To restore an unmodified GTA V installation, back up your saves and recordings, close the game, disable the mods folder and script loaders such as dinput8.dll, then run your launcher’s file-verification tool. Verification is normally safer and faster than reinstalling. If files were edited directly, verification fails, or the client still reports conflicts, uninstall through the correct launcher, remove the remaining game files, and reinstall the same PC edition (Legacy or Enhanced). Do not delete Rockstar user-data folders until your saves, settings, and recordings are safely copied.
The recovery path that fits your situation
There is no single “remove mods” button because GTA V modifications can live in separate places. OpenIV archive edits may be isolated in a folder named mods; ASI and ScriptHook-based modifications load through files beside GTA5.exe; and some tools alter the original archives themselves. Start with the least destructive option and escalate only when the game remains altered or unstable.

OpenIV uses a separate mods tree |
Rename mods to a temporary name such as mods_off |
Stops the alternate archive tree from loading | Reversible; your mod files remain intact |
| ScriptHook, ASI, trainer, or ReShade files are installed | Move dinput8.dll and mod-specific loader files out of the game folder |
Prevents script and plug-in loading | Reversible when moved to a quarantine folder |
| Original archives may have been edited | Run launcher verification after disabling loaders | Checks installed files and restores missing or damaged originals | Low game-file risk; user data is separate, but back it up first |
| Verification cannot repair the client, or conflicts persist | Perform a clean uninstall and reinstall | Removes the installation and residual files before downloading a fresh copy | Highest time cost; deleting user-data folders can remove saves and recordings |
These steps apply to the Windows PC versions obtained through Rockstar Games Launcher, Steam, or Epic Games Launcher. Identify whether you own the Legacy or Enhanced edition before reinstalling; mod tools and files are not automatically interchangeable between them.

Back up user data before moving or deleting anything. Rockstar’s clean-install guidance warns that deleting DocumentsRockstar GamesGTAV or AppDataLocalRockstar GamesGTAV can remove saves, settings, and recorded videos when they have not been copied elsewhere.
#1 Best Overall
- Will take full advantage of the power of new generation systems and PC to deliver across-the-board enhancements including increased resolution and graphical detail, denser traffic, greater draw distances, upgraded AI, new wildlife, and advanced weather and damage effects for the ultimate open world experience.
- The biggest, most dynamic and most diverse open world ever created and now packed with layers of new detail.
- Grand Theft Auto V blends storytelling and gameplay in new ways as players repeatedly jump in and out of the lives of the game’s three lead characters, playing all sides of the game’s interwoven story.
- Includes Grand Theft Auto Online, the ever-evolving Grand Theft Auto universe.
- All new content and gameplay created and released since the launch of Grand Theft Auto Online including new Jobs, an arsenal of new weapons, scores of new vehicles, new properties and player customizations
- Close GTA V and every launcher window. Also close mod managers, OpenIV, trainers, and overlay utilities so they are not writing to the installation while you work.
- Open File Explorer and copy the GTA V profile and save folders from your Rockstar user-data locations to a separate drive or a clearly named backup folder outside the GTA V installation.
- Copy any recordings, custom settings, screenshots, or configuration files you want to keep. Preserve the original folder structure inside the backup so individual files can be put back later.
- Confirm that the backup opens and contains actual files before uninstalling anything. A shortcut to a folder on the same drive is not a backup.
Do not use the clean-install step as a reason to erase both user-data directories. The game installation and the Rockstar user-data folders serve different purposes; remove user-data directories only when Rockstar support specifically requires it and only after verifying your backup.
Identify the launcher, installation folder, and edition
Use the launcher’s displayed installation location instead of guessing a default path. A PC can have more than one GTA V folder, especially after moving a library or installing both editions. Editing the wrong folder leaves the active copy unchanged.
Rockstar Games Launcher
Open the launcher, select GTA V, and use its game options to view the installation location and edition. Record the full path shown before opening File Explorer. The same options menu contains the file-verification command used later.
Steam
In Steam, open Library, select GTA V, choose Properties, and open Installed Files. The displayed installation path is the live folder, and the same page contains Verify Integrity of Game Files.
Epic Games Launcher
In Epic, open your Library, find GTA V, select the game’s three-dot menu, and choose Manage if necessary to see the installation location. The three-dot menu also exposes Verify.

