO permeate is not automatically suitable for every electrolyzer. A sediment filter or a low total-dissolved-solids (TDS) reading alone cannot establish that it is.
Why raw seawater needs treatment
Seawater contains dissolved salts, including chloride, as well as suspended particles and other substances that can affect treatment equipment. In electrolysis, chloride chemistry can produce chlorine-related products. Direct seawater electrolysis also faces corrosion, metal-precipitation, selectivity, and durability challenges. Reviews therefore distinguish emerging direct-seawater research from the practical indirect route: desalinate the water first, then feed the treated product water to conventional equipment. Nature Reviews Materials’ 2025 review and an ACS Materials Letters perspective from 2024 discuss these issues and mitigation research.
Use a treatment train, not a single filter
The stages do different jobs: pretreatment reduces material that can foul or scale desalination equipment; desalination removes most dissolved salts; and post-treatment or polishing brings product water toward the electrolyzer’s requirements. The exact equipment depends on the seawater source, system scale, and electrolyzer.
- Characterize and pretreat the intake. Source water varies in particulate, colloidal, inorganic, organic, and biological matter. Depending on its quality and the system design, pretreatment may include coagulation and granular-media filtration, or low-pressure membranes such as microfiltration or ultrafiltration. These steps protect downstream equipment; they do not remove seawater’s dissolved salts. A 2024 critical review of RO fouling and scaling describes these feed-water concerns and pretreatment approaches. A small setup does not necessarily need a full industrial pretreatment plant, but its intake still needs a suitable solids-control strategy.
- Desalinate. RO uses membranes to separate much of the dissolved salt from water. Multiple-effect distillation and multi-stage flash are established thermal alternatives. The choice depends on factors such as scale, available energy, feed conditions, footprint, operating needs, and brine handling; there is no universally best method. - Polish if needed, then verify. Desalination product water may need additional purification before electrolysis. Follow the documentation for the specific electrolyzer and check the parameters it names using suitable tests or online monitoring. Do not assume RO alone meets the required specification.
How to tell whether treated water is suitable
Use the electrolyzer maker’s feed-water specification as the acceptance criterion, not a general idea of what counts as “clean” water. Requirements vary by technology and model. A 2023 review reports that PEM electrolyzer manufacturers commonly specify a minimum feed-water resistivity of 1 MΩ cm, but this is a literature observation, not a universal limit for every PEM unit or a substitute for the unit’s instructions. A digital TDS meter can help compare dissolved-solids readings before and after treatment. It does not remove contaminants, identify every impurity, or verify all the measurements an electrolyzer may require. Use the instrument and test methods appropriate to the manufacturer’s stated parameters; where those parameters require it, use laboratory or online testing.
One 2024 alkaline seawater-electrolysis study associated 95% of maximum hydrogen evolution in its tested setup with thresholds of 240 mg/L chlorine, 0.7 NTU turbidity, and 375 mg/L TDS. These are results from that particular study, not general feed-water limits or design targets for other electrolyzers. Read the study in the International Journal of Hydrogen Energy.

Standards and direct seawater research
ISO 23446:2021 addresses product water from seawater RO for municipal water supply, including water-quality parameters and monitoring relevant to pipeline compatibility. It is not an electrolyzer feed-water standard. The ISO page for ISO 23446:2021 records the standard as under systematic review as of 2026-07-15.
Direct seawater electrolysis is an active research area, with membranes and other approaches intended to mitigate chloride-related reactions and other problems. The remaining concerns around real-world durability and scale-up mean it should not be treated as interchangeable with feeding conventional equipment properly treated water.
