Act quickly: lift or blot off excess pigment, pretreat the mark with liquid detergent or a suitable prewash stain remover, and wash only at the hottest temperature allowed by the care label. Never rub wet face paint into fabric, and never put the item in a dryer until you have inspected it in good light. Powder makeup, oily cosmetics, water-based face paint and craft paint need different first steps, while sequins, stretch fabrics, foam and dry-clean-only materials require gentler handling.
What to do in the first few minutes
Fresh stains are usually easier to remove because the binder has not fully dried around the fibers. Keep the garment flat and work from the outside of the mark toward the center so you do not enlarge it.
- Check the care label. Note whether the item is machine washable, hand-wash only, dry-clean only, or unsuitable for water because of foam, padding or structural components.
- Identify the material on the garment. Powder makeup, oily grease paint, liquid face paint and craft paint do not respond identically to water or detergent.
- Lift loose residue. Blow or brush away loose powder. For a dry crust, use a dull spoon edge or the edge of a plastic card to lift the surface. Hold the fabric from behind rather than scraping aggressively.
- Blot, do not scrub. Use a clean, white, absorbent cloth for liquid or oily marks. Press and lift repeatedly, changing to a clean section as pigment transfers.
- Put a towel behind the stain. This catches dissolved color and prevents it from soaking into another layer of the costume.
Persil’s warning is especially important for face paint: “Hands off! Don’t rub face paint under any circumstances – otherwise you’ll end up forcing the paint deeper into the fibers.”
Choose treatment by stain type

Core method for washable clothes
This sequence is suitable for ordinary washable cotton, polyester and similar garments when the care label permits machine washing. Product directions take priority over these general timings.

- Remove the excess. Brush away powder or lift dried material with a dull edge. Do not push the residue farther into the fibers.
- Flush when appropriate. For a fresh water-based paint mark, rinse from the reverse side with cool or lukewarm water so the flow pushes pigment out rather than through the garment. Avoid forceful spraying that spreads color to clean areas.
- Apply liquid detergent or prewash remover. Cover the mark without saturating unrelated sections. Purex advises letting detergent work for about five minutes; Persil advises about fifteen minutes. Follow the product label if it specifies a different dwell time.
- Wash at the hottest safe temperature. The American Cleaning Institute recommends the hottest water that is safe for the fabric. “Safe” means the care-label limit, not the maximum setting on your machine.
- Inspect before drying. Examine the front, reverse and seams under bright light while the garment is still damp. If any pigment remains, repeat pretreatment and washing.
- Air-dry while evaluating. Hang or lay the item flat as the label permits. Do not use a tumble dryer until the mark is fully gone.
Why the dryer must wait
Heat can permanently set remaining pigment. The American Cleaning Institute puts it plainly: “Just make sure that the stains are gone before putting the garments in the dryer. Otherwise, the heat of the dryer may permanently set them, making them impossible to remove.” A faint-looking mark can become much harder to treat after one hot cycle, so inspection is a required step rather than an optional precaution.
Removing powder makeup
Loose powder on smooth fabric
Keep the garment dry while removing loose eye shadow, blush or setting powder. Hold it over a sink or outdoors and blow gently, or use a soft brush with short strokes away from the clean fabric. Do not add water until the loose particles are gone; moisture can turn powder into a concentrated smear.
Residual color after brushing
Dampen a clean white cloth and blot the remaining mark. A white cloth makes it easier to see whether color is transferring and avoids introducing dye from a colored towel. Apply liquid laundry detergent to the remaining spot, allow the label-directed dwell time, and launder at the care-label temperature. Check the garment before any drying heat.

Oily cosmetics contain a mixture of pigment and an oil or wax binder. Rubbing creates a larger greasy halo, so blot from the edge inward until no more surface product transfers.
- Place an absorbent towel behind the mark.
- Work liquid laundry detergent into the spot with your fingertips or a soft, clean cloth. Use only enough to cover the stain.
- Let the detergent sit for the time on its label, then rinse or wash as directed for the garment.
- Inspect the fabric before drying; repeat once if the mark is fading but still visible.
Purex suggests mineral oil for a stubborn oily stain only after testing an inconspicuous area. This is not a universal remedy: a test can reveal dye bleeding, a darkened patch or a finish change before you risk the visible part of the garment. Persil cautions that home remedies such as alcohol or chlorine bleach can damage some fabrics, so do not use either merely because the cosmetic is oily. Chlorine bleach is also inappropriate for many colored costumes and elastane blends.

Removing liquid face paint
Liquid face paint may be water-based, cream-based or formulated with a stronger binder. Treat it as soon as possible, but do not assume that a wet-looking mark is safe to scrub.
- Lift any thick blobs with a dull edge. Blot thin liquid paint with a white cloth.
- Apply liquid detergent or a prewash stain remover to the pigment. A degreasing stain remover can be useful when the formula contains oils, provided the garment label allows it and a hidden-area test shows no color change.
- Let the product work for its stated time. Purex’s general guidance is about five minutes; Persil’s is about fifteen minutes.
- Wash at the hottest care-label temperature, then inspect. Repeat the pretreatment and wash if the color is diminishing but remains.
Do not use vigorous agitation to compensate for a short pretreatment. Mechanical rubbing can drive face paint deeper, especially on knits, fleece and textured costume fabric.
Removing dried face paint
Once paint has dried, the first goal is to reduce the solid layer without breaking fibers. Place the garment on a firm, protected surface and gently lift flakes with a spoon edge or plastic card. Stop if threads begin to pull.
After lifting, identify the paint and check the care label. For a washable item, apply liquid detergent or a compatible prewash remover to the remaining film, allow it to dwell, and launder at the permitted temperature. Several short cycles are safer than one aggressive treatment. Rinse thoroughly between attempts so old product does not accumulate.
There is no reliable promise of complete removal from heat-set paint, non-colorfast dye or a fabric that cannot tolerate water. If the item is valuable, lined, heavily embellished or marked “dry clean only,” take it to a cleaner and identify the product used and whether the stain has been heated.

