The reliable way to reduce VRAM and CPU use is to profile a representative packaged build first, then change the settings that match the measured bottleneck. Record the same route, camera, resolution, weather, traffic count and quality preset on the lowest supported hardware. Separate GPU, CPU-rendering, memory-capacity, memory-bandwidth and physics limits; a texture change will not fix an overloaded traffic simulation, and shorter draw distance will not cure a VRAM-capacity problem.
Unity’s guidance is explicit: “Before you make any changes, you must profile your application to identify the cause of the problem.” Epic describes profiling as analyzing CPU or GPU processing and memory use. Treat every optimization as a measured experiment: capture frame time, peak VRAM, system RAM and visible or simulation regressions before and after the change.
Profile the demo before changing quality settings
A development editor can distort results through asset databases, debugging checks and profiler overhead. Test a packaged build in the mode and resolution you intend to ship. Choose the route segment with the most intersections, traffic, vegetation, reflections or weather effects, because an empty straightaway hides the real worst case.

- Build the same packaged version for each test. Record engine version, platform, display resolution, graphics API and quality preset.
- Drive an identical route with the same camera position, weather, time of day, traffic count and mirror settings. Use a recorded input sequence if possible.
- Capture several seconds after loading has settled. Record average and worst-frame time, peak VRAM, system RAM, draw calls, visible objects, physics time and GPU passes.
- Repeat on the lowest supported GPU and CPU, not only on the development workstation. Keep a change log so a visual or handling regression can be traced to a specific setting.
Unity tools
Use the Statistics overlay for a quick view, then open Window > Analysis > Profiler for CPU and GPU timelines. The Frame Debugger shows which objects and passes generated draw calls. The Memory Profiler package identifies texture, mesh, render-target and asset residency. Physics Debug visualization helps separate colliders and simulation work from rendering. Capture a player build where possible; editor and profiler overhead can move the bottleneck.

Unreal tools
Use Unreal Insights for timed CPU and memory traces, the engine’s Stat commands for live CPU/GPU and memory counters, and RenderDoc for a frame-by-frame graphics capture. Epic notes that profiling tools themselves consume resources, so confirm a suspected bottleneck in a normal packaged run after making a change.
Classify the bottleneck from frame time and memory
Lowering every quality slider at once destroys useful evidence. First decide which resource is limiting the frame.
| Observed result | Likely limit | First tests |
|---|---|---|
| GPU frame time is high while the game thread is comfortably below the frame budget | GPU shading, overdraw, shadows, reflections or post-processing | Reduce shadow and reflection quality, transparent effects, post-processing and internal render resolution; inspect shader complexity and overdraw. |
| Game-thread or render-thread time is high, with GPU time lower | CPU-side submission, scene traversal, draw calls, lights, object count or culling overhead | Test LOD, draw distance, batching, frustum/occlusion culling, light count and shadow casters. |
| Frame time rises when texture or render targets are resident, and allocation approaches the GPU limit | VRAM capacity | Audit texture sizes and formats, mipmaps, render-target resolution and streaming residency. |
| GPU time changes little but bandwidth counters or texture-heavy passes dominate | Memory bandwidth | Use platform-appropriate compression, mipmaps and smaller formats; reduce sampling, transparency and high-resolution effects. |
| Physics or fixed-step time spikes with traffic, collisions or many vehicles | Simulation CPU cost | Inspect rigidbodies, wheel colliders, collision layers, solver settings, transform synchronization and traffic update frequency. |
Memory capacity and bandwidth are different problems. A texture can fit in VRAM yet consume excessive bandwidth when sampled at full resolution across many pixels. Conversely, a small render target may be bandwidth-efficient but still leave too many resident assets in memory. Use counters and captures rather than assuming that the highest-looking setting is the cause.
Reduce VRAM use without making the road look empty
Fix texture size and format first
Textures are often the largest individually visible VRAM assets. Give each asset the smallest resolution that preserves detail at its closest camera distance. A tiny roadside sign does not need the same source resolution as a cockpit instrument viewed from a few centimetres away. Downsize albedo, normal, roughness and mask maps independently; a normal map that is never seen close-up should not retain a hero asset’s resolution.
Use the compressed texture format appropriate to the target platform and texture type. Compression reduces both memory footprint and texture bandwidth, although the visual result depends on the format and source content. Inspect a build’s actual resident sizes rather than the source-file sizes in your asset folder: import settings, mip levels and platform overrides determine runtime memory.
Keep mipmaps for changing camera distances
Enable mipmaps for road surfaces, terrain, buildings, vegetation and other textures that recede from the camera. The renderer can sample a smaller level at distance, improving cache behavior and reducing shimmering. Mipmaps add storage, so an always-near, fixed-size UI or cockpit element may not benefit; make that decision per asset. Check distant surfaces for aliasing after any mip bias or texture reduction.