Legacy versus Enhanced
Confirm the edition shown by your launcher or Rockstar account before changing files. Rockstar’s support materials distinguish GTA V Legacy and GTA V Enhanced on PC. A ScriptHook or archive modification built for one edition may fail on the other, so keep each edition’s files and backups separate. Reinstalling the wrong edition can leave you troubleshooting a compatibility problem that is unrelated to the removal steps.
Disable OpenIV archive modifications without deleting them
OpenIV’s mods workflow keeps edited archives in an alternate tree so the original game files remain separate. If your installation follows that layout, renaming the folder is the safest first test.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- Open the live GTA V installation folder you identified through the launcher.
- Locate the folder named
modsat the same level as the game’s normal archive folders. - Right-click it, choose Rename, and change it to a temporary name such as
mods_off. Do not rename it back until the game has been restored and tested. - Keep the renamed folder outside any automatic mod-manager scan if you use one. Do not delete it; it is your reversible copy of the archive modifications.
Renaming mods only prevents that alternate tree from being found. It does not prove that the original archives were never changed. OpenIV warns that direct edits can make actual game-file changes and recommends backups, so run verification even when the game starts after this step.
Disable ScriptHook, ASI, trainers, and visual injectors
Script-based modifications commonly load from the main game directory rather than from mods. A clean archive tree can still crash or display modified behavior if a loader remains beside GTA5.exe.
- In the live game folder, locate
dinput8.dll. This is the ASI loader used by ScriptHookV setups. Move it to a quarantine folder outside the game directory, such as a dated folder on your desktop. - Move the ScriptHookV files and any ScriptHookVDotNet files installed by your mods. Keep their names and folder structure in the quarantine folder so you can identify what was removed.
- Move trainers, custom ASI plug-ins, and other files whose installation instructions placed them beside
GTA5.exe. Common examples include trainer plug-ins and mod-specific DLL files. - Temporarily remove ReShade or another graphics injector if it was added to the GTA V folder. Preserve its configuration files in the quarantine folder rather than deleting them.
- Leave only files belonging to the unmodified game or the launcher. If you cannot tell whether a DLL is original, do not guess; let file verification determine whether it needs replacement.
GTAPoliceMods documents that moving dinput8.dll stops ASI and ScriptHookV modifications from loading. Moving files instead of deleting them gives you a reversible record and avoids accidentally discarding a configuration you may want for an offline modded copy.

Verify the installation through your launcher
After renaming mods and moving loaders, use the launcher that owns the installation. Verification compares installed files with the launcher’s expected originals and replaces files that are missing or damaged.

Let the process finish even if the launcher reports that only a small number of files need attention. Do not start the game or restore mod files while verification is running. A successful verification gives you a known file baseline; it does not restore files stored in your renamed mods_off folder or in your quarantine folder.
Test the restored client before putting anything back
- Launch GTA V through its normal launcher, not through a mod manager or a custom shortcut.
- Start Story Mode first. This checks the local installation without immediately involving official GTA Online services.
- Confirm that the game reaches the menu and loads a session without the crash, altered loading screen, or missing-file message that prompted the cleanup.
- Exit normally, then launch once more after a restart of Windows if the first run created a permissions or launcher-session error.
- Only after the unmodified copy works should you decide whether to maintain a separate modded installation. Never copy a loader back into the verified folder merely to test whether it was the cause; restore one component at a time in a separate, documented setup.
If the game still fails before Story Mode loads, proceed to the clean-install branch rather than repeatedly deleting random DLLs. Repeated manual deletion can remove files that verification would have restored and makes the cause harder to identify.
When a clean reinstall is the safer choice
Use a clean reinstall when a mod edited original archives directly, verification reports errors that return, the launcher shows an altered-client or permissions conflict, or the game continues to crash with all known loaders removed. Rockstar states that “A clean install ensures that there are no file conflicts or problems with permissions” in its clean-install article, last updated May 2, 2024.
A clean reinstall has two distinct parts: uninstalling through the correct launcher and removing leftover files from the installation directory. It does not automatically mean deleting your Rockstar user-data folders. Keep the backup from the first section available until the fresh installation has launched successfully and your saves have been checked.

- This Certified Refurbished product is tested and certified to look and work like new. The refurbishing process includes functionality testing, basic cleaning, inspection, and repackaging. The product ships with all relevant accessories, a minimum 90-day warranty, and may arrive in a generic box.
Perform the clean uninstall and reinstall
Steam copy
- Open Steam Library, right-click GTA V, choose the uninstall command, and allow Steam to remove the registered installation.
- After uninstalling, open the Steam library folder you recorded earlier. If a GTA V directory or mod-created files remain, delete only the residual game-installation files after confirming they are not your backup.
- Restart Steam, install the same edition you previously used, and wait for the download and first file setup to complete.
- Launch once through Steam, allow any Rockstar Launcher handoff to finish, and test Story Mode before copying back personal files.
Epic Games copy
- Open Epic Games Launcher, select GTA V’s three-dot menu, and choose Uninstall.
- Check the Epic installation directory for leftover GTA V files. Remove residual installation files only; keep your separate save and recording backup.
- Install GTA V again from the same Epic account and edition. Do not place the old
modsfolder or ScriptHook files into the fresh directory. - Start the clean copy through Epic, complete the Rockstar sign-in handoff, and test Story Mode.
Rockstar Games Launcher copy
- Open Rockstar Games Launcher, select GTA V, open the game options, and choose the uninstall action.
- When the uninstall completes, inspect the installation path shown by the launcher. Delete remaining game files and mod-created files from that directory.
- Reinstall GTA V from the launcher, selecting the same Legacy or Enhanced edition required by your ownership and saves.
- Run the fresh installation once before restoring backed-up user data or considering any mods.
Do not combine a Steam, Epic, and Rockstar uninstall casually. Remove the copy that actually owns the files, then use that same launcher to reinstall. If the launchers point to different folders, verify each path before deleting anything.
Prepare the clean client for official GTA Online
Official GTA Online requires more than a game that opens to Story Mode. Restore the normal launcher path, remove custom launch arguments, and ensure BattlEye is enabled. Rockstar says that launching GTA Online without BattlEye will not allow the game to connect to official GTA Online servers, and its BattlEye troubleshooting guidance was last updated February 24, 2026.
- Remove custom launch arguments from launcher settings, desktop shortcuts, and mod managers. Do not leave flags intended to bypass anti-cheat or load a special plug-in.
- Start GTA V directly through Rockstar Games Launcher, Steam, or Epic Games Launcher rather than through an ASI loader, trainer, or alternate executable.
- Confirm that BattlEye is enabled when the launcher presents its option. A bypassed or disabled BattlEye configuration is incompatible with official GTA Online.
- If Rockstar reports an altered client after these changes, stop trying to connect and complete the clean-install procedure. Rockstar specifically warns that an altered client may require a clean install.
Keep any offline modded copy separate from the clean online installation. The separation should include the game folder, launch shortcut, and loader files so an update or shortcut cannot accidentally start the wrong environment.

