To use less space for new phone photos, choose an efficient format such as HEIF where supported, and reserve the highest resolution or RAW capture for shots that need it. If your existing library is filling the phone, use cloud optimization or transfer files to a computer instead: those steps free local space, but do not make the original camera capture smaller.
Which settings actually make each new photo smaller?
Three choices affect the photo created by the camera: file format, resolution, and whether you save RAW. The best setting depends on how much you crop or edit and whether the people or software receiving your photos can open the format.
| Choice | What it changes | Best suited to | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| High-efficiency format such as HEIF | The newly captured file | Everyday photos when your sharing and editing workflow supports it | Older devices or software may have compatibility issues. Apple says HEIF offers better compression than JPEG while preserving the same visual quality. Apple: Using HEIF or HEVC media |
| Lower standard resolution | The newly captured file’s pixel dimensions | Photos you do not expect to crop heavily or print large | Less detail is available for cropping or enlarging than at the higher resolution. |
| RAW instead of processed capture | The newly captured file and its editing data | Images you plan to edit substantially | RAW files can take much more storage. Apple says ProRAW retains more image information and produces larger files. Apple: About Apple ProRAW |
There is no dependable universal percentage for how much space a format change saves across phones. Results depend on the phone, image, and format. If you mainly want smaller everyday files, start with the camera’s high-efficiency format and use maximum resolution or RAW selectively.
How to reduce photo size on an iPhone
Use High Efficiency if your workflow supports it
- Open Settings > Camera > Formats.
- Select High Efficiency rather than Most Compatible if you do not need JPEG compatibility for your sharing or editing workflow.
Apple describes HEIF as offering better compression than JPEG at the same visual quality. If a recipient, app, or older device has trouble with HEIF, Most Compatible may be more practical. Labels and availability can vary by iPhone model and software version. Apple’s format guidance

Choose 12MP or 24MP instead of defaulting to 48MP
On supported iPhones, open Settings > Camera > Formats > Photo Mode to set the Main or Fusion camera default to 12MP or 24MP. Apple says supported models can use resolution controls for 48MP capture. Menu labels and supported options depend on the model and iOS version. Apple iPhone User Guide: Change advanced camera settings
Use the lower setting for routine snapshots if you rarely crop tightly or need large prints. Switch to the higher resolution when extra detail will be useful; more megapixels do not automatically improve every photo’s usefulness.
Leave ProRAW for images you will edit
Apple lists approximate ProRAW file sizes of 25MB for a 12MP photo and 75MB for a 48MP photo. It also says ProRAW files are 10 to 12 times larger than HEIF or JPEG files. Those figures apply to Apple ProRAW, not RAW formats on other phones; actual files and available capture modes vary. Apple: About Apple ProRAW
Enable ProRAW for a scene where its extra editing information matters, rather than leaving it on for every casual frame. It is a choice between larger files with more latitude for post-processing and smaller processed captures ready to share.
What to check on Android phones
Android camera menus are not identical across manufacturers or models. Look in the camera settings for options such as HEIF, High efficiency pictures, image size, resolution, or RAW, and consult the manual for your specific phone before changing them.
Google Pixel
Google’s Pixel Camera guidance places Storage saver under Camera > Settings > More settings > Device storage. Do not confuse this camera storage setting with the separate Storage saver option in Google Photos, which changes the backed-up copy. The Pixel guidance’s explicit Full HD resolution instruction concerns video, not still-photo resolution. Google Pixel Camera Help: Take photos and videos

Actual speeds may vary depending on the device used, interface, conditions of use, and other factors. Check whether your device is compatible with the microSD capacity; for example, if the device only supports a maximum capacity of 64GB, it may not recognize this Micro SD Cards’ full capacity of 128GB.
Samsung Galaxy
The Galaxy S23-series manual describes a High efficiency pictures HEIF option and warns that RAW saves picture data but takes more storage. This applies to that product family and manual; it does not establish that every Galaxy model or software version uses the same menu. Samsung Galaxy S23-series user manual

Cloud optimization and file transfer address existing local storage. They are different from choosing a smaller format or resolution for the next photo.

With iCloud Photos and Optimize iPhone Storage enabled, full-resolution originals are kept in iCloud while space-saving versions remain on the device when needed. This can reduce local storage use, but photos use iCloud capacity. Deleting a photo from one device using iCloud Photos deletes it across your synced devices, so make sure a separate copy exists before removing anything you intend to keep. Google Photos: Storage saver changes the backup copy
Google Photos offers Original quality and Storage saver. Google says Storage saver compresses photos and resizes photos larger than 16MP to 16MP; some images are not eligible for compression. This changes the backed-up copy, not the camera’s local original. Current Storage saver and Original quality uploads count toward Google Account storage, subject to historical exceptions for older uploads. Google says accounts include up to 15GB of storage. Transfer photos to a computer
If you do not want to rely on cloud storage, transfer photos you want to keep to a computer. Apple recommends computer transfer as a way to remove photos from a device. Open the transferred files and confirm the copy is complete before deleting local originals. A transfer is an archive workflow, not a camera setting that reduces the original file size. Quick Recap
A practical setup for everyday photography
- For routine shots: Use HEIF or your phone’s equivalent high-efficiency option when your usual apps and recipients support it. Use the standard resolution that gives enough detail for your typical cropping and sharing.
- For detailed crops or large prints: Select the higher resolution for the shots that need it rather than making it the default without a reason.
- For substantial editing: Use RAW selectively, then review and archive the files you want to retain.
- For a full phone: Choose cloud optimization if you want an automatically managed library, or transfer files to a computer if you prefer an independent archive. Verify backups before deleting originals.
