For the quickest improvement, set the TV or monitor to its Game Mode or low-latency preset, connect the console or PC directly with a suitable HDMI cable, select the highest refresh rate that remains stable, turn on VRR and ALLM when both devices support them, and test the controller separately. Then rerun the rhythm game’s audio/video calibration. These changes reduce avoidable delay, but calibration only compensates for a remaining offset; it cannot remove processing time.

There is no authoritative, universal millisecond target that makes a rhythm game “lag-free.” Every display has its own hardware-defined latency, so the useful goal is to remove unnecessary processing and identify which link in your setup is adding delay.

Where rhythm-game latency comes from

What players call input lag is the total time between an action and the game showing or sounding the result. In a rhythm game, that delay can make a note appear late, make a hit sound miss the beat, or force an inaccurate timing offset. The delay is usually a combination of several links rather than one setting.

Display processing

Televisions often process each frame for motion smoothing, noise reduction, contrast enhancement, upscaling, interpolation, or cinema presentation. Intel explains that Game Mode can minimize input lag by bypassing video-signal processing. A monitor can also have a low-latency preset, although the controls and the amount of processing vary by model.

Frame delivery and refresh

Refresh rate determines how often the display can show a new frame. A higher refresh rate shortens the interval between frames, reducing the time an input may wait for the next visible update. It does not, however, change the display’s built-in processing latency. Intel notes that every TV and monitor has a unique, hardware-defined input latency.

Wireless video links

Intel states that “Wireless displays introduce more latency than wired ones, especially at high resolution display settings.” Wireless casting, remote-display modes, and other radio video paths therefore add a variable that is best removed while diagnosing timing problems.

Controller communication

The controller can be the slowest part of an otherwise fast chain. Bluetooth, a congested wireless environment, a low battery, or a receiver placed behind a metal cabinet can add inconsistent delay. Epic’s controller troubleshooting guidance identifies 2.4 GHz connections as more stable and lower latency than some alternatives. A wired USB comparison is the most direct way to test whether the controller is involved.

The setup sequence that removes the most delay

Change one variable at a time and write down the original settings. That makes it possible to tell which change helped instead of guessing after several settings move together.

  1. Enable Game Mode or the low-latency preset. On a Sony TV, the relevant control may appear as Content type = Game; other televisions use Picture mode = Game. Monitors commonly place the option under a gaming, response-time, or picture preset menu. Game Mode is intended to bypass processing rather than improve image quality.
  2. Turn off processing that remains active. If the menu exposes motion interpolation, motion clarity, noise reduction, film or cinema processing, or similar enhancements, disable them for the game input. Some sets automatically disable these controls in Game Mode; others leave individual options available.
  3. Connect the source directly. Run the console or PC straight to the TV or monitor. Temporarily bypass an AV receiver, HDMI switch, capture device, soundbar video pass-through, or wireless display adapter while testing. The cited evidence establishes the advantage of a wired display path, but it does not assign one fixed delay to every intermediary.
  4. Use the HDMI input documented for gaming features. TV manufacturers can reserve particular ports for high refresh, 4K bandwidth, or VRR. Amazon’s Fire TV guidance, for example, describes compatible models that provide 120 Hz or 144 Hz at 4K/UHD only on specified HDMI inputs. Check the label and the model’s manual rather than assuming every socket is equivalent.
  5. Enable the input’s enhanced-bandwidth option. A television may call this HDMI enhanced format, Input Signal Plus, or a similar name. Samsung documents HDMI 2.1 feature activation through input settings. Turn the option on only for the port and mode you are actually using; if the picture becomes unstable, return to the previous setting and test the cable and resolution.
  6. Select the highest stable refresh rate. On a PC, choose the intended rate in the operating system or GPU control panel. On a console, use the game’s performance or 120 Hz mode when the console, display, cable, and game all support it. A stable 120 Hz signal is preferable to an unstable mode that drops frames or repeatedly renegotiates the connection.
  7. Enable VRR and ALLM when both sides support them. Variable Refresh Rate synchronizes frame delivery with the display’s refresh behavior, which can reduce tearing and uneven motion. Auto Low Latency Mode allows a console or PC to request the display’s low-lag mode automatically. HDMI describes ALLM as a signal from a game source that causes the display to switch to a low-latency mode. These features require compatible source and display hardware; otherwise use a fixed mode the game handles reliably.
  8. Test the controller path. Play the same section with a USB cable, then with your normal wireless method. If a 2.4 GHz receiver is available, compare it with Bluetooth and place the receiver where it has a clear path to the controller. Keep the display settings unchanged during this test.
  9. Run the game’s timing calibration. After changing the display, HDMI mode, refresh rate, VRR/ALLM, or controller, rerun the game’s audio/video calibration. Enter the offset the game measures or requests. Calibration aligns judgments to a known residual offset; it does not make a slow display process frames faster.

How to verify the display and HDMI path

Confirm the actual signal

Do not rely on the console’s marketing label or the cable’s packaging alone. Open the TV or monitor information panel and verify the incoming resolution and refresh rate. On a PC, confirm the active output in the operating system or GPU panel, not just the game’s internal setting. A game may report a 120 Hz option while the desktop remains at 60 Hz, or the display may fall back to a lower mode after an HDMI handshake.

Understand HDMI 2.1 and 120 Hz

HDMI 2.1 is relevant when the target combination needs the bandwidth and features associated with it, such as 4K at 120 Hz, certain VRR implementations, or other high-bandwidth formats. It is not a general “latency switch.” A display’s processing time remains a separate hardware characteristic, and a lower-resolution 120 Hz mode may work through a port that cannot carry 4K at 120 Hz.

