Use the quality or text-oriented refresh mode for reading, run a global refresh when after-images build up, and switch to web, aggressive or video modes only when motion speed matters. The B13 Pro’s color E Ink panel cannot update every pixel as quickly and cleanly as an LCD. Faster partial-refresh modes reduce latency but leave more residual imagery; a full refresh removes that residue and visibly flashes the screen black and white. That behavior is normal for this display technology, not by itself a sign of damage.

What ghosting and flashing mean on the B13 Pro

Ghosting is a faint remnant of an earlier page, window or frame that remains after new content appears. E Ink particles move through an electric field rather than emitting light continuously, and a partial update changes only the regions the controller considers necessary. A fast update therefore can leave a small amount of the previous state behind. On a color E Ink monitor, the effect is easiest to notice in dark text on a light background, high-contrast graphics, window edges and video.

Flashing is the visible sequence of black-and-white pulses used for a global (full) refresh. The controller drives the panel through a stronger, slower waveform so accumulated partial-update residue is cleared across the whole screen. You may see the image invert or blink for a moment. The B13 Pro’s advertised “up to 60 FPS” describes its fastest partial-refresh modes, not LCD-like instantaneous response or a guarantee of a clean 60-frame image.

Automatic ghosting management can alter refresh behavior as content changes, but it cannot eliminate the physical speed-versus-cleanliness trade-off of color E Ink. No published percentage reduction, response-time figure or laboratory ghosting score establishes a guaranteed amount of improvement for this model, so treat “zero ghosting” claims skeptically.

Choose the refresh mode for the job

The names shown by firmware can vary, but the B13 Pro’s controls follow four practical categories. Compare them by cleanliness, latency, color/detail fidelity and how often a flash is required.

Mode or category Best use What you gain What you give up
Normal or quality/text Books, documents, fine text, diagrams and screenshots Cleanest static image, stronger detail and fewer residual traces Scrolling and window movement feel slower
Web or faster partial Web pages, long scrolling and dragging windows Lower update latency and smoother movement More after-images and less reliable cleanup between changes
Aggressive/fast partial Short bursts of interaction when responsiveness is more important than appearance Fastest-feeling updates among ordinary desktop modes Most visible residue during repeated movement; detail can look less stable
Video Continuously changing video or animation Refresh behavior tuned for motion Highest ghosting risk; image quality and color consistency are compromises, so clear the panel more often

Start in normal or quality mode for reading and document work. If scrolling is uncomfortably slow, move to web or a faster partial mode for that activity. Return to the cleaner mode once the page is static. For video, keep expectations modest: video mode can make motion more usable, but it is also the mode most likely to accumulate traces.

How to clear ghosting with a full refresh

A global refresh is the reliable cleanup action when an old page remains visible. It is different from merely changing windows or waiting for an automatic partial update.

  1. Leave the monitor powered on and stop moving or scrolling the content.
  2. Short-press the B13 Pro’s power button. The monitor manual identifies this action as Global Refresh while powered on.
  3. If you use the remote, press its Full Refresh control instead.
  4. Keep your hands off the controls until the black-and-white flash sequence finishes and the new image settles.
  5. For static work, select the quality/text-oriented mode again before continuing.

The flash is an expected consequence of the clean redraw. It should not be interpreted as panel damage solely because it is conspicuous. Do not repeatedly trigger global refreshes every few seconds: the process is slower and more disruptive than a partial update, and frequent flashing defeats the reason to use a low-flicker E Ink monitor.

A practical workflow for reading, browsing and video

Books, PDFs and office documents

  1. Select normal or quality/text mode.
  2. Keep pages mostly static while reading; use the document viewer’s page-turn controls rather than continuous animated scrolling when possible.
  3. After opening a document that follows a long browsing session, perform one global refresh if any earlier page remains visible.
  4. Use a global refresh again only when residue is distracting, not as a timed ritual.

Web pages and long scrolling

  1. Switch to web or faster partial mode before a long scroll.
  2. Scroll in deliberate movements instead of dragging a window continuously across the desktop; constant motion gives the panel less opportunity to settle.
  3. When finished, stop on the page you want to read and switch back to normal/quality mode.
  4. Run a global refresh if text from earlier sections or another tab is still visible.

