Use a different tool for each kind of noise: Audacity’s profile-based Noise Reduction for steady hiss, a narrow notch filter for a stable hum or whistle, and Click Removal or Repair for brief clicks. Work on a copy, make conservative changes, and compare the result with the original; aggressive cleanup can damage speech and music.

Identify the noise before choosing a tool

Listen to quiet gaps as well as busy passages. Steady broadband hiss, a persistent tonal hum, and brief sharp clicks are different problems, and treating them all with one effect can remove wanted audio or leave the defect untouched.

  • Steady hiss: a continuous wash of noise, especially noticeable in pauses. Try profile-based Noise Reduction if you can find a representative section containing noise but no wanted speech or music.
  • Hum, buzz, or whistle: a stable tone or narrow band of interference. Try a notch filter rather than relying on broadband reduction alone.
  • Clicks: short, sharp spikes. Use Click Removal across a passage or Repair on an individual, very small defect.

A recording may contain more than one type. Treat each problem separately and listen again after each change.

Remove steady hiss with Noise Reduction

Audacity’s Noise Reduction is a two-pass effect: first capture a noise profile from audio that contains only the unwanted, steady noise; then select the audio to clean and apply reduction. The profile should not include wanted speech or music, because the effect may mistake similar sounds for noise. Audacity describes the effect as useful for constant background sounds, but not for individual clicks or irregular noise. It may not produce a satisfactory result when noise is loud or variable, the wanted material is close to the noise level, or wanted audio and noise overlap in frequency. See the Audacity Noise Reduction manual.

  • Note: This audio capture card is designed for common use. For professional-grade needs, please consider a specialized device
  1. Select a representative quiet section that contains hiss but no wanted audio.
  2. Use Get Noise Profile to capture the noise sample.
  3. Select the section you want to clean, or the whole recording if the noise is consistent throughout.
  4. Open Noise Reduction, apply a modest amount, and audition the result. If the effect offers a noise-only preview, listen for speech or music in that output; recognizable wanted content is a reason to reduce the processing.

Noise reduction trades fidelity for quieter pauses. Strong processing can make a recording sound metallic or watery, or remove wanted detail. Audacity advises that “A modest reduction that leaves some noise behind usually sounds better than a total kill.” Keep some hiss if the alternative is damaged speech or music. See the Audacity Noise Removal & Repair manual.

Reduce a stable hum, buzz, or whistle with a notch filter

A notch filter attenuates a narrow frequency band, making it a better first choice for a specific, stable tone than broad noise reduction. Audacity recommends considering a Notch Filter for mains hum or a high-pitched whistle before Noise Reduction when appropriate. Inspect the spectrum or listen carefully to locate the tone, then use a narrow notch and check whether harmonics—the tone’s additional frequency components—remain. The Audacity Notch Filter manual describes the effect.

Do not widen or move the notch indiscriminately: speech and music may contain wanted sound at the same frequencies. Recheck the recording after filtering, particularly where the affected tone overlaps a voice or instrument.

Handle clicks and tiny defects

Use Click Removal for scattered clicks

Click Removal scans a longer selection for short, sharp spikes. Begin with conservative or default settings, then listen to a busy passage. Settings that catch more defects can also soften real transients, including drum hits, consonants, and instrument picking. Adjust cautiously and keep the version that preserves wanted attacks. See the Audacity Click Removal manual.

Use Repair for one isolated, very short fault

For a click that remains, zoom in and select only the damaged fragment before trying Repair. Audacity limits Repair to at most 128 samples and requires undamaged audio on both sides to reconstruct the fragment. It cannot repair a fault at the very beginning or end of a clip. See the Audacity Repair manual.

Follow a safe cleanup order

  1. Preserve the original. Keep an untouched copy and make edits on a duplicate, or work in a way that leaves undo available.
  2. Classify the defects. Listen through quiet gaps and busy sections to distinguish steady hiss, tonal interference, and brief clicks.
  3. Filter a stable tone. Try a narrow notch first when the hum or whistle is distinct; then check the wanted audio and any remaining harmonics.
  4. Remove clicks. Run Click Removal conservatively on a passage. Use Repair only for isolated defects that are small enough and have clean audio on both sides.
  5. Reduce steady hiss. Capture a noise profile from a noise-only sample, apply modest reduction to the target audio, and check the result—including the noise-only output where available.
  6. Clean before levelling or equalising. Later level changes can make residual noise more audible. If processing creates artifacts, undo or reduce it rather than stacking stronger effects.
  7. Compare fairly. Compare processed audio with the original at matched loudness. A louder version can seem better even when it has lost detail.

When to revisit the cassette transfer

Noise is not always best addressed only in editing. Audacity’s sample workflow for tape digitization notes that the need for reduction depends on tape quality, azimuth setting, tape-head cleanliness, and Dolby settings. These playback and capture conditions can affect the sound of a new transfer; they do not replace file-level cleanup for audio that has already been digitized.
