To keep bulk screenshot jobs from exhausting memory, limit how many pages run at once, capture only the viewport or element you need, write each result promptly, and close page or context resources after every job. Use a fixed-size worker pool and tune its size against your own pages: Playwright does not publish a universal safe worker count or memory-saving percentage.
Why bulk screenshot jobs run out of memory
Thousands of URLs do not have to mean thousands of open browser pages. Memory pressure grows when a job starts work for the whole URL list at once, holds completed image data in memory, or captures very tall pages unnecessarily. Page memory demands also vary by site and page; the Playwright Page API warns that “Browser pages might crash if they try to allocate too much memory.”
The guidance below is based on Playwright’s documented screenshot options and page lifecycle. Applying a fixed worker pool and choosing a recycling boundary are operational recommendations, not Playwright guarantees. The documentation does not specify a general memory ceiling, safe parallelism, or recycling interval.
Use a fixed-size worker pool
Read URLs incrementally from a queue and let only a small, fixed number of workers process them. Each worker should navigate, wait for the content state your capture requires, save the screenshot, record the outcome, and close its page or context before taking another job. This prevents the amount of active browser work from growing with the size of the URL list.

Keep retries in the same bounded queue. Creating an unbounded replacement page for every failure can defeat the worker limit precisely when a site is slow or resource-heavy. Start with low concurrency, then increase it only while measured memory, throughput, and failure rates remain acceptable.
Capture only the image area you need
Viewport screenshots
If the visible browser area answers the task, use a viewport screenshot. It avoids requesting an image of the entire scrollable document. This is often the practical default for page checks, though the actual memory effect depends on the page and workload.

Element screenshots
When you need just a chart, product card, or other component, capture that element rather than the full document. Playwright supports screenshots of a specific element.
Full-page screenshots
Use full-page capture only when the entire document is required. A long page can produce a much taller image than a viewport capture, so include very long pages in testing before settling on concurrency. Playwright documents the available scope options but does not quantify their memory savings.

Save results promptly and release resources
Playwright can save a screenshot to a path or return screenshot bytes in a buffer. For large batches, write each result directly to its destination—such as a file or object storage—instead of retaining many buffers or base64-expanded copies in the queue process. If later processing requires an in-memory buffer, process it promptly, persist the result, and drop references when finished.
Close each page or context in a finally-style cleanup path, including when navigation or capture fails. Keep deterministic output names so retries can be identified or safely handled. If memory continues to rise across completed jobs despite cleanup, measure where references remain and consider restarting a worker at a batch boundary chosen from observed behavior. The Playwright documentation gives no universal interval for doing so.

Measure before increasing concurrency
- Choose a representative URL mix, including long pages and pages that are slow or prone to failure.
- Run a small number of workers and record peak resident memory, throughput, timeout and crash rates, and output sizes.
- Increase the worker count gradually, changing one factor at a time. Stop increasing when memory approaches your process or host limit, or when failures rise enough to undermine throughput.
- Repeat with the capture scope and output method you intend to use in production. A viewport-only run may not predict full-page behavior.
- Keep monitoring after deployment; a different URL mix can change both memory use and failure patterns.
There is no evidence-based worker count or memory-saving percentage that applies to every workload. Treat the right limit as a measured property of your browser version, host, page mix, and capture options.
Troubleshoot memory and capture failures
- Memory climbs as the queue grows: Check that the program is not creating a page per URL or keeping completed buffers in a queue. Enforce a fixed worker limit and persist results promptly.
- Pages crash under load: Reduce concurrent browser work and inspect whether full-page captures or unusually large pages are involved. Record the failing URL and outcome rather than launching uncontrolled retries.
- Memory rises even after jobs finish: Verify that every success and error path closes the page or context and releases image references. If cleanup does not stabilize memory, test a measured worker-restart boundary and investigate retained references or unusually large pages.
- Captures time out or fail intermittently: Keep retries bounded by the same queue limit. Track failures separately from successful captures so retries do not silently increase active work.
- Output files are unexpectedly large: Confirm whether full-page capture is necessary, and use viewport or element capture when that meets the requirement.
