To care for the set, clean it gently according to its manufacturer’s instructions and follow model-specific guidance for OLED maintenance. These steps can help avoid unnecessary power use and prevent some care-related damage; they do not guarantee a particular lifespan.
Reduce power while watching
Lower brightness and select an efficient picture preset
Set the TV’s brightness or backlight to the lowest level that remains comfortable in your room. Picture modes and brightness settings affect electricity use, though menu names and their precise effects vary by model.
The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) says the preset or default picture setting is the most efficient setting used to qualify a television for ENERGY STAR. Use that preset where available; manufacturers may label it differently, and it may not suit every room or viewer.
Check automatic brightness and local dimming
If your TV has automatic brightness control, it can adjust screen brightness in response to room lighting and may save energy when the feature is active. LED-backlit LCD TVs with local dimming can reduce or switch off parts of the backlight in darker areas of an image. Treat these as useful features to check, not as guaranteed savings or a specific percentage reduction. DOE describes these options in its television purchasing guidance.

- Various Monitoring Parameters: The power meter plug can monitor the power (W), energy (kWh), volts, amps, hertz, power factor, cost, minimum and maximum power (W), cumulative days and time of your appliances. By switching 7 display modes, you can easily know the various parameters while the appliance is working. The home energy monitor can also calculate and display how much power your appliance uses and how much electricity bill it cost in cumulative time
- Upgraded LCD Display: With large screen size 2.36 inch x 1.85 inch, clearer monitor backlit, our electrical usage monitor can display the data clearer and more visible no matter day or night. 180°full wide viewing angles is great for reading and recording the data in any angles. No need to stand on the front of the display and bend over to read the numbers
- Adjustable Backlight Time: Our upgraded watt meter has 5 options of backlight time. The default backlight time duration is 10 minutes(bL-0). If you want to change the backlight time, you can press and hold "UP" and "DOWN" button at the same time to enter backlight time setting, then press "UP" and "DOWN" to select the backlight time (bL-0 =10 minutes, bL-1=1 hour, bL-2=4 hours, bL-3=8 hours, bL-4=always on), finally press the "COST" to save the backlight time settings
- Overload protection: When the power of the appliance exceeds the overload power, the LCD will display “OVERLOAD” to warn the user. All the buttons will quit working and can only be workable when you lower or remove the load power. The default overload power is 3680W and is adjustable from 0 to 3680W. In general, you need to set the overload power to 1800W before using. Just press the "function" button for more than 3 seconds to enter the setting
- Data Memory Function: The wattage meter will record your power consumption data when you remove it from socket, or remove appliances from the electricity monitor. You can directly see the last data when you use it next time. This function can also automatically save the data when there is a sudden power failure
Review standby power and connected devices
Standby power is electricity a plugged-in device draws while switched off or not doing its main job. A TV in passive standby may use less power than one keeping network access or quick-start features active. Consider whether you need background functions such as voice control, scheduled updates, remote access, or fast startup before disabling them.
DOE recommends using a smart power strip for a TV and related components to prevent energy waste when the entertainment system is not in use. This can be useful when several devices remain in standby, but check whether a streaming box, receiver, or game console needs a network connection or updates. Turning off a whole group at the mains can also interrupt TV maintenance processes; check your model’s instructions, especially for OLED sets.

A DOE-hosted display-energy summary reports that some quick-start TV models used more than 10 W, based on historical Fraunhofer USA observations from 2017. That figure is not a current-market average or a prediction for a particular TV. DOE’s explanation of standby power is available in Measuring Standby Power.
What DOE’s energy and cost examples mean
DOE’s Federal Energy Management Program (FEMP) published the following 54.5-inch LED TV examples in guidance updated December 2024. They illustrate differences among models, not a forecast for a household’s actual bill.

| Example TV | Estimated use | Estimated annual cost | Lifetime energy-cost savings versus less-efficient example |
|---|---|---|---|
| Best-available model in DOE’s December 2024 selection | 133 kWh/year | $15/year | $47 |
| ENERGY STAR model | 168 kWh/year | $18/year | $31 |
| Less-efficient comparison model | 235 kWh/year | $26/year | Not applicable; this is the comparison baseline. |
The annual cost estimates assume electricity at 11¢/kWh, the average price at federal facilities as of July 2024—not a typical household rate necessarily. DOE’s lifetime savings estimates assume 1,825 active-mode hours and 6,935 standby hours per year, five years of product life, price trends, and a 3% discount rate. Actual cost depends on the TV, hours watched, standby behavior, and local electricity prices. DOE also notes that more-efficient products may have entered the market since its December 2024 selection; the “best-available” example is not a live ranking. See DOE FEMP’s television guidance for its framework and assumptions.

- Turn off the TV and unplug it before cleaning, following Sony’s guidance.
- Gently wipe the screen with a clean, dry microfiber cloth. Avoid touching any special surface coating where possible.
- Do not spray liquid directly onto the TV. Check the exact model’s manufacturer instructions before using a commercial screen cleaner or wipe; coatings and cleaning directions can differ.
Sony’s instructions are in How to care for your OLED/LCD TV. A dry microfiber cloth is generally the relevant tool in that guidance; a liquid kit is not required by it.

Let OLED maintenance follow the model’s instructions
OLED panel refresh is intended to adjust screen uniformity after extended use; pixel degradation can make unevenness visible. Sony distinguishes automatic refresh from manually starting Panel Refresh. For the Sony products and operating systems covered by its guidance, Sony warns not to run manual Panel Refresh more than once a year because it may affect the panel’s usable life. Follow your own TV’s manual and allow normal automatic maintenance to operate as instructed rather than forcing extra cycles. See Sony’s Panel Refresh guidance (last modified January 16, 2026).
If you are already replacing the TV
Compare the exact models and current energy-label information rather than relying on a display-technology label alone. DOE says smaller screens generally use less energy and LED-technology LCD sets tend to be more efficient. It also recommends checking for automatic brightness control and, on LED-backlit LCD models, local dimming. Estimate costs using your own viewing hours and electricity rate, and consult current ENERGY STAR information. DOE’s December 2024 best-available example was selected from the qualified-products list available at that time, not from a live model ranking.