Stream large sections and high-resolution assets
Do not keep the entire route’s highest-resolution textures, meshes and effects resident if the player can see only a portion at once. Split the world into streamable road chunks and load high-detail assets near the vehicle. Unload sections behind the player when they cannot reappear immediately. Measure residency during a turn-around or a fast drive, because a streaming system that loads faster than it evicts can still peak above the memory budget.

A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11Streaming adds loading and transition complexity. Set a safe fallback mip or lower-detail mesh so a brief I/O delay produces a soft asset rather than a missing road surface. Test rapid driving, reversing and teleporting if those actions exist in the demo.
Reduce render-target and effect memory
Reflections, mirrors, shadow maps, ambient-occlusion buffers and post-processing targets can consume substantial VRAM even when texture assets are modest. Lower the resolution or update frequency of mirrors and planar reflections, and reserve full-resolution effects for the camera region where they are visible. Keep a separate record of peak render-target memory; texture compression does not reduce the size of an uncompressed render target.
Use dynamic resolution when the GPU is the limiter
Dynamic resolution scales render targets while preserving the requested frame-rate target. It is useful when GPU time, rather than CPU or physics time, is the limiting resource. The trade-off is image resolution: distant detail and thin geometry may become softer during demanding scenes. Set sensible minimum and maximum scales, test UI and cockpit readability, and do not use it as a remedy for a CPU-bound frame.
Cut CPU-side rendering work
Start with culling and draw distance
Frustum culling prevents objects outside the camera view from being submitted. Occlusion culling can remove objects hidden behind terrain, buildings or barriers. In a road scene, use per-layer or per-category distances: keep lane markings, nearby guardrails and traffic visible while shortening visibility for small signs, distant vegetation, utility clutter and decorative debris.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsOcclusion is not free. Its data can increase CPU work, RAM use and disk size. Keep it only when profiling shows that the avoided rendering work exceeds the culling cost on the target hardware. A long, open highway with little occluding geometry may gain more from distance-based culling than from a complex occlusion system.

