If you can’t update Fortra Core Privileged Access Manager (BoKS) immediately, first identify your installed components and enabled features, then apply the vendor’s explicit interim restrictions. For the October 2026 issues without a published workaround in the advisory material available here, use carefully scoped containment measures and confirm them with Fortra. Record their operational impact and owner, and set a plan to install and verify the fix for your exact branch and component combination. These steps can reduce exposure; they do not remove the vulnerabilities.
1. Identify what is installed and which features are in use
BoKS centrally manages Linux and UNIX environments. The relevant risks depend on your installed server and client branches, components, enabled services, and integrations—not just whether a BoKS Master is present.
Inventory the Master, Replicas, Server Agents, and clients. Record package versions and whether each of the following is used:
boks_autoregisterdand client autoregistration;- legacy tar-installed clients that might receive upgrade or patch operations;
- CRL URL administration through BCC, WSI REST/SOAP, or the
cacrlcommand-line interface; bccgethostcertand access toBOKS_tmp;- BoKS keytab management for Active Directory service accounts; and
- the Server Agent
adjoinworkflow for Active Directory joins or password renewals.
Keep the inventory tied to actual hosts and owners. A feature that is not deployed may mean its associated advisory path does not apply, but confirm that against the advisory and your configuration rather than assuming from a product label or version alone.

2. Match enabled features to the relevant advisories
Fortra’s product security index lists eight BoKS advisories dated October 1, 2026 (FI-2026-012 through FI-2026-019). The indexed material describes issues involving password generation, temporary files, CRL handling, network parsing, autoregistration, SSH, and Server Agent behavior. It does not establish complete affected-version ranges for every advisory, so do not infer that a particular build is affected or fixed from this list alone. Match your components to current Fortra advisory and package information or ask Fortra support to confirm exact applicability.
| Advisory and path | When to assess it | What the advisory establishes |
|---|---|---|
| FI-2026-007, CVE-2026-9862 | boks_autoregisterd is deployed or reachable. |
Fortra describes command injection and rates it Critical, CVSS 3.1 9.8. Its June 15, 2026 advisory gives temporary restrictions described below. |
| FI-2026-008, CVE-2026-9863 | Upgrade or patch operations may target legacy tar-installed clients. | Fortra’s June 15, 2026 advisory describes command injection during those operations and limits them to trusted clients until fixed builds are deployed. |
| FI-2026-014 | bccgethostcert is invoked and local users may read files under BOKS_tmp. |
Fortra’s October 1, 2026 advisory describes predictable temporary files that may expose CA secret or host private-key material during execution, or CA secret material left afterward. |
| FI-2026-015 | Users can add CRL URLs through BCC, WSI REST/SOAP, or cacrl. |
Fortra’s October 1, 2026 advisory describes command substitution processed by crlserver as root on the Master. It rates CVE-2026-79898 CVSS 3.1 9.1. |
| FI-2026-012 | BoKS keytab management generates Active Directory service-account passwords. | Fortra’s October 1, 2026 advisory describes predictable generated passwords. It says deployments not using keytab management and deployments using administrator-supplied initial passwords are not affected by the described code path. CVE-2026-79901 is rated CVSS 3.1 9.9. |
| FI-2026-016 | The BoKS network interface running boks_portmux is exposed to TLS ClientHello traffic. |
Fortra’s October 1, 2026 advisory describes malformed input that can terminate the daemon; repeated requests may sustain an interruption despite automatic restart. CVE-2026-79896 is rated CVSS 3.1 7.5. |
| FI-2026-018 | The Server Agent adjoin utility performs Active Directory joins or password renewals. |
Fortra’s October 1, 2026 advisory describes weakly predictable machine-account passwords. CVE-2026-9864 is rated CVSS 3.1 4.8. |
These CVSS figures are severity scores published by Fortra in 2026, not probabilities that an attack will occur. Review the other October advisories in the FI-2026-012–FI-2026-019 set against your deployed features as well; the available descriptions do not support a complete affected-version matrix.

3. Apply the vendor-documented restrictions first
Restrict access to autoregistration
For CVE-2026-9862, Fortra’s FI-2026-007 advisory says to restrict network access to boks_autoregisterd, which listens on port 6507 by default, until fixed builds are deployed. Scope the restriction to the sources that genuinely need the service and verify that unapproved networks cannot reach it.
Fortra also documents disabling the service in the Master’s $BOKS_var/internal/boksinit/master configuration, then rereading the file or restarting BoKS as directed by the vendor. This prevents the service from respawning, but autoregistration will be unavailable until the service is restored. Follow Fortra’s procedure and your organization’s change-control process; do not apply unreviewed shell or configuration changes in production.

