Use the handheld’s system-level Key Mapping or Controls menu for a change that should affect everything. Use RetroArch’s Quick Menu → Controls → Port 1 Controls when you want gameplay buttons remapped for an emulator core or for one game. Save a core remap for every game using that core, or save a game remap for only the title currently running. On a one-button device, assign that button to the game’s most frequent action, move secondary actions to available directions or shoulder inputs, and keep a separate input reserved for opening the menu and quitting.
What “remapping” means on a one-button handheld
Remapping changes the action assigned to an existing physical input. It does not create another physical button. A single-button handheld can therefore make its one action button perform A, B, Start, jump, fire, or another command at different times, but it still has only the inputs built into the device, such as a directional pad, shoulder buttons, a menu key, a crank, or an attached controller.
There are usually two separate control layers:
- System or frontend mapping: controls navigation outside a game. A setting named Key Mapping, Controls, or something similar changes the buttons used by the handheld interface and, on some firmware, by all applications.
- Emulator mapping: controls the game core. In RetroArch/Libretro, the core receives the remapped gameplay input while RetroArch’s own menu controls remain separate.
Keeping those layers separate is important. A gameplay remap can make an awkward game playable without sacrificing the hotkey that opens the emulator menu. A system-level change can be useful for accessibility, but it can also make every menu and application behave differently.
Choose the right remapping scope first
| Scope | Use it when | Where it is stored | Main risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| System-level | You want the same physical-to-action change across the handheld interface or multiple applications. | In the device firmware’s settings, if that firmware supports saving the change. | A menu, pause, or quit input may become difficult to reach everywhere. |
| Core-level | You want one layout for every game running through a particular RetroArch/Libretro core. | A core remap file, saved from RetroArch’s Controls menu. | Every title using that core inherits the layout, even when its controls differ. |
| Game-level | One game needs an unusual arrangement while other games should remain unchanged. | A game remap file for the currently running title. | The layout can appear “missing” if you launch a different title or use another core. |
If you are unsure, start with a game-level remap. It is the narrowest change and is easiest to undo without disrupting the frontend.

Prepare before changing anything
Identify the exact handheld and firmware
Write down the model, firmware version, emulator frontend, and core used by the game. Menu names and hotkeys are firmware-specific. A shortcut documented for one handheld can open a different function, or do nothing, on another. Check the device manual and current firmware notes before relying on a key combination.
The Miyoo Mini FCC manual, for example, identifies a Key Mapping setting in system settings. That confirms the feature exists on that firmware family, but it does not establish that another handheld uses the same label or offers the same inputs.
Record the working escape path
Before assigning anything, confirm how you currently open the emulator menu, pause a game, and quit to the frontend. Test the sequence once while the original controls are still active. If a remap locks you out, you will know which documented hotkey or physical key to restore.
Make one change at a time
Remap a single action, test it, and only then assign the next one. This makes it clear which assignment caused a menu, direction, or shoulder input to stop responding. If the firmware supports exporting settings or storing profiles, make a backup first.
Change controls in the handheld’s system settings
Use this route for a global change. The exact labels differ, so treat the following as a method rather than a universal button sequence.

