The removal method depends on whether your phone treats Google Search as a normal widget or as part of the launcher itself. On many Samsung Galaxy and other Android phones, you can remove it with a long press. On Google Pixel phones using the default Pixel Launcher, the bar is normally fixed to the Home screen, so the same gesture does not show a Remove option.
First try the standard widget-removal method
This works when the Google Search bar is a removable Home-screen widget:
- Touch and hold the Google Search bar.
- Tap Remove or Remove from Home.
- If your phone displays a removal target at the top of the screen, drag the bar there and release it.
Removing the bar this way changes only the Home-screen layout. It does not uninstall the Google app, delete your Google account, remove Chrome, or erase your search history.
If no Remove action appears, do not keep repeating the gesture. Your launcher probably treats the bar as a fixed element rather than a user-added widget.

Google Pixel: the default Pixel Launcher usually does not allow removal
On a Google Pixel using the standard Pixel Launcher, the bottom Search bar is integrated into the launcher. The regular Pixel settings do not provide a confirmed, generally available switch for removing it, and long-pressing the bar normally does not expose Remove.
That means these frequently suggested instructions are not reliable on Pixel:
- Long-pressing the bar and expecting a removal menu.
- Turning off a Pixel search gesture and assuming the bar will disappear.
- Disabling the Google app as a universal fix.
Google’s documented Pixel setting is found at touch and hold an empty area of the Home screen > Home settings > Search settings > Swipe up to start search. Turning Swipe up to start search off prevents a swipe-up gesture from automatically opening search and the keyboard. It does not remove the persistent bar at the bottom.
Android 17 beta coverage has reported visual changes to the Pixel Launcher bar, including a slimmer design. Separate reports have discussed possible future removal controls, but those reports should not be treated as a confirmed setting on every current Pixel phone. Menu availability can depend on the exact Android build and device.

The suggested-app row is separate from the Google Search bar. You can hide the suggestions even though the bottom bar remains:

- Touch and hold an empty area of the Home screen.
- Tap Home settings.
- Tap Suggestions.
- Turn off Suggestions on Home screen.
You can also touch and hold an individual suggested app, drag it to the top of the screen, and release it on Remove. Neither method removes the fixed Search bar.
Samsung Galaxy and other Android phones
Samsung One UI and many manufacturer launchers expose Google Search as an ordinary widget. Try the standard method first: touch and hold the bar, then tap Remove. On some models, drag it to Remove at the top of the screen instead.
The exact result varies with the phone model, Android version, launcher, carrier software, and whether the bar is a widget or a built-in launcher component. Two phones running the same broad Android version may therefore show different menus.

If your phone will not let you move or delete any Home-screen item, the layout may be locked. This is common on some Xiaomi, HyperOS, OPPO, ColorOS, and realme UI devices.
- Touch and hold an empty area of the Home screen.
- Open Home settings or Settings.
- Turn off the option named Lock Home screen layout, Lock layout, or a similar label.
- Return to the Home screen and touch and hold the Search bar.
- Tap Remove, if the option is available.
There is no single Android-wide name for this setting. If you cannot find it in Home-screen settings, search your phone’s Settings app for lock layout.

Use a different launcher when the stock launcher fixes the bar
If the default launcher hard-codes the Search bar, a third-party launcher is the dependable workaround. Launchers such as Nova Launcher, Lawnchair, Niagara Launcher, and Microsoft Launcher provide more control over Home-screen elements, although the exact setting differs between them.
- Install your preferred launcher from Google Play.
- Open Settings > Apps > Default apps > Home app.
- Select the new launcher.
- Complete its setup, then touch and hold the Search bar if it appears as a widget.
- Tap Remove, or use the launcher’s Home-screen customization settings.
Some Android skins use a slightly different path, such as Settings > Home screen or Settings > Apps > Choose default apps > Home app. You can usually find the correct screen by searching Settings for default Home app.

If you later want the original interface back, return to the same Home app setting and select the manufacturer’s launcher.
Do not disable the Google app as your first solution
The often-repeated path Settings > Apps > Google > Disable may affect a widget-based bar on some devices, but it is not a universal removal method. On a Pixel, the bar can be part of Pixel Launcher and remain present even when Google app functionality is changed.
Disabling Google can also affect Google Assistant, voice search, Discover, search suggestions, and other features. Some phones do not provide a Disable button at all. If your goal is only to clear space on the Home screen, removing the widget or changing launchers is safer.

If the Search bar comes back
A removable widget may return after a launcher refresh, a system update, a reset of the Home-screen layout, or a launcher that restores its default arrangement. Try these steps:
- Remove the bar again after unlocking the Home-screen layout.
- Restart the phone and check whether the launcher restored it.
- Open the launcher’s App info screen and clear its cache. Avoid clearing storage unless you are prepared to rebuild your Home-screen layout.
- Check for a launcher or system update.
- If the stock launcher always restores the bar, switch to a launcher that supports hiding or removing it.
Clearing launcher cache is a troubleshooting step, not a guaranteed Android-wide fix. Clearing launcher storage can delete your Home-screen arrangement, folders, and widget placements.
Restore the Google Search widget later
If you remove a widget and change your mind, most widget-supporting launchers let you add it again:
- Touch and hold an empty area of the Home screen.
- Tap Widgets.
- Find Google.
- Touch and hold Search, then drag it onto the Home screen.
The category or widget name can vary by launcher. This restoration method applies to a removable widget; it does not create a new removal control for a bar built into Pixel Launcher.

FAQ
Why can’t I remove the Google Search bar from my Pixel?
The default Pixel Launcher normally integrates the bottom Search bar into its layout instead of exposing it as a removable widget. A long press therefore does not show Remove. Use a third-party launcher if you need the bar gone.
Does turning off “Swipe up to start search” remove the Pixel Search bar?
No. That setting only stops a swipe-up gesture from opening search and the keyboard. The persistent bottom bar remains.
Will removing the Search widget uninstall Google?
No. Removing a widget changes the Home-screen layout only. The Google app, Google account, Chrome, and Google Search remain installed.
What should I do if there is no Remove option?
Unlock the Home-screen layout first, then try again. If Remove still does not appear, the bar is probably fixed by the launcher. Switching to a launcher that supports its removal is the reliable workaround.

If you are using a Pixel with the default Pixel Launcher and no removal option appears, the bar is a fixed launcher element—not a normal widget. Hiding suggestions or disabling the Google app will not reliably solve that problem; use a customizable third-party launcher instead.