Craft paint is not the same as cosmetic paint
Water-based or washable craft paint
Rinse while the paint is wet, preferably from the reverse side. Apply mild soap or liquid detergent and wash promptly. Some washable-paint makers warn that certain prewash solutions can set their color, so the paint manufacturer’s instructions override a generic stain-removal routine.

Crayola’s acrylic guidance is to rinse the mark, apply a small amount of liquid dish soap, machine-wash at the hottest temperature the garment allows, air-dry, and repeat if necessary. This sequence is for garments that are machine washable; it does not make a structured or dry-clean-only costume safe to submerge.
When the paint is unknown
Do not combine products hoping that one will dissolve an unidentified binder. Remove the surface excess, photograph or note the paint brand if available, and follow that maker’s stain instructions. Mixing bleach, alcohol, solvents and stain removers can create fabric damage or hazardous fumes.
Sequined, beaded and stretch costumes
Costume construction can be more fragile than the face-paint stain. Spandex and polyester costumes, and garments with beads or sequins, are generally safest with handwashing when the label allows water. Turn the item inside out, use cool water and a mild detergent, and avoid wringing; press water out between clean towels instead.
OxiClean’s costume guidance calls for reading the care label, testing colorfastness with a damp white cloth, blotting with a clean white towel, rinsing with cool water and air-drying. Use that approach only on compatible washable fabrics. Do not use it on wool, wool blends, silk, silk blends, leather or dry-clean-only materials.

Colorfastness test
- Dampen a white cloth with the planned treatment solution.
- Press it on a hidden seam or inside hem for several seconds.
- Check the cloth for transferred dye and the fabric for a lighter, darker or roughened patch.
- Proceed only if the test shows no unacceptable change, and still keep the treatment localized.
Sequins and beads
Do not scrub across attached decorations. Blot around them, support the decorated panel from underneath and keep agitation low. A mesh laundry bag can reduce snagging during a permitted gentle wash, but it cannot protect decorations from a harsh detergent or excessive heat.
Foam, padding and structured pieces
Foam armor, shoulder pads, glued appliqués and wired shapes may trap water or lose their form. If the care label does not clearly permit immersion, blot the stain locally with a barely damp cloth, rinse by dabbing with clean water, and air-dry away from direct heat. Never force water through foam or leave a padded costume soaking.
Dry-clean-only, wool, silk and leather
Do not apply the washable-clothing process to wool, wool blends, silk, silk blends, leather or a garment labeled dry clean only. Water, detergent, rubbing and oxygen products can cause shrinkage, rings, dye bleed, stiffening or surface damage. Lift loose material, blot without spreading, and tell the cleaner exactly what was spilled, when it happened and whether any product or heat has already been used.

An oxygen-based, color-safe laundry stain remover can help with stubborn pigment on compatible washable fabrics after ordinary detergent pretreatment. It is not a substitute for reading the label or testing colorfastness.
- Confirm that the garment is washable and that the product label allows its fiber and dye.
- Test a hidden area with the mixed solution or powder slurry at the stated concentration.
- Apply or soak only for the product’s labeled time; stronger or longer is not automatically better.
- Rinse thoroughly, wash at the care-label temperature and air-dry for inspection.
Keep oxygen products away from wool, silk, leather, dry-clean-only garments and any costume with a manufacturer warning against them. Do not mix them with chlorine bleach, ammonia or other cleaners.

Troubleshooting common outcomes
The stain spread into a ring
A ring usually means the liquid edge dried before the center. Re-wet the entire affected area lightly with the appropriate detergent solution rather than treating only the darkest line. Blot from the outside toward the center, rinse evenly and air-dry flat if the fabric permits.
The fabric color came off on the towel
Stop the treatment. Rinse with cool water, keep the garment separate from other laundry and do not apply oxygen products or heat until you have confirmed the dye is stable. A cleaner may be the safest option for a valuable costume.
One wash faded the mark but did not remove it
Repeat the same compatible pretreatment once, respecting the product’s dwell time. If progress stops, changing to harsher chemicals can create a permanent light patch even when pigment remains. Consider professional cleaning for delicate or expensive pieces.

The stain went through the dryer
Let the garment cool, then inspect it. Do not run another heated cycle. You can try a hidden-area test followed by detergent pretreatment and an air-dried wash if the care label permits, but heat-set residue may not come out completely.
The garment smells of detergent or solvent
Rinse according to the garment and product directions before applying anything else. Ventilate the area and never combine products. Persistent odor, finish damage or a costume with glued components warrants professional advice.

Preventing the next costume stain
- Put a washable robe, towel or old T-shirt over the costume while applying makeup.
- Let face paint dry before dressing, but keep application tools away from the garment.
- Carry white towels and a small amount of the garment’s normal liquid detergent for immediate blotting.
- Store a stained item separately in a breathable bag so pigment does not transfer to clean clothing.
- Record the paint or makeup product used; its instructions can determine whether a prewash solution is appropriate.
The reliable sequence is simple: identify the binder, lift rather than rub, pretreat, wash only within the care label, and air-dry until inspection proves the pigment is gone. Delicate construction, unstable dye and heat-set residue are the points at which professional cleaning becomes safer than stronger home chemistry.
