To reduce smoke particles, size the cleaner to the room, use compatible HVAC filtration if available, keep smoky outdoor air out, and ventilate when local air quality improves. Smoke particles and ozone are different pollutants: particle filters help with smoke, but the cited guidance does not establish that HEPA or MERV filters remove ozone.
Why wildfire smoke and ozone need different controls
Wildfire smoke contains particles and gases; ozone is a separate lung irritant. Air cleaners and HVAC filters used for smoke are primarily intended to reduce particles. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) says that at concentrations within public-health standards, ozone has little potential to remove indoor contaminants. Some ozone generators can produce concentrations that exceed health standards under certain operating conditions. Do not use an ozone generator as an air cleaner.
For a cleaner intended to reduce smoke particles, EPA recommends choosing a CARB-certified air cleaner because these devices produce little or no ozone. Certification addresses ozone emissions; it is not a claim that the device removes ozone already in the room.
What to do while outdoor air is smoky
- Check local conditions. Use AirNow or local, state, or Tribal air-quality information to track smoke and identify cleaner intervals.
- Keep smoke out. Keep windows and exterior doors closed while outdoor air is smoky. If your HVAC system has a fresh-air intake, close it or select recirculation if the controls allow it.
- Run compatible filtration. If you have central forced-air HVAC, use a snugly fitted MERV 13 filter, or the highest-rated filter the system can handle, and run the fan continuously if feasible. Check compatibility with the system manufacturer or an HVAC professional; a filter must fit and allow adequate airflow.
- Use a room air cleaner. Put a properly sized portable cleaner in the room where people spend the most time. Run it continuously at the highest fan setting people can comfortably tolerate, while leaving space around it for airflow. Check the filter frequently and replace it when it is dirty or begins to smell.
- Reduce indoor particle sources. Avoid smoking or vaping, candles and incense, aerosol sprays, fireplaces and wood stoves, and vacuuming without a HEPA-filter vacuum. Avoid high-heat or long-duration cooking on a stove or in an oven. Use a damp cloth or mop to remove settled dust.
- Set up a cleaner-air room. Choose a room that can be kept closed off from smoke and use the air cleaner there. Keep doors and windows closed during smoky conditions, but do not block emergency exits.
EPA identifies children, older adults, pregnant people, people with heart or lung disease, and people with greater smoke exposure as groups at increased risk from smoke effects. If someone in the household has heart or lung disease, plan for smoke events with their health-care provider.

How to choose a room air cleaner
Compare a cleaner’s tobacco-smoke clean air delivery rate (CADR) with the area of the room where it will run. EPA recommends a smoke CADR of at least two-thirds of the room area in square feet. For example, EPA’s guidance for a 120-square-foot room calls for a tobacco-smoke CADR of at least 80. These are sizing recommendations, not a guarantee of a particular exposure reduction. If the ceiling is taller than 8 feet, or smoke is frequently heavy, EPA advises choosing a cleaner rated for a larger room.
- Low ozone emissions: Check CARB’s certified-device list. Do not choose an ozone generator for smoke cleanup.
- Usable noise level: Compare noise at the fan setting you expect to use, since a unit that is too loud may be run less often or at a lower setting.
- Filter supply and cost: Check the price and availability of compatible replacement filters before buying, and follow the cleaner’s maintenance directions.
- Practical fit: Consider portability, available floor or table space, and energy use if the cleaner will run for long periods.
For central HVAC, compare MERV ratings only among filters the system can support. A higher rating is not automatically a better choice if the filter is incompatible or restricts airflow.

What if you do not have a commercial air cleaner?
EPA says a do-it-yourself box-fan-and-filter cleaner can be a temporary option for reducing particles when a commercial cleaner is unavailable or unaffordable. Current EPA guidance recommends a box fan made since 2012 and marked UL or ETL, paired with high-efficiency HVAC filters. Designs with multiple or thicker filters and a cardboard shroud can be more cost-effective. DIY performance varies, and these units may be louder than commercial cleaners; they are a particle-filtration option, not an ozone-removal method.
When to ventilate after smoke clears
Open windows or the HVAC fresh-air intake when outdoor air quality improves so cleaner outdoor air can replace indoor air. Check current local air-quality information rather than waiting a fixed number of hours: the cited guidance does not set a universal post-fire or post-smoke waiting period. EPA’s advice is to “Air out your home when air quality improves.”

What to do if the home gets too hot
Keeping smoke out is not an absolute rule if indoor heat makes the home unsafe. Use air conditioning or fans while limiting smoke entry where possible. If the home cannot be kept cool safely, EPA advises opening windows during a less smoky interval or seeking shelter elsewhere.
