Eligible Indian citizens can apply to register online through the Election Commission of India (ECI) Citizen Service Portal using Form 6; eligible overseas Indian citizens use Form 6A. You must meet the age and ordinary-residence rules, provide the required details and evidence, and check the official portal for current application and election notices.
Who can register as a voter in India?
You must be an Indian citizen, at least 18 on a qualifying date, and ordinarily resident in the constituency where you apply. The four qualifying dates are 1 January, 1 April, 1 July and 1 October. See the ECI Citizen Service Portal for current official services and notices.
Turning 18 does not by itself guarantee immediate enrollment or inclusion in the roll for a particular election. Check the electoral roll and the relevant election schedule.
If you are approaching 18
You may submit Form 6 in advance if you will reach 18 on one of the qualifying dates. The Electoral Registration Officer (ERO) processes the application in the quarter in which you attain qualifying age. Election-specific deadlines can affect when your name appears in a roll, so check current ECI and state Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) notices.

Choose the right registration form

The ECI portal labels Form 6 as “New Voter Registration” and Form 6A as overseas registration. Form 8 is for existing electors; do not file a second Form 6 just because you moved or need to update your record. An overseas applicant must remain an Indian citizen and apply for the constituency corresponding to the Indian address in their passport.
What documents and information should you prepare?
For Form 6, prepare your personal particulars, date of birth, complete ordinary-residence address including PIN code, a recent photograph, and self-attested supporting evidence. The paper form specifies an unsigned colour passport-size photograph measuring 4.5 cm × 3.5 cm with a white background. Follow the current online form or paper form for its precise upload and evidence requirements.

Age evidence
Form 6 lists a birth certificate, Aadhaar card, PAN card, driving licence, Class X or XII certificate from the specified education boards, and Indian passport as possible date-of-birth evidence. If you do not have one of these, the form lets you specify another document; ECI guidance says you may be asked to appear for verification.
Residence evidence and Aadhaar
Residence proof may be a listed document in your own name or in a parent’s or spouse’s name. Check the current Form 6 and its appended guidelines for accepted documents. Aadhaar is not compulsory: the form provides an option for applicants who do not have an Aadhaar number and cannot furnish one. You do not need to obtain Aadhaar before applying.

Form 6A evidence
Form 6A requires passport-related evidence, including relevant passport pages. Follow the current form’s instructions and any directions from the ERO handling the application.
How to apply online using the ECI portal
- Check the electoral roll first. Use the ECI portal’s electoral-roll search to see whether you are already enrolled and avoid a duplicate application.
- Open the official portal. Go to https://voters.eci.gov.in/ and sign in or create an account as prompted.
- Select the form. Choose Form 6 for ordinary new registration or Form 6A for eligible overseas registration.
- Enter your details and address. Use the address where you are ordinarily resident for Form 6. For Form 6A, use the Indian address shown in your passport.
- Upload the requested evidence. Include the photograph and supporting documents called for by the form. Online submission does not remove the evidence requirements.
- Submit and save the reference details. Keep the acknowledgment or application reference so you can follow the status through official services.
- Follow up if asked. Respond to any verification request, and check the ECI portal and your state CEO’s notices for current instructions.
Can you apply offline?
Yes. ECI guidance describes submitting the relevant application to the ERO or Assistant Electoral Registration Officer (AERO), by post, or to the area Booth Level Officer (BLO). The same form and supporting-evidence requirements apply. Local submission arrangements can vary, so confirm the current route with the ECI portal or your state CEO.

Special cases
Students
Students may apply at their parents’ address or at the hostel or mess where they ordinarily reside. Choose the address that reflects the applicable ordinary-residence circumstances and provide the supporting evidence requested for that address.
Applicants without usual residence documents
ECI guidance describes field verification in certain cases, including eligible homeless Indian citizens living in sheds or on pavements. This is a way to verify an application when documentary residence proof is unavailable; it does not waive the citizenship, age or ordinary-residence eligibility rules.

Overseas Indian citizens
Use Form 6A only if you are an Indian citizen living overseas and have not acquired foreign citizenship. Your constituency is determined by the Indian address recorded in your passport, and the form requires passport-related evidence.
Already registered but moved
Use the ECI portal’s Form 8 service for shifting, correction, replacement EPIC or PwD marking. Form 6 is for first-time ordinary registration.
How long does registration take?
There is no universal processing-time or EPIC-delivery deadline established in the ECI guidance described here. Timing can depend on verification, local roll activity and election-specific schedules. Track your reference through official services and consult current ECI or state CEO notices rather than relying on a fixed estimate.
