Wait until your water runs clear, then use a rust remover labeled or recommended for fabric and follow its directions. Avoid chlorine bleach: it can make rust-like discoloration worse.
What to do first
- Stop the wash. If the water looks yellow, orange, or brown, do not continue washing laundry in it. Remove affected clothes from the drying process and keep them wet. The Los Angeles Department of Water and Power advises: “Remove the laundry from the machine and keep it wet.” (LADWP water-quality FAQ)
- Do not heat-dry the items or use chlorine bleach. Heat-drying before treatment can set the stain. The American Cleaning Institute warns that sodium hypochlorite bleach “may intensify discoloration”; LADWP also warns that bleach can react with iron and form a permanent stain. (American Cleaning Institute stain-removal guide; LADWP water-quality FAQ)
- Wait for clear water. Follow your water utility’s local directions for clearing discolored water. Do not use a universal flushing time: procedures and advice vary by utility.
- Check the garment label and treat the stain. Use only a rust remover recommended for fabric or labeled for laundry. Follow its directions for application, rinsing, and rewashing; use ordinary detergent for the rewash if the product and garment instructions allow it.
Do not substitute a rust remover intended for tools, sinks, or other hard surfaces. If the stain remains, check the care label and the laundry product instructions again rather than adding an unverified household chemical. For delicate or non-washable garments, seek garment-care advice.
Choose a treatment that is safe for the garment
Fabric-labeled rust remover
A product specifically recommended for fabric or labeled for laundry is the targeted option. Check that the garment’s care instructions permit the method, and use the package directions rather than assuming all rust removers work the same way. The available guidance does not establish a removal rate or a typical number of washes required, so complete removal cannot be guaranteed.
Lemon juice and salt for a small stain
Michigan government laundry guidance describes repeatedly applying lemon juice and salt to a small stain, keeping the area wet between applications, and rinsing thoroughly. This is an alternative method described by that source, not a proven match for every fabric or stain. Check the garment care label first; the same guidance notes that a stain may be permanent. Why water after a flush can mark clothes
A change in water flow during a main break, hydrant use, or flushing can disturb iron-bearing deposits and temporarily discolor water. Iron or manganese in the supply, rusty pipes, or a water heater can also be associated with yellow, orange, or brown laundry marks. These are plausible explanations after a flush, but color alone does not identify the metal or prove where it came from. (American Cleaning Institute stain-removal guide; LADWP water-quality FAQ; Samsung laundry stain guidance)
If the discoloration comes back
Notice which fixtures are affected and whether the issue appears in cold water, hot water, or both. A sudden change across multiple fixtures—especially in cold water—fits a main disturbance pattern. Discoloration that returns after water has stood, is confined to one or a few fixtures, or appears only in hot water may point instead to household plumbing or a water heater. These patterns are clues, not a diagnosis; contact your utility about a possible supply issue or a qualified plumber about a household source. (LADWP water-quality FAQ; Canton water-quality guidance)

Follow your utility’s timing, not a general rule
Utilities give location-specific instructions, so follow the advice for your area. For example, Milwaukee Water Works says its household flushing guidance should clear water after 10 minutes and advises contacting its control center if discoloration remains after 30 minutes. Columbus, Ohio, says rusty-water events normally dissipate in 4–6 hours, may last longer depending on water use, and advises contacting its distribution group if an event continues beyond 24 hours. These are local instructions and expectations, not guarantees for other places. (Milwaukee Water Works guidance; City of Columbus water-quality guidance)
