If you mean the bitrate for a live YouTube encoder instead, use YouTube’s live-stream recommendations for your resolution, frame rate, and codec; upload compression settings and live settings are not interchangeable.
First decide whether you are shrinking a file or configuring a live stream
A prerecorded MP4 is reduced by encoding it again, usually with a more efficient bitrate or quality target. A live encoder produces a continuous feed, so you configure its resolution, frame rate, codec, bitrate, and keyframe interval instead. A smaller file does not automatically mean a better live-stream configuration.
For a Hindi bhajan, the right compression setting depends on the source file, how much quality loss you will accept, and whether vocals and instruments remain clear. YouTube’s published bitrate recommendations are technical guidance, not results from a Hindi-bhajan-specific test.
How to reduce a prerecorded MP4
1. Keep an untouched original and inspect the source
Make a copy before encoding. Note the video resolution, frame rate, audio codec and bitrate, and duration. These details help you judge whether the output is genuinely smaller and whether a change has damaged the parts that matter, such as fine text, devotional artwork, or vocal and instrumental detail.

Do not lower the frame rate simply to cut file size. YouTube says, “Content should be encoded and uploaded in the same frame rate it was recorded.” See YouTube’s recommended upload encoding settings.
2. Choose a quality target, then test a short section
FFmpeg’s libx264 encoder supports CRF, a quality-based control: the encoder varies bitrate to aim for the selected quality, so final file size depends on the content. The CRF value in the example below is only a starting example, not a guaranteed setting for a Hindi bhajan. A slower preset can take longer to encode and may improve compression efficiency; it does not guarantee a particular size or quality outcome.
Encode a representative short section first. Watch it at the size viewers are likely to use and listen on headphones or speakers for vocal harshness, muddy instruments, or other audible damage. Change one setting at a time, then compare the file size and quality with the original. This sampling-and-adjusting process is practical guidance, not a reported test result.
3. Encode an H.264 MP4 with FFmpeg
For an H.264 re-encode with a quality-based target, this command is an illustrative template:

ffmpeg -i input.mp4 -c:v libx264 -preset slow -crf 23 -c:a aac -b:a 192k -movflags +faststart output.mp4
Replace input.mp4 and output.mp4 with your file names. Adjust CRF and audio settings based on the short sample and the quality you need. If the original audio is already suitable, avoid re-encoding it unnecessarily where your workflow permits copying the audio stream instead. Re-encoding audio can change its quality.
YouTube’s upload guidance recommends MP4 and H.264 video, with AAC-LC among its audio options. Its undated help guidance lists SDR upload bitrate references of 8 Mbps for 1080p, 5 Mbps for 720p, and 2.5 Mbps for 480p at standard frame rates. These are upload references, not bhajan-specific optima, and they are not live-stream bitrates. See YouTube’s upload recommendations and FFmpeg documentation.
4. Check the output before uploading
- Confirm the output plays from beginning to end and the picture has no unexpected stutter or visible encoding damage.
- Listen for changes to vocals, instruments, and any spoken introductions.
- Compare its actual file size with the original; CRF does not promise a specific size.
- Keep the original until you are satisfied with the encoded copy.
What fast start does—and does not do
The command uses -movflags +faststart to move MP4 playback metadata toward the beginning of the file. FFmpeg says this can improve playback behavior; it does not improve the compression ratio or make the video itself smaller. YouTube also recommends placing the MP4 moov atom at the front for upload files. FFmpeg documents: “This data is usually written at the end of the file, but it can be moved to the start for better playback by adding +faststart to the -movflags, or using the qt-faststart tool.”
How to configure a live YouTube encoder
If your source is being sent live rather than uploaded as a finished MP4, choose the live settings from YouTube’s live encoding table. Match the row to the feed’s resolution, frame rate, and codec. The recommended bitrate differs by those choices, so do not substitute YouTube’s upload bitrate figures for live values.

- Choose the intended resolution, frame rate, and codec in your encoder.
- Look up the matching combination in YouTube’s live encoder settings and set the bitrate accordingly.
- For RTMP/RTMPS, configure constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval, as YouTube recommends.
- Check that your available upload connection can sustain the selected feed; a connection that cannot keep up can undermine a stable stream.
The live table is the place to choose a live bitrate; the upload table applies to prerecorded uploads. The exact suitable live settings depend on the resolution, frame rate, and codec you intend to send.
Copyright and YouTube policy checks for a bhajan stream
Before streaming or uploading, confirm that you have the necessary rights to the recording and every included element, including the performance, backing track, artwork, and any video footage. A devotional song’s traditional lyrics do not by themselves establish that a particular recording or arrangement is free to use. YouTube’s copyright and monetization decisions depend on the material and rights involved; compression settings do not change those rights.
For a recurring or continuous stream, also review YouTube’s current live-stream and monetization policies before relying on the content for channel eligibility. Reusing material you did not create or have permission to use can raise copyright or reused-content concerns. A smaller MP4 or a live encoder setting cannot resolve them.
Or let it run in the cloud
If the goal is to keep prerecorded bhajans live on YouTube around the clock, StreamNeo can loop uploaded videos from the cloud: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. Each slot streams what you upload at its original quality, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is a YouTube-only cloud service, not a camera-based live production tool. Troubleshooting common problems
The output file is not much smaller
CRF encoding is content-dependent. Test a higher CRF value on a short section if you can accept more quality loss, or consider a lower resolution only if it suits the intended viewing experience. Compare both picture and sound rather than relying on a number alone.
The video looks soft, blocky, or flickers
Return to the untouched original and test a lower CRF value, which asks the encoder for higher quality, or use a slower preset if longer encoding time is acceptable. Check the result at the intended playback size before replacing the file.
The bhajan sounds worse after encoding
Compare the output audio with the original. If the source audio was already suitable, try a workflow that copies it rather than re-encoding it, where possible. If audio must be encoded, test settings on a short sample and listen carefully before processing the full recording.
The MP4 does not begin playback quickly over a network
Use -movflags +faststart when encoding the MP4 to place playback metadata at the start. This affects playback behavior, not file size.
The live stream buffers or fails to stay stable
Verify that the encoder’s resolution, frame rate, codec, and bitrate correspond to the same row in YouTube’s live recommendations. Check whether the connection can sustain that feed, and use CBR with a two-second keyframe interval for RTMP/RTMPS.
