Measure Node.js and Chrome processes separately in the environment where the job runs; Puppeteer’s documentation does not specify a universally safe page count or a guaranteed memory reduction.
Why page lifecycle and concurrency matter
Each open page belongs to a browser context, and leaving completed pages open means the batch continues carrying pages it no longer needs. Unbounded concurrency can also create a large simultaneous workload. A practical approach is to cap active work, release each page after its screenshot, and finish by closing the browser.
Choose the concurrency limit by measuring representative pages in your deployment environment. Page content varies: large images, long documents, animations, and heavy scripts can change the workload. There is no documented concurrency number that is safe for every site or machine.
Use a bounded worker pool and close every page
This example assumes your application provides runWithConcurrency and outputPathFor. They are not Puppeteer APIs; implement them to suit your queue and output naming requirements. Install Puppeteer in your Node.js project before running the code.

}Replace concurrency with a measured limit rather than assuming a particular value. A worker pool should ensure that no more than that many URL tasks are active at once. The Puppeteer screenshot guide shows saving a screenshot to a path and closing the browser after capture; the Page API documents page closure and coordination with screenshots in progress.
Why cleanup belongs in finally
If navigation or screenshot capture throws, code after the failed operation may never run. Putting page.close() in finally ensures the page is closed on success or failure. The outer finally similarly ensures that the browser is closed if the batch fails.
Handle failures and output names deliberately
- Decide whether a navigation timeout or failed load should stop the whole batch or be recorded as a per-URL failure while other tasks continue.
- Use unique output paths. URLs can collide after filename sanitization, and retries can overwrite existing files unless your naming policy accounts for them.
- Expect partial output if a batch stops midway. Record which URLs succeeded so you can retry only the remainder if that suits your workflow.
The exact timeout policy and retry behavior depend on the application; do not let retries create more simultaneous pages than the concurrency limit allows.

Choose page, context, and browser cleanup intentionally
For independent captures, closing each page gives fine-grained cleanup while the browser remains available for subsequent work. A browser context is a grouping and isolation choice: pages in the same context share that context’s cookies and local storage. Closing a context closes all its pages, which can be useful when a group of captures should share state and then be discarded together.

Do not use browser.disconnect() as a substitute: disconnecting detaches Puppeteer but leaves the browser and its pages open. The Puppeteer browser management guide describes these behaviors; check it against the Puppeteer version installed in your project because the guide is marked Next.
The Page API also notes that BrowserContext.newPage(), Browser.newPage(), and Page.close() wait for screenshots in progress in the same context. Avoid assuming that concurrent page creation, capture, and closure calls are entirely independent.

Keep screenshot output from accumulating in Node.js
Saving with page.screenshot({ path: ... }) writes the output to a file instead of requiring your application to retain the returned image buffer. This can help avoid unnecessary application-side retention when processing many results, but Puppeteer’s guide does not quantify a memory saving. If you need buffers for an upload or transformation, process and release them promptly rather than keeping every screenshot in an array.
When only one element is needed, Puppeteer supports ElementHandle.screenshot(). Capturing a specific element can fit a narrower output requirement, but it does not eliminate the need to close the page or bound concurrent work.
Measure memory and processes in the real deployment
- Track resident memory for the Node.js process and Chrome child processes separately. Also record active page count, completed URL count, and failures.
- Run a baseline with one active page, then compare it with the concurrency you intend to use. Use representative pages, including heavier content that occurs in production.
- Repeat measurements over a batch long enough to see whether resource use levels off or continues rising. Compare runs with the same URLs and settings where possible.
- If investigating retained JavaScript objects, call
page.captureHeapSnapshot()to capture a JavaScript heap snapshot. It does not measure all Chrome native allocations or total browser-process memory.
These are practical measurement steps, not a Puppeteer-provided memory metric or a benchmark result. Use the process and container limits that apply to your actual deployment when deciding whether the chosen concurrency is acceptable.

Troubleshoot rising memory or lingering Chrome processes
Memory keeps rising as URLs finish
- Check that every task reaches its page-cleanup block, including navigation and screenshot error paths.
- Confirm the worker pool caps active tasks and that retries do not bypass the cap.
- Check whether the application retains returned screenshot buffers, page references, or other results after processing.
- Compare Node and Chrome process memory separately; a JavaScript heap snapshot alone cannot explain all browser memory use.
Chrome processes remain after the batch
Confirm that the code reaches browser.close() and that the browser instance was not merely disconnected. In containers, Puppeteer’s troubleshooting guide notes that zombie Chrome processes can occur with some PID 1 setups and suggests considering dumb-init. This is a process-supervision issue to investigate, not a general memory optimization.
Pages appear to interfere during concurrent work
Review whether captures share a browser context and whether they rely on cookies or local storage. Also account for Puppeteer’s documented coordination around screenshots and page creation or closure in a context; do not build logic that assumes those operations always proceed independently.

Does closing a Puppeteer page wait for an active screenshot to finish?
The current Puppeteer Page API documents coordination that makes Page.close() wait for screenshots in progress in that context.
Does a JavaScript heap snapshot show all Chrome memory?
No. page.captureHeapSnapshot() captures the JavaScript heap; it is not a measurement of all browser or native allocations.