Use the port specified by the manufacturer and a cable certified for the required mode. An Ultra High Speed HDMI cable is appropriate when the source and display are both intended to run a 4K/120 Hz-class signal. It is unnecessary to buy that cable solely because a game is a rhythm game if your equipment is limited to a lower-bandwidth mode.

Look for mode conflicts

Some televisions leave Game Mode when you enable a special picture preset, HDR behavior, or a media-app input. Switch back to the physical HDMI input used by the console or PC and check the mode indicator while the game is running. If ALLM is active, the display may change modes as the source changes applications; verify that it returns to the expected low-latency state when the game starts.

VRR, ALLM, and fixed refresh: choosing a reliable mode

When VRR helps

VRR is useful when the game’s frame rate varies within the display’s supported range. By matching refresh behavior to delivered frames, it can reduce tearing and the uneven cadence that feels like timing instability. It does not guarantee a lower fixed processing latency, and it cannot correct a controller that sends delayed inputs.

  • Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft

When to disable VRR

Turn VRR off temporarily if the game shows flicker, repeated black screens, brightness changes, or inconsistent frame pacing. Test a fixed refresh mode at a frame rate the game sustains. If the fixed mode feels consistent and the VRR mode does not, the issue is compatibility or range behavior rather than a need for more calibration.

What ALLM does and does not do

ALLM automates the selection of the display’s low-latency mode; it does not create a low-latency mode in a display that lacks one. If the source or display does not support ALLM, select Game Mode manually. If the TV switches out of Game Mode during menus or streaming apps, that is expected behavior on some models and is separate from the game’s timing.

Display comparison

  1. Connect the same console or PC directly to the TV and play a repeatable section.
  2. Move the source to the monitor with the same cable where practical and select its low-latency preset.
  3. Compare consistency, not just apparent sharpness or size. A large TV in Game Mode may feel better than a monitor with a slower preset, while a monitor may offer a more predictable low-processing path.

This comparison cannot produce a universal winner because input latency is hardware-defined. Published measurements for the exact models are more useful than labels such as “gaming” or “fast.”

Controller comparison

  1. Connect the controller by USB and replay a section with dense, rapid inputs.
  2. Repeat over Bluetooth, then over 2.4 GHz if the controller supports it.
  3. Replace or recharge the battery, move the receiver away from USB 3.0 hubs and metal obstructions, and make sure no second device is paired.

If the wired test is consistently tighter while the screen chain is unchanged, the wireless link is contributing delay. If all connection methods feel identical, continue investigating the display and game settings.

TV versus monitor: the practical trade-offs

Area TV questions Monitor questions
Processing path Does Game Mode bypass motion, noise, and cinema processing? Are those controls disabled automatically? Is there a low-latency preset, and does the response-time control introduce overshoot or other artifacts?
Measured input latency What is the measured latency for the exact resolution and refresh mode you will use? What is the measured latency at the intended refresh rate, resolution, and VRR state?
Refresh and synchronization Which HDMI input supports the required refresh rate, VRR range, and ALLM behavior? What refresh rates and VRR range are supported through each input?
Connectivity Is enhanced HDMI bandwidth enabled on the correct port, and is the source connected directly? Does the selected input accept the console or PC’s target mode without a bandwidth fallback?
Use case Provides a larger image and shared viewing, but may expose more image-processing options to configure. Often offers a more consistent desktop-style low-processing path, with less screen area for group viewing.

The technical axes above are the useful basis for a purchase or setup decision. The available guidance does not establish that every monitor is faster than every TV.

Troubleshooting by symptom

Notes are late on every song

  • Check that Game Mode is active on the exact HDMI input in use.
  • Verify the incoming refresh rate and disable motion or cinema processing.
  • Connect the source directly and rerun calibration.

Timing is correct sometimes and wrong at other times

  • Watch for frame-rate drops or an unstable 120 Hz/VRR handshake.
  • Test a fixed refresh mode and compare it with VRR.
  • Try a wired controller connection to rule out wireless variability.

The picture cuts out after enabling 120 Hz

  • Move the source to the HDMI input documented for 120 Hz or 144 Hz.
  • Enable the TV’s enhanced HDMI format for that input.
  • Try a cable certified for the target bandwidth, then lower resolution or refresh rate to identify the failing combination.

The game feels delayed only with one controller

  • Compare USB, Bluetooth, and 2.4 GHz connections without changing display settings.
  • Charge or replace the battery and remove nearby wireless obstructions.
  • Calibrate again only after selecting the connection you intend to keep.

Calibration fixes one game but not another

Calibration offsets are game-specific. Different engines can schedule audio, video, and input differently, so store the offset for each title and rerun it after a display-mode or controller change.

A repeatable low-latency checklist

  • Game Mode or the monitor’s low-latency preset is active.
  • Motion, noise-reduction, cinema, and similar processing are disabled where the display permits.
  • The console or PC is connected directly by HDMI.
  • The source uses the HDMI input documented for high refresh or VRR.
  • The display reports the intended resolution and the highest stable refresh rate.
  • VRR is enabled only when both devices support it and the game behaves correctly.
  • ALLM is enabled when supported, or Game Mode is selected manually.
  • The controller has been compared over USB and its available wireless modes.
  • The game’s timing calibration was rerun after the final hardware settings were chosen.
  • Only one variable was changed between tests, with the result recorded.

What the evidence can and cannot tell you

Game Mode, a direct wired video path, an appropriate refresh rate, compatible VRR/ALLM settings, and a tested controller connection are defensible ways to remove avoidable delay. The guidance does not provide one acceptable latency number for all rhythm games, nor does it measure every TV, monitor, cable, receiver, or controller combination. Treat 120 Hz and 144 Hz as supported operating modes documented for particular products and inputs, not as latency measurements. For a final buying decision, seek a measurement for the exact display mode you will use and then calibrate the game to that setup.