- Exit the game and return to the handheld’s main interface.
- Open Settings, then look for Key Mapping, Controls, Input, or an accessibility section.
- Select the physical button or direction you want to edit.
- Choose the action that should be triggered by that input. The firmware may ask you to press a replacement key rather than selecting an action from a list.
- Save or apply the change, then navigate through several menus to verify that directional movement, selection, back, and power functions still work.
- Launch a game and test the new assignment. If the game has its own input menu, check whether the system-level change is visible there.
Do not assume that a system mapping changes the emulator’s internal actions. Some firmware passes the modified input to applications; other firmware changes only the frontend. If gameplay is unchanged, use the emulator procedure below.
Remap gameplay in RetroArch or Libretro
RetroArch separates menu controls from the controls delivered to the running core. This is the safest place to change A/B, Start, a shoulder action, or another gameplay command while preserving the frontend’s own navigation hotkey.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Open the core’s control page
- Launch the game with the core you intend to use.
- Open RetroArch’s Quick Menu with the handheld’s documented RetroArch hotkey. The hotkey varies by device and firmware; do not substitute a shortcut from another model.
- Select Controls.
- Open Port 1 Controls. Port 1 is normally the first player’s input slot, which is where a single-player handheld sends its controls.
Assign each action
For every game action, select the desired physical button, direction, or shoulder input. On a one-button device, begin with the action the game uses most often. Then assign less frequent actions to whatever inputs remain. If the game requires simultaneous presses, verify that the chosen inputs can physically be held together.
Do not confuse the core’s action names with RetroArch’s menu commands. A field such as “A,” “B,” “Start,” or “Select” changes what the emulated console receives. It does not necessarily change the hotkey that opens the Quick Menu.
Save at the correct level
- Choose Save Core Remap File to apply the layout to games using the current core.
- Choose Save Game Remap File to apply it only to the game currently running.
- Return to the game and test every mapped action, including pause and any command needed to leave the game.
Libretro documents this distinction explicitly: a core remap affects the input received by that core, while a game remap is tied to the current title. A layout saved for one core will not automatically follow the same game when you launch it with another core.

Undo or replace a remap
Reopen Quick Menu → Controls → Port 1 Controls while the affected game is running. Replace the incorrect assignment and save at the same level as the original file. If the menu cannot be opened, use the handheld’s documented global reset, remove the remap file through its file manager, or restore the configuration backup you made before editing. The exact reset command is firmware-dependent, so consult the device manual rather than guessing.

Prioritize by frequency, not by the console’s original labels
Start with the command pressed most often during normal play. In a platform game that may be jump; in a shooter it may be fire; in a menu-heavy role-playing game it may be confirm. Assign that command to the single action button so the repeated motion remains comfortable.
Use every other available input deliberately
- Directional inputs: Keep up, down, left, and right available for movement unless the game uses a different directional scheme.
- Shoulder buttons: Use them for a secondary action, weapon swap, or a trigger that is needed less often.
- Menu or function button: Reserve it for the emulator menu, pause, or a device function unless the firmware provides another reliable escape path.
- Crank or auxiliary control: If the handheld has one, assign it only after checking that the emulator exposes it as a usable input.
- External controller: When docked or connected, use its additional buttons for actions that cannot fit on the handheld itself.
Remapping systems assign actions to inputs; they cannot supply an input that the hardware does not have. If a game requires two independent face buttons at the same time and the handheld offers only one suitable action input, a complete one-device solution may not be possible.
Keep a documented fallback
Write down the final assignments in the game’s notes or in a text file on the device. Include the menu hotkey and quit method. This is especially useful when a core-level layout applies to several games with different on-screen prompts.
Protect menu, pause, and quit access
The most damaging remap is one that works in gameplay but traps you inside the game. The Miyoo guide gives a specific warning: “Do not map the SELECT button. Otherwise, you may not be able to quit the game.” Treat that as a device-specific rule, not a universal property of every handheld. On another model, the equivalent escape input might be a menu key, a long press, or a RetroArch hotkey.

Before saving a layout, run this checklist:
- Open and close the emulator menu.
- Pause and resume the game.
- Return to the frontend without powering off.
- Navigate one level up and one level down in the frontend.
- Confirm that the button used for shutdown or sleep still performs its documented function.
- Restart the game and verify that the saved remap loads at the intended scope.
If any check fails, restore the previous assignment immediately. Do not continue adding mappings while the escape path is broken.
Use an external controller when the hardware is too limited
An external controller can provide the missing physical inputs, but compatibility depends on the handheld, dock, firmware, controller protocol, and connection mode. A controller that works over Bluetooth may not work over wired USB, and a controller supported in docked mode may not be recognized in handheld mode.
Analogue Pocket firmware examples
Analogue Pocket release notes illustrate why the firmware version must be recorded:
| Firmware release | Documented mapping information |
|---|---|
| 1.1 (2023-05-04) | Documents M30 Z/C button mapping over wired USB and alternate Analogue-button hotkeys. |
| 2.4 (2024-10-18) | States that controller remapping applies to all four controllers when docked, identified as a beta feature. |
| 2.5 (2025-03-18) | Lists mapping fixes for Switch controllers and several 8BitDo models, including the M30 2.4G controller, plus fixes for wired USB 8BitDo devices. |
These notes show that support can change between releases and connection methods. They do not establish current retail stock, price, or compatibility with every handheld. Check the exact model’s current firmware notes before buying or pairing an external controller.