Use LOD, instancing and impostors
Create aggressive level-of-detail transitions for roadside props, trees, barriers, signs and distant vehicles. A lower-polygon mesh and simpler material should replace the near version before the object becomes a noticeable silhouette. Instance repeated meshes so many identical posts or trees share geometry and, where supported, reduce submission overhead. For scenery that is only a distant shape, use a billboard or impostor instead of a fully simulated mesh.
Set LOD transitions from the driving camera, not an editor orbit camera. Check a fast corner and a crest in the road: these views expose popping and reveal whether a supposedly distant object becomes close in a single frame.
Reduce draw calls with batching where it helps
Static batching, dynamic batching where supported and SRP batching can reduce CPU submission work. Materials, shader variants and object transforms still matter: two objects using different materials may require separate work even when their meshes are identical. Batch repeated roadside assets, but verify memory use and build size; some batching approaches duplicate geometry.
Limit real-time lights and shadow casters
Every additional real-time light can add culling, shading and shadow work. Use baked lighting for suitable static road geometry, buildings and scenery. Keep dynamic lights for the sun, headlights and other elements that genuinely move, and limit their influence ranges. Reduce the number and resolution of shadow-casting lights before lowering the whole scene’s material quality. Small decorative lights can use emissive materials or baked contribution instead of real-time shadows.
Simplify shaders and transparency
Transparent vegetation, particles, windshield effects and layered decals can force overdraw because pixels are shaded repeatedly. Replace opaque decorative layers with simpler materials where the visual difference is minor, reduce particle counts and shorten effect lifetimes. Inspect shader complexity and overdraw in a representative view; a material that is cheap on an empty road can become expensive when a forest, rain and smoke overlap.
Tune the driving scene by cost center
| Scene system | High-value reductions | What to protect |
|---|---|---|
| Road and terrain | Stream distant chunks, use terrain/mesh LOD, shorten detail distance and reduce high-resolution surface maps away from the vehicle. | Collision surface, lane markings near the camera and the road silhouette at braking distance. |
| Roadside clutter | Instance repeated props, use impostors, lower LODs and cull by layer or distance. | Landmarks and signs needed for navigation. |
| Traffic | Use simpler distant vehicle meshes, reduce update frequency for far cars and cull vehicles outside the view. | Nearby vehicle collision, braking behavior and safety-critical signals. |
| Mirrors and reflections | Lower mirror resolution, update less often, reduce reflection distance and remove unnecessary reflective surfaces. | Close mirror readability and reflections that communicate road hazards. |
| Cockpit | Use appropriate cockpit texture sizes, hide unseen interior geometry and simplify gauges outside the player’s focus. | Instrument legibility and the steering wheel or hands visible in the chosen camera. |
| Weather and lighting | Reduce transparent layers, particle counts, shadow distance and the number of dynamic lights. | Headlight response, precipitation cues and lighting needed to read the road. |

Investigate physics and traffic separately from graphics
A driving demo can remain CPU-bound after every visual slider is lowered because rigidbodies, wheel colliders, collision queries and traffic logic run independently of rendering quality. Capture physics markers while changing traffic count and while driving through the busiest intersection.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed

Fixed timestep and simulation frequency
A smaller fixed timestep increases simulation updates and can improve stability, but it costs CPU time. A larger timestep can save work yet produce unstable suspension, tunneling or visibly coarse vehicle motion. Change it in small increments and check braking, wheel contact, steering response and collisions at the highest supported speed. If the project uses manual physics simulation, ensure it is advanced at a deliberate, consistent rate rather than accidentally running extra steps.
Colliders and collision layers
Prefer simple primitive or compound colliders for scenery and traffic where the driving model permits. Avoid mesh colliders for objects that do not need their exact shape. Configure collision layers so vehicles do not test against decorative particles, distant scenery or other categories that cannot interact. Fewer valid pairs reduce broad-phase and narrow-phase work.
Sleeping, synchronization and solver settings
Enable Rigidbody sleeping for parked or otherwise inactive bodies. Prevent unnecessary transform synchronization when scripts move many objects, and synchronize deliberately before a query that requires current transforms. Lower solver iteration counts or use a less expensive collision-detection mode only after testing suspension stability, stacked contacts and high-speed impacts. A physics saving that makes vehicles jitter is not a successful optimization.
Traffic update frequency
Near vehicles can update steering, collision avoidance and animation every simulation step. Far vehicles can often use a reduced decision frequency and interpolate visually between updates. Cull traffic that cannot affect the player, but retain enough hidden-state continuity that a car does not pop into existence or reappear in an impossible position.
A one-change-at-a-time optimization workflow
- Establish a baseline. Save the packaged build, route recording, hardware details, frame-time breakdown, peak VRAM and visual screenshots.
- Choose the dominant category. Decide whether the largest limiter is GPU shading, CPU rendering, memory capacity/bandwidth or physics. Do not mix categories in the first experiment.
- Test the least destructive lever. For VRAM, try platform compression, sensible texture resolution and mipmaps before removing visual systems. For CPU rendering, test distance, LOD and culling before deleting scene content. For physics, simplify collision pairs before changing vehicle behavior.
- Capture the same route again. Record average and worst-frame time, CPU and GPU frame time, peak VRAM, system RAM, loading behavior and any artifact or handling change.
- Keep, revert or combine deliberately. Keep a change only if it improves the target hardware without violating visual, loading or simulation requirements. Combine changes only after their individual effects are understood.
- Retest the worst segment and recovery paths. Drive rapidly into streamed areas, reverse direction, enter the busiest junction and trigger the heaviest weather or reflection case. Verify that memory is released and that frame time does not recover only after a long delay.
Compare candidate changes by the right trade-offs
| Change | Main bottleneck addressed | Potential benefit | Cost or failure mode |
|---|---|---|---|
| Texture compression and right-sized maps | VRAM capacity and bandwidth | Lower resident texture memory and sampling bandwidth | Block artifacts, normal-map loss or aliasing if pushed too far |
| Mipmaps | Bandwidth and distant texture quality | Cheaper distant sampling and less shimmer | Additional storage; unsuitable for some fixed-size UI assets |
| Streaming | VRAM capacity | Keeps only nearby high-detail assets resident | Loading spikes, visible transitions and more content-management complexity |
| LOD and impostors | CPU submission, GPU geometry and bandwidth | Fewer vertices, materials and draw calls at distance | Popping, silhouette loss or extra authoring work |
| Occlusion culling | CPU and GPU rendering | Skips hidden objects | Can consume CPU, RAM and disk; may lose on open roads |
| Dynamic resolution | GPU shading and bandwidth | Preserves frame rate during GPU-heavy scenes | Lower image resolution and softer fine detail |
| Fewer lights and shadows | CPU rendering and GPU shading | Reduces passes, shadow maps and culling work | Less depth, contact and night-time realism |
| Physics timestep, colliders and solver tuning | Simulation CPU time | Fewer physics steps and collision calculations | Vehicle instability, tunneling or changed handling |
Troubleshoot common results
“I lowered textures, but VRAM is still high.”
Check whether large render targets, shadow maps, reflection buffers or duplicated streamed assets dominate the peak. Confirm that platform import overrides were applied to the packaged build and that old high-resolution assets are actually evicted. A smaller source file does not guarantee a smaller runtime allocation if the build still selects an uncompressed or high-resolution variant.

