To remove personal information from the web, work at each place it appears: remove it from the original page or account when possible, request eligible Google Search removals, and opt out of people-search sites that publish brokered profiles. These actions have different effects: a search result can disappear while its source page stays online, and broker opt-outs do not erase public records. For California residents, the state’s DROP tool offers an additional request route to registered data brokers.
Start by finding every place the information appears
Search for the exact details you want to limit, such as your name combined with a phone number or address. Record each matching page’s URL and what it displays. Keep the list private; it will help you track which organization controls each copy and whether a request worked.
A simple tracking list can include the source URL, site or page owner, information exposed, request date, confirmation or response, and a date to check again. Distinguish the original webpage from a Google result or a people-search profile: each requires a different request.
Remove the information at its source
Pages and accounts you control
Delete or edit the information in the account, profile, post, or page where you originally shared it. If the page belongs to a service you use, check its privacy settings and removal process. Removing the source is the most direct way to change what the live page contains.

Pages controlled by someone else
Contact the website owner or publisher and ask for the specific information to be removed or corrected. Use the site’s privacy or removal process if one is available. Google advises contacting the source owner when information remains on the live webpage; removing a Google result does not remove that page. See Google’s guidance on removing information from a website.
Request removal from Google Search
Google’s “Results about you” feature lets you check for eligible personal contact details or specified private identifiers in Search results and submit removal requests. Follow the current prompts, provide the exact result URL and the information displayed, then monitor the request’s status. Google reviews requests individually and can decline removal when it considers the result valuable to the public. Feature availability may vary by market, and Google’s policies can change.

An approved request affects the result in Google Search; it does not delete the source page. Google states: “When you remove a result that shows your personal info from Google Search, it doesn’t mean that the info is gone from the internet.” Review Google’s Results about you instructions and its policy for removing personal information from Search.
If the source page has since been removed or changed, request an update through Google’s outdated-content refresh process so Search can reflect the newer page. Google’s web-result removal guidance explains the distinction between source changes and search visibility.

Opt out of people-search sites and data brokers
People-search sites assemble profiles from sources that can include data brokers, public social profiles, and government public records. The FTC’s do-it-yourself approach is to find your profile on each site, locate its opt-out instructions, submit the request, and repeat on other sites. Search using the name, phone number, or address shown in the profile, then track each request separately. The FTC explains the process in its people-search site guidance.
Some sites may ask you to verify your identity. Provide only what is reasonably needed through the site’s actual opt-out procedure, and be cautious about sending additional sensitive documents or details that are not required.

What an opt-out does—and does not do
An opt-out generally asks a particular site to stop selling certain existing information about you. It does not delete the underlying government public records. Your details may also appear in a relative’s or associate’s profile, and a profile can return if a site receives changed or newly available public-record data. Recheck periodically and submit another request when a listing reappears.
Deciding whether to use a paid opt-out service
A paid service may submit requests across sites, but its coverage and follow-up practices matter. Before paying, compare the sites it says it covers, whether it reports completed requests, and how often it scans for new listings. Do not treat a service as a guarantee of complete or permanent removal: the FTC notes that public records remain and information can reappear.

California residents: consider the DROP request
California residents can use the state’s Delete Request and Opt-out Platform (DROP) to send a deletion request to more than 500 registered data brokers, according to a California Attorney General announcement dated February 18, 2026. The tool is specific to California residents and registered brokers; it is not a universal request to erase every website, public record, or search result. See the California Attorney General’s DROP announcement for its stated scope.
Keep checking after requests are submitted
Removal is not always permanent. Revisit the original URLs, Google results, and people-search profiles on a recurring schedule, and update your tracking list when a page changes or a new listing appears. If a broker profile returns, use that site’s opt-out process again; if the source page changed but Search still shows an old version, use Google’s outdated-content refresh process.