Configure the controller after pairing
- Update the handheld and controller only through their documented procedures.
- Pair or connect the controller in the mode supported by the handheld or dock.
- Open the handheld’s controller or input settings and confirm that every physical button is detected.
- In RetroArch, select the correct port and repeat Quick Menu → Controls → Port 1 Controls if the game needs a custom layout.
- Test the menu and quit hotkeys with the external controller as well as the handheld’s own buttons.
Troubleshoot common remapping failures
The game ignores the new assignment
- Check that you edited the running core’s Port 1 Controls, not only the frontend’s system mapping.
- Confirm that the game launched with the same core used when the remap was saved.
- Verify that you saved a core or game remap after editing; changing fields without saving does not create the persistent file.
- Close and relaunch the game to test whether the remap loads at startup.
The remap affects every game unexpectedly
You probably used Save Core Remap File. Reopen the affected game, restore its original assignments, and save a game-specific remap instead. A core-level file is appropriate only when the same layout genuinely suits every title using that core.

The menu or quit command no longer works
Stop changing gameplay fields and restore the documented escape input. Try the original RetroArch hotkey, the handheld’s menu key, or the firmware’s reset procedure. If the device offers file access, remove or rename the remap file only after identifying whether it is a core file or a game file. Do not delete unrelated configuration files.
On-screen prompts are misleading
Some games continue to display their original button labels after a remap. Microsoft’s accessibility guidance treats updated prompts as part of full remapping: the interface should tell the player which control now performs an action. When prompts do not update, keep a written layout, use a game-level profile, and favor consistent assignments across similar titles.
An external controller is detected but buttons are wrong
- Confirm the controller’s connection mode and the handheld’s supported protocol.
- Check whether a firmware update changed button mapping or hotkeys.
- Map the controller in the handheld’s controller settings before editing the emulator’s Port 1 profile.
- Test one controller at a time so the wrong port is not being edited.
A practical decision path
- Need the change everywhere? Open the firmware’s system-level Key Mapping or Controls menu.
- Need it only during gameplay? Leave the frontend mapping alone and edit RetroArch’s Port 1 Controls.
- Need one layout for a console or core? Save a Core Remap File.
- Need one unusual title? Save a Game Remap File.
- Have fewer physical inputs than the game requires? Reassign secondary actions to shoulders, a crank, or an external controller, then decide whether the game remains practical on one button.
- Could you lose the menu? Reserve and test the documented escape input before saving.
What the evidence does—and does not—establish
Official documentation supports the existence of a system-level Key Mapping setting on the Miyoo Mini FCC manual, the core-versus-game distinction in Libretro, and firmware-specific controller mapping behavior on Analogue Pocket. Microsoft’s accessibility guidance defines full remapping as choosing which action is assigned to each control and calls for prompts that reflect the new assignment.
There is no cross-handheld statistic in these sources for remapping reliability, input latency, or success rate. Performance should therefore be judged on the exact handheld, firmware, emulator core, and controller connection you use rather than on a universal percentage or benchmark.
Quick Recap
Final verification checklist
- Record the handheld model, firmware, emulator core, and connection mode.
- Choose system, core, or game scope before editing.
- Assign the one action button to the most frequent command.
- Use remaining directions, shoulders, menu inputs, or an external controller for secondary commands.
- Keep the menu and quit path untouched until the new layout is tested.
- Save at the intended scope and relaunch the game.
- Check prompts, pause, quit, and frontend navigation.
- Document the final layout and the recovery method.