Dragging windows and interactive applications

Use a faster mode while moving windows, resizing panels or manipulating a canvas. Once the layout is positioned, wait for the current update to finish, switch to quality mode and refresh if edges or old window contents remain. This two-stage approach avoids accepting aggressive-mode artifacts during the static part of the task.

Video and animation

  1. Select video mode only for the playback session.
  2. Reduce expectations for fine detail and color stability; the mode prioritizes motion handling.
  3. Pause playback periodically if you need to inspect a still frame.
  4. After a long session, perform a global refresh, then return to quality/text mode for ordinary work.

Set up the source computer to avoid avoidable artifacts

Before judging the panel, remove output-side causes that can make contrast and color changes look like ghosting.

  • Use 3200×2400 output. Set the computer’s display resolution to 3200×2400, the B13 Pro’s specified source setting in the monitor guidance.
  • Choose a pure-white desktop background. A plain white field makes residual dark shapes easier to identify and avoids mistaking a tinted wallpaper for panel residue.
  • Disable eye-protection and night-mode filters. Windows Night light, f.lux and similar color-temperature or contrast filters alter the signal. Turn them off while diagnosing ghosting or color shifts, then re-enable one only if you accept its visual effect.
  • Keep scaling consistent. If text is being resampled by unusual display scaling, inspect the same page at the recommended resolution before changing monitor modes.

These settings do not make E Ink refresh like LCD. They simply prevent a tinted background, filtered whites or non-native output from being blamed on the panel’s refresh behavior.

Why a faster mode can look worse after a few minutes

Partial and aggressive modes update selected areas quickly rather than driving the entire panel through the cleanest waveform. During a single scroll, a faint trace may be acceptable; after many scrolls, tab switches and window moves, those small errors accumulate. The display can then appear generally gray or carry several generations of text at once. This is expected behavior for a speed-oriented mode, not evidence that one individual page permanently stained the panel.

A full refresh resets that accumulated state. The trade-off is the visible flash and a pause while the panel completes its stronger waveform. In practice, a refresh at the end of a demanding session is less disruptive than forcing every interaction to use the slowest clean mode.

Troubleshooting: identify the symptom before changing settings

An old page is clearly visible

Stop motion, invoke Global Refresh with a short power-button press or the remote’s Full Refresh button, and wait for completion. If the residue disappears, it was ordinary partial-update ghosting. Continue in quality mode for static content.

The screen flashes when I refresh

A black-and-white flash during a global refresh is normal. It is the panel clearing accumulated partial-update state. If flashing occurs continuously without you requesting a full refresh, note which application and mode are active, then return to normal/quality mode and test with a static white desktop. The supplied material does not establish a separate hardware fault pattern, so do not infer damage from one expected refresh flash.

Scrolling is too slow in quality mode

Use web or another faster partial mode for the scroll, then switch back after the page stops moving. A faster mode is the appropriate remedy; repeatedly pressing full refresh during the scroll will only add pauses.

Video leaves heavy after-images

That is the highest-risk workload for ghosting. Keep video mode for playback, shorten uninterrupted sessions, and perform a global refresh afterward. There is no evidence that a setting can make continuous video as clean as a conventional LCD.

Artifacts look like a color cast rather than old content

Set 3200×2400, use a pure-white desktop and disable night-mode or eye-protection filters. Then run a global refresh. If the cast remains on a static white screen after a completed refresh, record the exact mode and source settings before contacting Bigme support; do not describe it as ghosting without that controlled check.

What the B13 Pro can and cannot promise

  • It can provide a cleaner static image when you select a quality/text-oriented mode and use a global refresh to clear accumulated residue.
  • It can feel more responsive for scrolling and motion in web, aggressive or video modes.
  • It cannot combine the lowest latency, perfect cleanup and LCD-level video response in one E Ink mode.
  • It has no published, independently established percentage reduction, response-time figure or ghosting score that supports a guaranteed numerical claim.

The most dependable strategy is therefore workload-based: quality mode for reading, faster partial modes for movement, video mode only when necessary, and a full refresh after a long motion-heavy session.
