To reduce an image’s file size online, resize it to the pixel dimensions you actually need, then choose a suitable format and compression level. Keep the original, compare the smaller result at its intended display size, and adjust if text, edges, gradients, or transparency look damaged. There is no single compression setting that works best for every image.
What to do first
- Keep an untouched original. Work on a copy so you can return to it if resizing, format conversion, or compression harms the image.
- Find the destination’s requirements. Check its maximum file size, accepted formats, and any recommended pixel dimensions. A smaller file that fails an upload limit or loses a needed feature is not a useful result.
- Resize to the dimensions needed. If the image will appear small, exporting it at much larger dimensions can store data the display does not need. Reducing pixel dimensions can reduce file size.
- Choose the format based on the image. Consider whether it is a photograph, contains fine text or line art, needs transparency, or is animated—and whether the destination accepts the format.
- Adjust compression and inspect. Compare the output size and appearance. Check it at the size people will see it, especially around fine detail and high-contrast edges.
These steps work with an online image editor or compression service that exposes the controls you need. The names and availability of specific controls vary by service; check its current instructions rather than assuming every tool behaves the same way.
Resize dimensions before chasing a compression percentage
Pixel dimensions describe how many pixels an image contains; file size describes how much storage its encoded data uses. They are related but not interchangeable. If a page, form, or message displays an image at a much smaller size than the original, reducing its dimensions to a suitable output size may be a more direct way to reduce the amount of data than repeatedly increasing compression.
Use the destination’s stated dimensions if it provides them. Otherwise, make a copy and reduce its dimensions only as far as the intended display allows. If a recipient may zoom in, or the image needs to remain useful for printing or later editing, avoid shrinking it to the dimensions of a small preview.

For websites, image optimization is part of choosing and delivering assets appropriately, not simply making every image as small as possible. web.dev’s guidance covers image optimization and delivery choices: Image performance.
Choose lossy or lossless compression
Lossy compression
Lossy compression reduces image accuracy to reduce file size. It is often a reasonable choice for detailed photographs, where small changes may be less obvious. But compression can introduce visible artifacts. They are more noticeable around sharp edges, text, and line art, so a setting that looks acceptable on a photograph may look poor on a diagram or screenshot. See web.dev’s image performance guidance.
Lossless compression
Lossless compression preserves the original image data, so it does not make the same image changes that lossy compression does. It may not shrink a file as much as a lossy option would; the result depends on the image and encoding. When exact image data matters, or lossy artifacts would be conspicuous, try lossless processing and compare the result.

How to set the level
If the service has a quality or compression slider, change it in small steps and preview each result. Do not treat a slider value as a universal target: different images respond differently, and services may use different controls. Choose the smallest file whose visible quality remains acceptable for the actual use. The guidance from web.dev recommends testing compression levels and judging the image rather than relying on one setting for everything.
Pick a format that fits the image and destination
| Format or need | What to consider | Practical choice |
|---|---|---|
| WebP | Supports lossy and lossless compression, transparency, and animation, according to Google for Developers and RFC 9649. | Consider it when the destination accepts WebP and its supported features match the image. |
| AVIF | MDN and web.dev describe newer formats such as AVIF as generally offering better compression than older formats; destination and browser support still matter. | Use it where the destination supports it; provide a fallback when compatibility requires one. |
| PNG or another format requiring transparency | Check whether transparency must be preserved. Converting formats can change or remove features the destination or workflow needs. | Keep a transparency-capable format when transparent areas are required, and verify the exported result. |
| Text, line art, or screenshots | Lossy artifacts can stand out around sharp edges and text. | Preview carefully; compare a lossless option or a less aggressive setting if details look damaged. |
WebP supports both lossy and lossless compression, alpha transparency, and animation. RFC 9649 describes it as “a image file format” but its exact standards wording is: “WebP is an image file format based on the Resource Interchange File Format (RIFF) [RIFF-spec] that supports lossless and lossy compression as well as alpha (transparency) and animation.” See the RFC Editor’s RFC 9649. Newer formats are not automatically accepted everywhere: check the upload form, publishing platform, or target browsers before converting. See MDN’s image format guide and web.dev’s format guidance.
Use an online compressor carefully
Online tools can make resizing and export convenient, but “online” does not establish how a particular service handles files. The available guidance identifies tools such as Squoosh, ImageOptim, and image optimization services as options; it does not establish each tool’s current online workflow, exact controls, upload handling, retention, price, or feature limits. Check the selected service’s current documentation and privacy terms before uploading a sensitive image. The format and privacy considerations are covered in web.dev’s format guide and image performance guidance.

If an image contains personal, confidential, or otherwise sensitive material, consider whether you are comfortable sending it to that service at all. Do not infer a privacy or retention policy from the fact that a tool accepts uploads.
Check the result before using it
- Text and thin lines: inspect small lettering, logos, diagrams, and screenshot text for blur or blocky edges.
- High-contrast edges: look for halos, ringing, or other visible artifacts where light and dark areas meet.
- Gradients and smooth tones: check for banding or uneven transitions.
- Transparency: confirm transparent areas remain transparent rather than turning into a solid background.
- Animation: verify the exported file still behaves as intended if animation is required.
- Real-world display: preview at the intended size, not only enlarged. A defect that is obvious when zoomed in may be invisible at the actual display size—or the reverse for fine text.
If the image looks worse than you can accept, return to the original and try fewer compression changes, a different format, or larger dimensions. Do not overwrite the only copy with a result you have not checked.

The file is still too large
Check that the output dimensions match the destination rather than the original. Then try another compression level and compare the result. If the destination has a strict maximum size, confirm the exported file—not the original—is the one being uploaded. A different supported format may also suit the image better.
The image looks blurry or has blocks around details
Those can be signs that lossy compression is too aggressive for the image. Return to the original, use a less aggressive setting, and inspect text and edges again. For line art or text-heavy images, compare a lossless option.

The converted file is rejected
Verify the upload destination’s accepted formats. A modern format may compress well but still be unsupported by a particular form or workflow. Export in a format the destination accepts, or use an appropriate fallback if you control how the image is delivered.
Transparency disappeared
Check whether the selected output format and export settings preserve transparency. Re-export from the original using a transparency-capable format, then preview the result against both light and dark backgrounds.
The online tool asks for an upload of a sensitive image
Pause and read that service’s current privacy and upload terms. The general image-format references cited here do not establish the terms for a particular service. If the policy does not answer your concern, do not upload the image there.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Which workflow should you use?
- For a photo headed to a website or upload form: resize to the required display dimensions, try a suitable lossy setting, and inspect it at that size.
- For text, a diagram, or sharp-edged artwork: be cautious with lossy compression; test a lossless option or a gentler setting and examine edges.
- For transparency or animation: choose a format and destination that preserve the required feature, then verify the exported file.
- For a sensitive image: check the specific service’s current privacy terms before uploading, or use a workflow whose handling you are comfortable with.
- For a screenshot of a live webpage: use a screenshot workflow; ScreenshotNeo is a capture API, not a compressor for existing files.
The right result is the smallest file that meets the destination’s requirements while keeping the image fit for its purpose. Format support and compression trade-offs are explained in MDN’s guide and web.dev’s guide.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I reduce an image’s file size without changing its dimensions?
Yes. Try a suitable compression method or format conversion while keeping the pixel dimensions unchanged, then compare the output and inspect it. How much smaller it gets depends on the image and encoding.
Does changing a file extension convert an image to another format?
No. Renaming a file does not itself re-encode its image data. Export or convert it with an image tool, and verify the resulting format and appearance.
