To make an Android screen recording smaller, lower its resolution or bitrate before recording, or export an existing video at a lower bitrate with a video editor. Lower settings save space but can make small text and icons harder to read, so check a short sample or exported copy before deleting the original.
Choose the right method for your recording
- Haven’t recorded yet: Check your phone’s screen recorder settings for a resolution, quality, or frame-rate option. Reduce quality one step, capture a short sample, and make sure the smallest text you need is still readable. Menu names and available controls vary by manufacturer and phone; Android does not specify one universal settings path for consumer screen recorders.
- Already have the video: Use a video editor or compression app to export a smaller copy at a lower bitrate. Reduce resolution too if necessary, then review the result at the size people will watch it before removing the original.
Video size is driven mainly by how long it runs and the bitrate used to encode it. Resolution affects how much detail is retained and how much bitrate may be needed to keep that detail clear. There is no reliable percentage reduction to expect without testing the particular video and export settings.
Make future recordings smaller
Check the built-in recorder first
Open the screen recorder controls on your phone and look for settings such as resolution, video quality, or frame rate. If quality is adjustable, lower it one level and record a brief sample that includes the smallest text and icons you need to preserve. Compare the sample’s readability before changing the setting for a long recording.
Do not assume that every Android phone exposes bitrate or resolution controls in its standard recorder. The available options and menu path depend on the device and recording method.

- 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
- 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
- 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
- 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
- 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)
Use Android’s ADB screenrecord only if you are comfortable with a command line
Android’s command-line screenrecord utility lets an advanced user set capture size and bitrate. It records MPEG-4, defaults to the device’s native display resolution when supported, and uses a default bitrate of 20 Mbps. Android documents --size for capture dimensions and --bit-rate for bitrate; its 6 Mbps command example is an illustration, not a universally recommended setting. See the Android Developers screenrecord documentation for supported options and usage.
The utility has a maximum recording duration of three minutes and does not capture audio. If native-resolution recording is unavailable, Android’s documentation suggests trying a lower supported size. This command-line route is not a way to unlock those options in the phone’s ordinary screen recorder.

- SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
- HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
- BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
- COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
- INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.
Compress a screen recording you already made
Export at a lower bitrate
In a video editor or compression app, choose an export setting that lets you lower bitrate. Android’s video-sharing guidance says bitrate has the most direct impact on the uploaded file’s size; reducing it generally makes the file smaller, but can also soften fine detail and text. Android describes transcoding before sharing as a point where resolution and bitrate can be changed. Read its video-sharing guidance for the context and trade-offs.
Lower resolution only when needed
If a lower bitrate alone does not make the file small enough, export at a lower resolution as well. Android’s sharing guidance gives the following approximate bitrate and 9:16 resolution associations. They are guidance for a sharing pipeline, not guaranteed best settings for every phone, codec, screen recording, or destination.

| Resolution for 9:16 video | Bitrate range in Android sharing guidance | What to consider |
|---|---|---|
| 1080×1920 | 5 Mbps or more | Retains more image detail, with a larger bitrate requirement. |
| 720×1280 | 1.5–5 Mbps | Android recommends 4–5 Mbps at this resolution for good visual quality in its sharing context. |
| About 416×736 (SD-equivalent) | 1.5 Mbps or less | Smaller output may make interface text and icons difficult to read. |
These ranges are not a guarantee of a particular final file size. Duration and the chosen encoding settings also matter. Inspect the exported file on the kind of screen and at the viewing size your recipient is likely to use.
Preserve a readable copy and the original
- Keep the original recording until you have confirmed the exported file plays correctly and contains the audio or other content you need.
- Check small text, icons, and motion in the compressed copy, especially if viewers must follow on-screen instructions.
- If the text is no longer clear, export again with a higher bitrate or resolution rather than relying on a smaller file at any cost.
- Delete the original only after you are satisfied with the smaller copy and no longer need the higher-quality version.
External storage can give you more room to keep recordings, but it does not reduce the encoded size of a video.

Why app developer settings may differ from phone settings
Android’s MediaRecorder API allows apps to set video bitrate, frame rate, and dimensions. The platform may clip an unsupported bitrate to keep recording viable, and the API reference notes that higher quality generally means a lower compression ratio. These are app-development controls; they do not establish that a stock screen recorder on every consumer phone offers the same settings. See the MediaRecorder API reference.
