There is no single “refresh” command that fixes every slow, frozen, or unreliable LG Smart TV. Start by identifying whether the trouble affects one app, the internet connection, or the whole TV; then check the network and app, look for a software update, and consider a factory reset only if less disruptive steps fail. A full reset removes installed apps and saved personal settings.
First identify what needs refreshing
A slow home screen, one app that freezes, and a TV that cannot reach online services are different problems and call for different checks. A factory reset is not automatically the right response to a frozen TV.
- One app misbehaves: Check that app and the connection before resetting the TV.
- Several internet-dependent features fail: Check the TV’s network status and its connection to the router.
- Menus are unusually slow or the whole interface freezes: Check for available software updates; if the problem persists, a reset may be an option.
- A peripheral or picture/sound setting is the issue: Use the relevant support or diagnostic option rather than assuming a system reset will help.
Check the network and app first
If an app will not load or keeps freezing
Check the TV’s network status and confirm its Wi-Fi or wired connection to the router is working. If possible, connect the TV to another network, such as a mobile hotspot. If the app still fails while other services work, update or reinstall that app; contact its provider if the problem continues. LG’s app troubleshooting guidance covers app launch and freezing problems.
If an app will not install
Check that the TV is signed in to an LG account and connected to the internet. Confirm that the LG Services Country setting matches your location, and check whether the TV has available storage. Remove apps you do not use if storage is low. App availability varies by model and region; reinstalling or resetting the TV cannot make an unavailable app compatible. Check for an LG TV software update
When the TV can connect to the internet, use its built-in update check where available. LG’s standard-model menu paths are below, but labels and locations can differ by model and webOS version:
- 2020 and newer (webOS 5.0 and later): Settings > All Settings > Support > Software Update > Check for Updates.
- 2019 and earlier (webOS 4.5 and earlier): Settings > All Settings > General > About This TV > Check for Updates.
- Older NetCast TVs: Smart/Home > Settings > Support > Software Update > Check Update Version.
You can enable automatic updates in the TV’s software-update settings if that option is offered. Do not unplug the TV or disconnect it from the internet during an update: LG warns that doing so may cause a system error. See LG’s TV software-update instructions.

When a manual USB update makes sense
If you cannot update through the TV, LG also documents a USB update method. Download firmware for your exact TV model from its LG support page and follow the instructions for that model; do not use firmware chosen only by screen size or series name. LG’s manual method specifies an empty USB flash drive with at least 1 GB of storage and a computer with internet access. The drive is a requirement for that USB method, not for routine troubleshooting or an update performed through the TV. Do not interrupt installation.
When to factory-reset the TV
Consider a factory reset only if the broader TV problem remains after checking the network, affected apps, and available software. LG describes a reset as returning the TV to its initial settings. It removes installed apps and personal or account settings, so be ready to set up the TV and sign in to apps again. Do not turn off or unplug the TV while the reset is in progress.

LG lists these common paths for standard models; the menu can vary by model and software release:
- 2021 and newer (webOS 6.0 or later): Settings > All Settings > General > System > Reset to Initial Settings.
- 2020 (webOS 5.0): Settings > All Settings > Support > Reset to Initial Settings.
- 2019 and older (webOS 4.5 or earlier): Settings > All Settings > General > Reset to Initial Settings.
Some 2024-or-newer models offer “Reset all except network settings”; that option is model-dependent, not a universal reset mode. A lock feature may require the TV password. Check LG’s reset instructions for the model-specific details.

Know when a reset cannot solve the problem
LG says TVs made before webOS 3.5 (2017) may not support the latest web technologies and can fail to run apps because of performance constraints. A reset or update is not a guarantee that an older TV will regain support for a newer app. App availability also depends on the model and region.

For temporary picture or sound problems, LG Quick Help may be more relevant than a full reset. Depending on the TV, its options include Optimize for suggested picture or sound adjustments, Check Items to evaluate selected internal components, and LG Remote Service for a support agent to diagnose the issue. Quick Help paths vary by operating system generation; consult the TV’s support information if the menu differs. LG describes the feature in its Quick Help instructions.