The game still loads modded content
Check that you renamed the mods folder in the active installation, not an old library folder. Then search the same directory for dinput8.dll, ScriptHook components, trainers, ReShade files, and other DLLs installed beside GTA5.exe. Run verification after moving them. If the visual or gameplay change remains, assume an original archive was edited and use a clean reinstall rather than deleting files by guesswork.
Verification finishes but the launcher starts downloading again
A download after verification usually means the launcher found missing or damaged files. Let it finish, then launch once with all mod files still isolated. If the same files are replaced on every verification, remove residual installation files and reinstall; persistent replacement indicates that the directory is not staying in the expected original state.

Verification cannot complete or reports permissions errors
Close every process that may hold a GTA V file open, including OpenIV, trainers, overlay tools, and another launcher session. Reboot Windows and retry from the launcher that owns the installation. If permissions errors continue, use the clean-install path; Rockstar lists file conflicts and permission problems as reasons to perform a clean install.
The game launches, but saves or recordings are missing
Stop changing files and check the backup made from DocumentsRockstar GamesGTAV and AppDataLocalRockstar GamesGTAV. Missing saves after deleting either directory cannot be fixed by verifying the game archives. Restore only the backed-up user-data files that belong to the same edition and account, and keep an untouched copy in case the first restoration is incomplete.
Legacy and Enhanced files were mixed
Separate the folders and backups by edition. Remove tools built for the other edition, reinstall the edition shown in your launcher, and verify that your shortcuts point to that folder. Do not copy a Legacy mods tree or ScriptHook files into Enhanced, or the reverse, unless the tool’s own documentation explicitly supports that edition.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
GTA Online refuses to connect after cleanup
Check that you are launching through an official launcher, BattlEye is enabled, and no custom launch argument or bypass remains. If the message identifies an altered client, perform the clean reinstall and test the unmodified installation before restoring any offline-mod files.
What to keep and what not to delete
- Keep the renamed
mods_offfolder until the clean game has been tested and you are certain you no longer need the archive modifications. - Keep quarantined loaders, ScriptHook files, trainer files, and ReShade configurations outside the game folder if you may use them in a separate offline setup.
- Keep your save, settings, and recording backup until you have launched the correct edition and confirmed that the expected profile is present.
- Do not delete
DocumentsRockstar GamesGTAVorAppDataLocalRockstar GamesGTAVas part of routine archive cleanup. - Do not copy old mod files into a freshly verified online installation. A clean directory is useful only while it remains clean.
Reinstalling from physical media
A boxed GTAV PC edition is a legitimate fallback when a digital installation is unavailable, but it has its own activation conditions. Rockstar documents that a boxed PC version includes DVD discs and a one-use Rockstar activation code. Activating that code grants the associated Rockstar account a download entitlement; it does not add the game to Steam. Availability and packaging vary by region, so confirm that the box is for Windows PC and that its code has not already been redeemed.
After activation, apply the same restoration discipline: back up user data, install the correct Legacy or Enhanced edition offered to your account, verify the files through the supported launcher, and keep all mod loaders out until the clean copy has passed a Story Mode test.
Quick Recap
Final restoration checklist
- Back up profiles, saves, settings, and recordings from both Rockstar user-data locations you use.
- Confirm the active launcher, installation path, and Legacy or Enhanced edition.
- Rename
modstomods_offif OpenIV is present. - Move
dinput8.dll, ScriptHook components, trainers, ReShade files, and other mod loaders out of the game directory. - Run the launcher-specific verification command.
- Launch the unmodified game through its official launcher and test Story Mode.
- If verification cannot establish a trustworthy client, uninstall through the owning launcher, remove residual installation files, and reinstall.
- For official GTA Online, clear custom launch arguments, enable BattlEye, and use the clean launcher path.
- Restore saves only from the verified backup and keep any modded setup separate from the online installation.
