Use the Xbox Accessories app to remap the XBOX Nano Controller. On an Xbox Series X|S or Xbox One, open the app, select the Nano, choose Configure, create or edit a profile, assign the buttons the app offers, save, and test it. On Windows 10 or 11, the same workflow applies, but Microsoft requires a compatible USB-C cable for configuration. The Action Button can be assigned to shortcuts such as screenshots and gameplay capture. Microsoft has not documented Nano-specific sliders for stick sensitivity, deadzones, or vibration strength, so those adjustments must come from an individual game’s settings when available.

What you can change on the XBOX Nano Controller

The XBOX Nano Controller is a compact Xbox controller announced by Xbox on October 14, 2026. Xbox describes it as a little over 5 inches long and 3.5 ounces, with all 18 standard gameplay inputs, an internal rechargeable battery, Xbox Wireless, Bluetooth, and a programmable Action Button. The US launch price is $49.99, with availability scheduled to begin in November 2026.

Its settings are split across three layers:

  • Controller-level mapping: Xbox Accessories profiles can change supported button assignments.
  • Action Button shortcuts: the programmable button can expose shortcuts such as screenshots and gameplay capture, along with any other functions shown by the app.
  • Game-level tuning: sensitivity, deadzones, and vibration controls belong to the game. Microsoft’s current Nano documentation does not confirm a universal controller menu for these values.

That distinction matters. A profile can change what a button does across supported games, but it cannot create a sensitivity or vibration slider that the Nano app does not provide. If you need finer aiming or vibration control, check the controller section of the particular game.

Compatibility, connections, and the cable you need

Device Supported connection or requirement What you can configure
Xbox Series X|S Xbox Wireless Xbox Accessories mapping and profiles
Xbox One Xbox Wireless Xbox Accessories mapping and profiles
Windows 10/11 PC Bluetooth may connect compatible PCs; a compatible USB-C cable is required for Windows button mapping Xbox Accessories mapping and profiles through the Windows app
Android or iOS device Bluetooth on compatible devices Use the game or device controls that are available; Microsoft’s listed Nano mapping workflow is for Xbox consoles and Windows 10/11
Compatible smart TV Bluetooth Game or service controls supplied by that platform

The Nano has an internal rechargeable battery. USB-C is required for charging, and Microsoft also requires a compatible USB-C cable for Windows configuration. The cable is listed separately in the specifications, so check the package or retailer bundle before starting a PC setup. A cable that only supplies power may not provide the data connection needed by the Windows app; use a compatible cable intended for controller data and charging.

Remap buttons on an Xbox console

Before you begin

  • Turn on the Nano and connect it to the console with Xbox Wireless.
  • Install or update the Xbox Accessories app on the console if it is not already present.
  • Keep the controller charged so it does not disconnect while the profile is being saved.
  • Decide whether you want to edit the active profile or create a separate layout for a particular game.

Step-by-step console workflow

  1. Open the Xbox Accessories app on the Xbox Series X|S or Xbox One.
  2. Select the connected XBOX Nano Controller from the device list.
  3. Choose Configure.
  4. Select New profile to make a separate layout, or choose an existing profile to edit it.
  5. Select a button assignment and choose one of the functions that the app exposes for that controller and platform. The available choices can vary, so do not assume that every input can be assigned to every function.
  6. Repeat the assignment for the other supported buttons you want to change.
  7. Save the profile.
  8. Launch the target game, enter a practice area or a low-risk match, and press every remapped control to confirm that it behaves as intended.

Use a separate profile when two games use different layouts. This avoids changing a familiar arrangement for every title and gives you a quick way to return to the default behavior if a remap feels wrong.

Remap the Nano on Windows 10 or 11

Connect the controller correctly

For Windows configuration, connect the Nano with a compatible USB-C cable before opening the configuration controls. Microsoft specifically requires the cable for Windows button mapping, even though the controller also supports Bluetooth on compatible PCs. If the app does not detect the Nano, reconnect the cable at both ends, try another USB port, and confirm that the cable supports data rather than charging only.

Windows configuration steps

  1. Power on the Nano and connect it to the Windows 10 or Windows 11 PC with the compatible USB-C cable.
  2. Open the Xbox Accessories app.
  3. Select the Nano from the connected accessories shown by the app.
  4. Click or select Configure.
  5. Create a new profile or open the profile you want to change.
  6. Assign each supported button using only the choices displayed in the app.
  7. Save the profile, then disconnect or leave the cable connected according to how you intend to play.
  8. Test the layout in the game’s practice area before using it in a competitive or otherwise high-stakes session.

If Bluetooth is your normal PC connection, configure the profile over USB-C first. The documented Windows mapping workflow depends on the cable; Bluetooth compatibility by itself does not establish that the app can write a profile wirelessly.

Configure the Action Button

The Action Button is the Nano’s programmable extra control. Xbox says it can be customized for screenshots, gameplay capture, and other frequently used shortcuts. Its exact choices are determined by what the Xbox Accessories app exposes for the connected Nano and platform.

  1. Connect the controller to an Xbox console or Windows PC using the applicable method.
  2. Open Xbox Accessories, select the Nano, and choose Configure.
  3. Open a new profile or edit an existing one.
  4. Select the Action Button in the configuration screen.
  5. Choose a listed shortcut, such as a screenshot or gameplay-capture command, or another function shown by the app.
  6. Save the profile and press the Action Button outside a critical game moment to verify the result.

Do not rely on a shortcut in a tournament, ranked match, or important recording until you have tested what the app assigned and confirmed where the resulting file or capture appears on your platform.

Can you adjust sensitivity, deadzones, or vibration?

