To reduce reflections on a phone screen, first raise brightness or enable adaptive brightness if the display looks too dim outdoors. If you can still see a sharp mirror-like image of your surroundings, a compatible matte anti-glare protector may help by scattering that reflection. Brightness changes the light coming from the screen; it does not remove the reflected image.
First identify what is making the screen hard to see
There are two related but different problems: the display may not be bright enough for the surroundings, or the screen may show a distinct reflection of the sky, a window or your face. You may have both at once.
- The image looks washed out or dim: try the phone’s brightness controls.
- You can see a sharp reflected image: settings alone will not diffuse it; consider a matte anti-glare protector if it remains bothersome.
Try brightness settings before buying anything
Brightness controls increase the display’s emitted light, which can make content easier to see in bright surroundings. Adaptive brightness adjusts the level based on ambient light, though the available controls and names vary by device.
Google Pixel
Google’s Pixel display settings guidance covers brightness and adaptive brightness. Google says Pixel 4 and later may temporarily go above their normal maximum brightness in extremely bright ambient conditions, such as direct sunlight. This is device-specific behavior, not a setting available on every phone.

Motorola
On the moto g35 5G, Motorola documents an Extra brightness option alongside adaptive brightness in its screen-brightness instructions. Motorola warns that extra brightness uses a lot of battery and may cause eye strain in darker surroundings. Turn it off when you no longer need it.
Other phones
Look in your phone’s display settings for brightness or adaptive brightness. Some models offer additional sunlight or high-brightness modes, but names and availability differ; do not assume a feature is present unless it appears in your device’s settings or documentation.

When a matte anti-glare protector can help
A matte protector changes how light reflects from the screen surface. 3M describes anti-glare film as scattering incident reflected light in many directions; its technical sheet says the matte front surface diffuses mirror-like reflections. In practical terms, this can make a distinct reflection less sharp, rather than making it disappear.
This mechanism is supported by 3M’s display-material documentation, including its Anti-Glare Filter technical data. That industrial-film description does not establish the performance or image quality of every phone protector. A matte surface changes the way light is scattered, so do not expect every protector to preserve the same appearance as a bare screen.

Anti-glare and anti-reflection are not the same
“Anti-glare” usually refers to scattering reflections across a wider range of directions with a matte surface. “Anti-reflection” describes a different optical approach: reducing the intensity of reflected light using optical layers or interference effects. 3M explains this distinction in its Display Optics 101 glossary.
These terms are not interchangeable, and the distinction alone does not confirm that a product will fit or work well with a particular phone. The cited material does not verify a specific phone-compatible anti-reflection film.

Choose a protector for the exact phone model
Before buying, match the protector to the phone’s exact model, not just its brand or screen size. Also check whether it works with features you use, such as touch input or an under-display fingerprint reader. No single protector is established as suitable for every handset.
For supported Pixel phones, Google documents a screen-protector mode that can increase touch sensitivity in the same display settings guidance. Other phones may handle protector-related touch settings differently, so check the manufacturer’s instructions for your model.

Account for heat and battery limits
A brightness slider cannot always guarantee sustained maximum output. Apple says an iPhone or iPad display may dim when the device gets too warm, with maximum brightness reduced until it cools. See Apple’s brightness and colour-temperature guidance.
Extra brightness can also use more battery, as Motorola notes for its moto g35 5G. Use a high-brightness mode only while conditions call for it, and reduce brightness when you move somewhere darker.

A practical order of operations
- Check the problem: decide whether the image is too dim, a sharp reflection is distracting, or both.
- For a dim image, adjust brightness: open the phone’s display settings and try brightness or adaptive brightness. Use any extra-brightness mode only if your model provides one.
- For a persistent sharp reflection, consider a matte protector: choose one made for your exact phone and verify feature compatibility.
- Reassess in the conditions where you use the phone: if a high-brightness mode drains battery or becomes uncomfortable indoors, switch it off.