Limit legacy tar-client operations to trusted clients
For CVE-2026-9863, Fortra’s FI-2026-008 advisory says to run upgrade or patch operations for legacy tar-installed clients only against trusted clients. Do not perform those operations on a client that may be compromised or controlled by an untrusted party. Where trust cannot be established, defer the operation until fixed builds are available or the concern is resolved, and account for the resulting delay in your change plan.
4. Contain other October advisory paths cautiously
The following measures are temporary operational precautions, not vendor-verified fixes. The accessed October advisories did not state explicit workarounds for these paths. Validate the controls with Fortra and test for service or workflow effects before broad rollout.

| Exposure | Interim measure | What it does—and does not do |
|---|---|---|
| CRL URL changes (FI-2026-015) | Limit authority to add CRL URLs to a small, trusted administrator group; review recent CRL configuration changes. | Reduces who can invoke the described pathway. It does not fix command injection or prove other interfaces are unreachable. |
| Temporary certificate files (FI-2026-014) | Restrict local access to the BoKS Master and BOKS_tmp; avoid unnecessary bccgethostcert invocations; review and remove stale sensitive temporary files using an approved process. |
May reduce local access to exposed material. A third-party summary attributes similar precautions to the vendor, but the accessed primary advisory did not show an explicit workaround; confirm the measures with Fortra. |
| Active Directory service-account passwords (FI-2026-012) | Coordinate with Fortra and directory/security owners on the affected accounts and an account-specific mitigation and credential-rotation plan. | The advisory notes that a standard authenticated AD account can ordinarily request a service ticket for an affected SPN. Lack of BoKS or host administrator credentials alone is not a reason to dismiss the risk. The advisory does not prescribe a specific rotation procedure. |
Malformed TLS input to boks_portmux (FI-2026-016) |
Where operationally possible, limit relevant BoKS network interfaces to necessary trusted networks and monitor for repeated service interruptions. | These are general containment steps, not a vendor-published workaround; automatic restart does not prevent repeated requests from sustaining disruption. |
Server Agent adjoin password generation (FI-2026-018) |
Ask Fortra to confirm the applicable fixed build and have the directory team assess affected machine accounts and recent join or renewal operations. | The accessed advisory did not specify a workaround. Do not treat this assessment as proof that the password-generation issue is fixed. |
5. Record impact, ownership, and residual risk
For each interim control, record the affected assets, implementation time, accountable owner, approval or change record, operational side effects, and planned patch window. Note what remains exposed and how the control will be checked. For example, disabling autoregistration means new autoregistration activity will not be available until the service is restored; restricting access instead may preserve it for approved sources if the rule is correctly scoped.
While the vulnerable components remain in place, monitor authentication, privileged changes, Master availability, and unexpected behavior. Set an owner and review date for each control so a temporary restriction is not silently mistaken for a permanent fix.

6. Plan the applicable upgrade and verify it
Fortra’s October 2, 2026 release notes list Server s-9.0.0.7 fixes that include cryptographic randomness for Active Directory service-account passwords, protection of temporary CA secrets and host credentials, prevention of CRL command injection, a malformed TLS ClientHello crash, and an autoregistration proxy buffer overflow. That list is not a complete 8.1 server fix matrix for all October advisories, and it does not establish that s-9.0.0.7 fixes every issue in every deployment. Confirm the fixed release for your actual branch, component, and advisory with Fortra before treating a build as fully fixed.
Check component compatibility before scheduling the upgrade. Fortra warns against combining Server s-9.0.0.7 with Client c-9.0.0.6 for Entra ID authentication: authentication may fail or use another permitted authentication method. The release notes say to wait for Client c-9.0.0.7 or upgrade server and client together.
Quick Recap
- Confirm with current Fortra package notes or support which fixed versions cover each applicable advisory and your server/client combination.
- Schedule the upgrade through normal change control, including any required client, Replica, Server Agent, and integration updates.
- After installation, verify package versions on the affected components and test the relevant workflows, including authentication and integrations such as Entra ID where used.
- Remove temporary restrictions only when the fixed components are installed, their coverage is confirmed, and the service owner approves restoration.