Stick sensitivity

Microsoft’s current product and Store information establishes button mapping and the programmable Action Button, but does not document a Nano-specific stick-sensitivity slider in Xbox Accessories. Look in the game’s controller, aiming, or input settings for sensitivity controls. A game may provide separate horizontal, vertical, camera, or aiming values; those are game settings rather than controller firmware settings.

Stick deadzones

The official Nano information does not confirm a universal deadzone editor. If a game offers inner or outer deadzone values, adjust them there and test for drift and precise low-speed movement. If the game has no deadzone control, the Xbox Accessories app should not be assumed to provide one.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Vibration strength

No Nano-specific vibration-strength control is documented in the current Xbox Accessories information. Use the game’s vibration or controller-feedback option when present. Some games offer only an on/off switch, while others provide an intensity slider; the available control is title-dependent.

Setting Where to look What is currently established
Button remapping Xbox Accessories > Nano > Configure Supported on Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, and Windows 10/11
Action Button behavior Xbox Accessories profile configuration Shortcuts include screenshots, gameplay capture, and other functions exposed by the app
Stick sensitivity Individual game settings No universal Nano slider documented
Stick deadzones Individual game settings No universal Nano editor documented
Vibration strength Individual game settings No universal Nano strength control documented

How to test a remap without losing control

  1. Start with one change rather than replacing the entire layout at once.
  2. Save the profile with a descriptive name that identifies the game or purpose.
  3. Open a practice range, tutorial, or offline area where an accidental input has limited consequences.
  4. Check movement, camera control, jump or interact actions, menu navigation, and the Action Button separately.
  5. Test combinations you use frequently, such as movement plus an action or aiming plus a bumper press.
  6. Return to Xbox Accessories if a control is uncomfortable, unavailable, or assigned differently from what you expected.

The app’s choices are authoritative for that connected controller and platform. If a desired assignment is not listed, the Nano profile cannot be assumed to support it. Use the game’s own remapping page for functions that are not exposed by Xbox Accessories.

Troubleshoot common setup problems

The Nano is not listed in Xbox Accessories

  • Confirm that the controller is powered on and connected to the console or PC.
  • On Windows, connect the compatible USB-C data cable; Bluetooth pairing alone does not replace the documented cable requirement for mapping.
  • Try a different USB port and reconnect the cable firmly.
  • Close and reopen Xbox Accessories, then check the device list again.
  • Make sure the app and the console or Windows installation are current enough to recognize the newly launched controller.

The profile saves but the game still uses the old layout

  • Verify that the intended profile is selected and saved rather than an earlier profile.
  • Test outside the game first, then restart the game if it cached the previous controller state.
  • Check whether the game applies its own controller preset or remapping layer after the Xbox profile.
  • Remove one assignment temporarily and test again to isolate a conflicting input.

A shortcut does not appear for the Action Button

Action Button functions are limited to the choices the app presents for the connected Nano and platform. If screenshots or gameplay capture are not listed, use the platform’s standard capture control or the game’s own shortcut instead of assuming the button supports an undocumented command.

The controller disconnects during setup

  • Charge the internal battery before editing a profile.
  • For Windows, keep the USB-C connection secure while saving and testing.
  • Reduce unnecessary wireless connections during initial pairing, then reconnect the controller using Xbox Wireless or Bluetooth as appropriate for the device.

Choosing the right connection after configuration

Use Xbox Wireless when playing on an Xbox console because that is the console connection Microsoft lists for the Nano. Use Bluetooth for compatible Windows PCs, tablets, iOS devices, Android devices, or smart TVs when that platform supports the controller. Configuration and play are separate decisions on Windows: the controller can be Bluetooth-compatible, while the documented button-mapping process still requires a compatible USB-C cable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Remember that Bluetooth support is listed for compatible devices, not every model or operating-system build. If a phone, tablet, or television cannot pair, consult that device’s controller-compatibility information rather than treating Bluetooth as universal.

What the Nano’s compact design means for setup

At a little over 5 inches long and 3.5 ounces, the Nano is shorter and lighter than most modern smartphones, according to James Hunter, General Manager of Xbox Accessories, in the October 14, 2026 announcement. It still includes the 18 standard gameplay inputs, so remapping is about adapting the layout to your hands or a game rather than removing core controls.

The internal rechargeable battery means you do not install disposable cells. USB-C remains important for two separate reasons: charging the controller and configuring button mappings on Windows. Because the cable is sold separately in the listed specifications, verify what is included with your particular package before planning a PC setup.

Quick decision guide

Your goal Use this path
Move jump, crouch, menu, or other supported inputs Xbox Accessories profile mapping
Assign a screenshot or gameplay-capture shortcut Action Button configuration in Xbox Accessories
Change aim or camera speed The individual game’s sensitivity controls
Reduce stick drift caused by an overly small input threshold The game’s deadzone controls, if it provides them
Make rumble weaker or stronger The game’s vibration setting, if available
Configure on Windows Xbox Accessories with a compatible USB-C cable
Play on an Xbox console Xbox Wireless and Xbox Accessories
Play on a compatible mobile device or smart TV Bluetooth and that platform’s game or service controls

What to remember

  • Xbox Accessories is the supported remapping location on Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, and Windows 10/11.
  • Windows mapping requires a compatible USB-C cable, even though the Nano also supports Bluetooth on compatible PCs.
  • The Action Button can handle screenshots, gameplay capture, and other shortcuts shown by the app.
  • Sensitivity, deadzones, and vibration strength are not currently documented as universal Nano controls; look in each game for those options.
  • Save and test every profile in a safe practice area before using it in competitive or high-stakes play.
