To use less mobile data uploading a recorded MP4 to YouTube, re-export it with H.264 video at a lower bitrate; if it is still too large, reduce the resolution, such as from 1080p to 720p. Keep the frame rate the same as the original recording. YouTube’s SDR reference bitrates for standard frame rates are 8 Mbps at 1080p and 5 Mbps at 720p. On Android, allow mobile uploads in YouTube’s settings before starting.
Reduce the file before uploading
MP4 is a container, not a video codec. For an upload intended for YouTube, export the MP4 with H.264 video. YouTube Help says to use H.264 to compress a video file while maintaining quality for YouTube, but the result depends on the source and export settings.
- Check the source. Note its duration, resolution and frame rate. Use the original recording frame rate in your export rather than lowering it as a routine way to save space; YouTube recommends encoding and uploading at the rate at which the content was recorded.
- Choose an H.264 MP4 export. Start with YouTube’s recommended bitrate for the resolution and frame-rate class you intend to upload. These are SDR reference settings, not a guarantee of a particular file size or image quality.
- Lower the bitrate if the file is too large. A lower bitrate means less video data, with a potential loss of visible detail. Compare settings at the same resolution and frame-rate class.
- Lower resolution if you need a larger reduction. For example, export at 720p instead of 1080p if you can accept a smaller image and reduced detail.
- Keep audio changes in perspective. YouTube lists AAC-LC as a supported audio option and recommends 384 kbps for stereo. Audio settings can affect size, but video bitrate is usually the larger factor in a typical video file.
YouTube’s upload recommendations are listed in its recommended upload encoding settings.
Reference bitrates for SDR exports
| Resolution | Standard frame rates | High frame rates |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p | 8 Mbps | 12 Mbps |
| 720p | 5 Mbps | 7.5 Mbps |
| 480p | 2.5 Mbps | 4 Mbps |
The standard- and high-frame-rate figures are separate recommendations; do not treat them as interchangeable. YouTube’s page also distinguishes SDR and HDR, so consult its table if you are exporting HDR rather than applying these SDR figures.

Estimate how much data the upload will use
As a rough estimate, multiply the video bitrate by the duration to get the video-data volume. For example, an hour at 8 Mbps represents about 3.6 GB of video data before accounting for audio and encoding behavior. This is an estimate, not a promise of the final file size or the amount an Indian mobile operator will bill. Actual size varies with duration, audio, bitrate and encoder behavior.
Use the exported file’s displayed size to judge whether it fits your available data allowance, and leave some headroom rather than assuming the carrier will bill exactly that size. YouTube’s maximum upload limit is 256 GB or 12 hours, whichever is less; that is a platform limit, not a recommended target size. See YouTube’s guidance for uploading videos longer than 15 minutes.

Allow YouTube uploads over mobile data on Android
- Open the YouTube app and tap your profile picture.
- Go to Settings → General → Uploads.
- Choose the option that allows uploads over a mobile network.
- Start an upload and select the exported MP4 from your device.
YouTube’s Android instructions cover uploading videos and choosing a connection type. Upload over Wi-Fi instead if you want to avoid using mobile data. YouTube documents the setting, but it does not establish Indian carrier prices, data allowances or how a carrier counts upload traffic; check your own plan for those details.
If you mean a live broadcast, not an uploaded recording
The steps above are for an already recorded MP4 uploaded to YouTube. A live encoder sends a real-time feed and uses separate ingestion settings; the upload bitrate recommendations above are not a live-stream setup guide. For live broadcasts, use YouTube’s separate encoder settings, bitrates and resolutions.

If your goal is instead to keep a prerecorded video playing as a continuous YouTube live stream, StreamNeo is a separate cloud option: upload the video, add your YouTube stream key and go live. It is not a way to reduce the file size of an ordinary YouTube upload.
Troubleshoot a failed or interrupted upload
- The upload will not start on mobile data: check Settings → General → Uploads and confirm mobile-network uploads are allowed.
- YouTube reports an audio or video issue: check the export settings, correct them, then upload the corrected file again, as YouTube recommends in its upload troubleshooting guidance.
- The file remains too large for your allowance: reduce the bitrate at the same resolution first, or move down a resolution if you accept the quality tradeoff. Recheck the new file size before uploading.
- You do not want the upload to consume mobile data: switch the upload connection to Wi-Fi in YouTube’s Android upload settings.
Or let it run in the cloud
For a prerecorded video that you want to run continuously as a YouTube live stream, StreamNeo keeps it running from the cloud: upload your video, add your YouTube stream key and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home. Each slot streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot; StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. Learn more at StreamNeo, then start your free first day.
