Reduce an MP4 for a YouTube playlist by testing a quality-based H.264 encode on a short, representative sample before processing the full video. Keep the original frame rate and dimensions at first, inspect the smallest text at the size viewers will watch, and only lower quality or resolution if it remains readable. There is no universal bitrate or CRF setting that guarantees sharp text.
How do I reduce MP4 file size without making text blurry?
Use a repeatable test rather than applying one bitrate or quality value to every video. File size depends on video duration, image content, the encoder’s quality or bitrate target, and audio. A constant-quality encode therefore cannot promise an exact output size in advance.
- Keep an untouched source. Record its dimensions, frame rate, aspect ratio, audio tracks, and file size. This gives you a reference if an encode looks worse or produces an unexpected result.
- Start with H.264 in an MP4 container. YouTube recommends MP4 and H.264 for uploads, and recommends encoding at the same frame rate as the recording. Initially retain the source frame dimensions and frame rate rather than shrinking them.
- Choose a quality-based encode. In FFmpeg with libx264, use CRF; in HandBrake, use its constant-quality/RF control. These settings let the encoder vary bitrate to pursue a quality target. A slower preset can improve compression efficiency but takes longer to encode; preset speed is not a direct image-quality guarantee. See the FFmpeg libx264 documentation and HandBrake’s video quality guide.
- Make a representative short test. Include the smallest text, gradients, and motion in the source. Export a few quality settings and compare text edges and moving sections both at full size and at the playback size your viewers are likely to use.
- Change one thing at a time. If the test looks clear, try a lower quality setting to reduce the file. If you must reduce dimensions, test one downscaling step at a time. Stop when text edges become difficult to read or motion shows distracting artifacts.
- Check YouTube’s processed result. Upload the passing sample and inspect the transcoded video at the intended playback size before encoding an entire playlist. YouTube’s upload recommendations do not guarantee that every fine detail will remain unchanged after processing.
- Batch encode only after the test passes. Apply the verified settings to the remaining videos, while keeping each source frame rate and aspect ratio unless a specific test shows that a change is acceptable.
YouTube’s guidance emphasizes frame rate, aspect ratio, and resolution rather than bitrate, and generally advises providing the highest resolution available. Its player adapts to each video’s dimensions and aspect ratio, so do not bake black bars or padding into the video pixels. Read YouTube’s upload encoding settings and video resolution and aspect-ratio guidance.
What bitrate should I use for YouTube?
YouTube’s published figures below are recommended SDR upload bitrates, not a guarantee of text sharpness. The frame-rate classes are standard (24, 25, or 30 fps) and high (48, 50, or 60 fps). These recommendations were listed in YouTube Help’s current upload encoding guidance accessed in 2026.

| Resolution | Standard frame rate | High frame rate |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p SDR | 8 Mbps | 12 Mbps |
| 720p SDR | 5 Mbps | 7.5 Mbps |
These are useful upload reference points if you use average bitrate, but do not treat them as a minimum needed for readable text or as a promise about YouTube’s transcoded output. The official advice says to optimize for frame rate, aspect ratio, and resolution rather than bitrate. For text-heavy video, test the actual material and playback size.
Quality-based encoding or a fixed file-size target?
Choose the control that matches your priority. Quality-based encoding is usually the better starting point when visual consistency matters; an average-bitrate or size-target workflow is useful when you have a firm storage or upload budget, but the visual quality can vary from one clip to another.

| Approach | What it prioritizes | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| CRF in FFmpeg or constant quality/RF in HandBrake | A chosen quality target, with bitrate and resulting size allowed to vary | Final size is not predictable exactly; values do not transfer directly between encoders |
| Average bitrate or size target | A more predictable bitrate or file-size budget | Quality can vary with image content and motion; a target size does not ensure small text remains clear |
Neither FFmpeg nor HandBrake establishes one universal CRF/RF number for small text. Make a sample for each materially different kind of footage rather than copying a quality value from another encoder or video.
Should I reduce the resolution?
Not as the first step for text-heavy footage. Smaller dimensions can reduce file size, but they also leave fewer pixels to draw letter edges and fine interface details. Keep the original dimensions initially, then test a single downscaling step only if the full-size encode is still too large. Judge readability at the actual playback size, not only by zooming in on a paused frame.

YouTube says its player adapts to each individual video’s dimensions and recommends providing the highest resolution available. Preserve the original aspect ratio and avoid adding bars or padding to the encoded picture; the player can adapt to the video’s aspect ratio.
What the recommendations do—and do not—tell you
- YouTube recommends H.264 in MP4 for uploads and matching the recorded frame rate.
- The listed bitrates are upload recommendations. They are not a text-legibility threshold or a measured guarantee about post-upload sharpness.
- YouTube does not publish a universal CRF/RF value, minimum font size, or numeric text-sharpness threshold for this use case.
- The encoding workflow applies to each video uploaded for a playlist; no special playlist-specific compression behavior is established by the guidance cited here.
Common problems and fixes
- Text looks soft after encoding: Return to the original dimensions and compare a higher-quality test. Check the smallest type at normal playback size before trying any downscaling.
- The file is smaller, but motion looks worse: Raise the quality target and make another sample, or avoid reducing dimensions. Fast-changing scenes may need more data than static screens.
- The encoded file is not the size you expected: That is normal for constant-quality encoding; content and duration affect the result. If the size limit is firm, use average bitrate or a size target and evaluate visual quality separately.
- The uploaded version looks different from the local file: YouTube processes uploads. Inspect the processed sample at the target playback size before applying settings to every playlist video.
- Bars appear around the video: Check whether bars were included in the encoded pixels. YouTube’s player adapts to video dimensions; avoid adding padding as part of the encode.
