If the gap persists, combine the clips into one continuous video and test it in OBS before going live. OBS does not document a setting that guarantees gap-free playlist transitions, so first identify whether the black frame is in the source playback or only appears on YouTube.
1. Check how your playlist is set up
OBS supports MP4 files in its built-in Media Source, while a VLC Video source can play a list of media files. VLC must be installed for VLC Video to work; the OBS guide specifies that 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC. See the OBS Media Sources guide.
- In OBS, find the source that plays your clips. Confirm whether it is a VLC Video playlist or a Media Source.
- If you need an ordered playlist of separate files, add or use a VLC Video source and select the MP4 files in the intended order.
- Check the playlist options: OBS documents Loop Playlist as on by default and Shuffle Playlist as off by default. Set these according to the sequence you want.
- Check whether scenes or source visibility change around the time the gap occurs. OBS documents that playback can stop when a source is not visible and restart when it becomes visible. Avoid making the playlist source inactive at a clip boundary if you want it to keep playing.
OBS describes VLC Video as supporting a playlist of items, but does not promise that transitions between those items will be gap-free.
2. Find out where the black gap appears
Watch the OBS preview or output while the playlist reaches a file boundary. Note whether the black frame appears exactly as one MP4 ends and the next begins, or during a particular clip. Also inspect the last frames of the outgoing file and the first frames of the incoming file: an encoded black frame inside either file is different from a playback handoff.

- Black appears in OBS at the boundary: focus on the source, visibility, playlist behavior, or the files themselves.
- Black appears within one clip: inspect that MP4’s start and end frames and playback in a media player; the issue may be part of the file.
- OBS preview is clean, but YouTube playback is not: compare the stream output and viewer playback before changing the playlist. YouTube’s live settings cover encoder connection details and delivery options, not a control for local OBS file transitions.
OBS notes that an inactive Media Source can show nothing briefly while it reloads. That is one possible cause of a blank interval when a source becomes active again; it does not establish that every VLC playlist inserts black frames between files. 3. Use one continuous video if separate handoffs remain visible
A practical workaround is to join the clips into a single continuous video before streaming. A single file avoids separate playlist file loads at each boundary, but it is not a guaranteed fix: the combined asset can still contain black frames, and playback depends on the file being compatible and checked.

- Arrange the clips in the desired order in a video editor.
- Inspect each join and remove unintended black frames or empty space in the edit.
- Export one continuous video in a format OBS can play. OBS’s Audio/Video Formats Guide covers supported media formats.
- Load the exported file into OBS and watch its transitions in the preview for long enough to cover the joins and, if needed, the loop point.
- Only use it for the live stream after verifying that both picture and audio behave as intended.
4. Consider a playlist plugin only if you need separate files
The third-party Media Playlist Source resource has update notes describing fixes related to playlist continuation after transitions and repeated paths. Those notes do not establish that the plugin eliminates every black gap. Check its current compatibility and release information against your OBS version before installing it, then test the result in OBS preview.
5. Keep the OBS problem separate from YouTube delivery
YouTube’s live-stream settings include the encoder stream URL and stream key, as well as latency choices. The cited YouTube guidance does not document a setting that removes a black frame caused by a local OBS source transition. If OBS preview is clean but the YouTube player shows a gap, compare the encoder output with playback and consider whether viewer buffering is involved; YouTube notes that lower latency may mean more playback buffering. Do not change the stream key or latency setting as a first-line fix for a black frame visible in OBS.

6. Troubleshoot by symptom