“Occlusion culling made the CPU slower.”
Measure culling time, memory use and saved draw work on the same route. Open highways and sparse terrain often provide little occlusion, while the culling system still performs tests. Reduce its scope, rebuild data for the actual scene or remove it where distance and frustum culling already deliver the better net result.
“The game is CPU-bound even at low resolution.”
Lower resolution primarily reduces GPU work. Inspect render-thread and game-thread markers for draw-call submission, object traversal, lights, shadows, traffic and physics. Test LOD, batching, culling and simulation frequency instead of continuing to reduce image quality.
“The frame rate is stable, but the road looks empty.”
Restore visual importance in order: nearby road markings and barriers, navigation landmarks, close traffic and cockpit readability. Keep aggressive reductions on tiny distant props and hidden geometry, and use impostors or lower-detail variants so the scene retains a populated horizon without simulating every object at full fidelity.
“Streaming causes stutter or visible pop-in.”
Profile loading and decompression time, increase the preload lead distance for fast driving, lower the detail tier loaded first and provide intermediate LODs. Test reversing and sudden camera changes; a streaming policy designed only for forward travel can fail when the player turns around.
“Physics savings changed vehicle handling.”
Restore the last stable timestep, collision-detection mode or solver setting, then change one parameter at a time. Keep accurate colliders and sufficient solver iterations for the player vehicle and nearby traffic; apply cheaper settings to distant or noninteractive bodies first.
Validate the final build on the shipping budget
Set explicit budgets for worst-frame time, peak VRAM, system RAM, loading spikes and simulation stability on the lowest supported hardware. Re-profile after combining texture, culling, lighting and physics changes because one optimization can expose another bottleneck. Confirm that a route completed in the editor behaves the same in the packaged build, and retain captures for the busiest road segment, the heaviest weather, the maximum traffic count and a rapid transition between streamed chunks.
There is no universal percentage reduction for this unspecified demo: gains depend on engine version, route layout, asset authoring, graphics API and target hardware. The durable strategy is to measure, change the resource that is actually limiting the frame, and verify the result under the conditions players will encounter.
