The biggest controllable cost in a 24/7 audio stream is often not the stream’s continuous source feed but the traffic sent from your server to listeners. Reduce that delivery traffic by testing a lower bitrate and, where the content allows, mono audio; avoid unnecessary transcoding; then compare the traffic against your VPS plan’s transfer allowance and overage charges. Keep the codec compatible with the devices your audience actually uses, and measure CPU before moving to a smaller server.
Understand which part of the stream costs bandwidth
A continuous internet-radio setup has two traffic legs: a source or generator sends one feed to a media server, and the server sends copies to listeners. The source feed continues whether or not anyone is listening; outbound listener delivery grows with listening time and audience size. Liquidsoap describes this generator-to-server-to-player arrangement in its internet-radio toolchain overview.
This distinction matters when sizing costs. Lowering the source feed rate can reduce traffic on the generator-to-server leg, but reducing the encoded rate served to listeners affects the audience-scaled leg. Check which leg your VPS provider meters and what transfer allowance applies before assuming that one bitrate change will reduce the whole bill.
Estimate listener-delivery traffic before changing providers
For a rough first estimate, use the encoded bitrate and total listener-hours. With decimal megabytes and before protocol or container overhead:

Traffic in MB ≈ bitrate in kbps × listener-hours × 0.45
For example, a 32 kbps stream uses about 14.4 MB per listener-hour, while a 128 kbps stream uses about 57.6 MB per listener-hour. These are arithmetic estimates based on the stated encoded bitrates, not measurements of a particular service; actual network traffic can be higher because of protocol and container overhead. Multiply by total listener-hours, not just the number of people who visit the channel. If 20 listeners each listen for 5 hours, that is 100 listener-hours.
Then compare the estimate with the exact VPS plan’s included transfer, billing period, and overage rate. Add any separate media-server, CDN, or delivery fees, and account for where listeners are located if the provider’s terms vary by region. A low base VPS fee can be outweighed by outbound transfer charges.

Choose a codec your listeners can play
MP3 for compatibility
Liquidsoap’s encoding documentation describes MP3 as the widest-compatibility starting point. If listeners use a mix of browsers, apps, smart speakers, and older devices, test playback on those actual clients before replacing an MP3 stream.

Opus or Vorbis when client support is confirmed
Liquidsoap also supports Opus and Vorbis, which can provide good quality at lower bitrates in modern browsers. That does not establish universal compatibility: check the specific clients your audience uses, including any embedded players or smart speakers, and keep a fallback if your setup supports one.
Codec efficiency is only useful if the listener can decode it. A format change that saves traffic but excludes part of the audience is not a cost reduction without a service tradeoff.

Test bitrate and mono before committing
Bitrate and channel count are direct encoding controls. Lower bitrate generally means less traffic, but can make musical detail or ambience sound worse. Mono can reduce the amount of audio data relative to stereo, but it also removes the left-right spatial effect that may be part of a relaxation track.
Liquidsoap’s cookbook documents a 32 kbps mono MP3 configuration alongside a 128 kbps MP3 output. Treat 32 kbps mono as a test point from that example, not a blanket recommendation for music or ambient audio. Listen to representative material at the intended playback volume, especially quiet passages, sustained tones, nature sounds, and stereo effects. - Create a test output with one change at a time: first reduce bitrate, then separately try mono if stereo positioning is not essential.
- Listen on the browsers, mobile apps, smart speakers, and network conditions relevant to your audience. Check for artifacts, dropouts, and playback failure.
- Keep the lower-cost setting only if quality and compatibility remain acceptable; otherwise try an intermediate bitrate or retain stereo.
Avoid paying CPU to convert audio unnecessarily
Bandwidth savings can shift load onto the server. Liquidsoap notes that encoding and decoding are CPU-heavy operations. If audio is already in the format and settings you intend to deliver, avoid decoding and re-encoding it solely by habit. If transcoding, mixing, or resampling is required, measure CPU while the stream runs steadily and during playlist changes before selecting a smaller VPS tier.

There is no universal VPS size established for this workload: CPU demand depends on the actual pipeline and concurrent work. A lower transfer bill is not a saving if the server cannot encode reliably or needs a larger tier to handle the added processing.

- VPS base charge and billing period.
- Included outbound transfer, metering method, overage rate, and any regional differences.
- Separate media-server, CDN, or other delivery charges.
- CPU and memory tier needed for the real encoding pipeline.
- Reliability requirements, monitoring, and restart or recovery work.
- Expected concurrent listeners, listener-hours, and listener geography.
Provider billing terms can differ. Cloudflare says bandwidth is included in its plans and describes separate metering for Argo data transfer in its billing documentation. Its Bandwidth Alliance describes partner-specific transfer discounts or waivers. These are examples of why you should verify the terms for the exact provider and service rather than assume that all bandwidth is billed alike.
Cloudflare Stream is not evidence of an audio-radio replacement or a cheaper Icecast delivery option. Its pricing page describes video: last updated September 8, 2026, it lists $1 per 1,000 minutes of video delivered and says video delivery bandwidth is included. That is a video pricing example, not a verified cost or fit for an audio-only stream. See Cloudflare Stream pricing.

Troubleshoot the common cost and playback problems
The bill is higher than the bitrate estimate
Check whether the provider meters source ingress, listener egress, or both; verify the billing interval and included-transfer rules; and compare actual listener-hours with your estimate. Allow for protocol and container overhead, and look for separate delivery charges.
A lower bitrate sounds poor
Return to the previous setting, then test a less aggressive bitrate change. Compare the same representative tracks and listen for artifacts in quiet or sustained passages; do not assume the documented 32 kbps mono example suits your content.
Some listeners cannot play the new stream
Test the codec and container in the audience’s actual browsers, apps, smart speakers, and embedded players. If support is missing, use a compatible format such as MP3 or provide a supported fallback where your streaming setup allows it.
The VPS reaches high CPU or the stream becomes unstable
Check whether decoding, resampling, mixing, or encoding is happening unnecessarily. Measure CPU during normal operation and playlist transitions; restore a larger server tier if the actual workload cannot run reliably on the smaller one.
