To reduce flash-loan risk, check the exact market or vault deployment and trace how it prices assets, counts voting power, handles deposits, and processes callbacks. A flash loan has to be repaid, with any fee, before its transaction ends—but that does not stop borrowed liquidity from influencing other contracts during the transaction. Assess the protocol’s actual safeguards and configuration; neither a familiar name nor an audit proves a deployment is safe.
How flash loans create risk inside one transaction
A flash loan is borrowed and must be repaid, including any fee, before the transaction ends. That short duration limits how long the borrower holds the funds; it does not prevent the funds from affecting prices, balances, rates, or voting power while the transaction is executing.
Ethereum.org’s smart contract security documentation describes a lending risk: a large flash-funded trade can move a decentralized exchange’s spot price, and a lending contract that relies on that price may then value collateral incorrectly. The documentation also warns that temporarily acquired governance tokens can be used to push a malicious proposal when voting depends on current voting power.
Which parts of a lending market or vault to inspect
| Risk surface | What to examine | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Collateral pricing | Price sources, averaging method, update frequency, stale-data behavior, and deviation handling. | A market that relies on a manipulable spot price may use a temporarily distorted value when calculating borrowing capacity. |
| Governance | Whether voting uses current balances or historical snapshots, and whether approved changes have a timelock before execution. | Current-block voting power may be temporarily acquired; a snapshot can make that less useful, while a timelock can delay a critical change. |
| Vault deposits and shares | The deployed ERC-4626 implementation and how it handles share minting, deposits, and asset donations. | OpenZeppelin documents an inflation attack as an ERC-4626 security concern. The interface label alone does not establish that a particular vault prevents it. |
| Flash-loan callbacks | Caller, lender, initiator, asset, amount, fee, data assumptions, and approval scope and lifetime. | Callback arguments and counterparties must be checked rather than trusted automatically; approvals that persist or exceed the needed scope can add exposure. |
How to assess a specific deployment
- Pin down the deployment. Identify the chain and exact contract addresses, market, version, and parameter set. A protocol name may refer to multiple markets or deployments, so general claims about the brand do not establish how the one you plan to use is configured.
- Trace the price path. Find the source or sources used for each collateral asset and vault asset. Check update frequency, stale-data behavior, and deviation handling, and determine whether any sensitive calculation reads a manipulable spot price. Ethereum.org recommends decentralized oracle networks that use multiple sources and discusses TWAP mechanisms; averaging can make a recent large trade less influential, but a longer window can also lag a rapidly changing market. A decentralized feed still has sources and failure modes that need review.
- Inspect governance timing. Determine whether votes use current balances or historical snapshots, and whether a proposal affecting critical settings must wait through a timelock before execution. Ethereum.org’s security documentation states: “One way of preventing problems related to onchain governance is to use a timelock.” The protection depends on the deployed governance design and the delay actually configured.
- Review vault accounting. For an ERC-4626 vault, inspect the deployed implementation and version, focusing on deposit and share-minting behavior under inflation or donation scenarios. Do not infer protection from the standard interface or a general description of the vault.
- Review callback and approval boundaries. If an integration receives flash-loan callbacks, verify the expected lender and initiator as well as the asset, amount, fee, and data assumptions. Check that approvals are limited to the intended spender and scope and are not left exposed longer than needed. ERC-3156’s security considerations state: “No arguments can be assumed to be genuine without some kind of verification.” ERC-7399 was marked in peer review in the referenced result; treat it as a proposal, not evidence that a deployed protocol implements it.
- Read security and control evidence. Review independent audit reports, unresolved findings, upgrade authority, emergency controls, and incident history. The Ethereum Foundation policy favors audited protocols while considering smart-contract, oracle, governance, custodial, and liquidity risks. An audit is evidence to weigh, not a guarantee against an exploit or a substitute for checking the current deployment.
How to compare protocols without relying on a single security label
Compare the deployments on their actual oracle design and failure handling, governance and upgrade delays, vault accounting protections, audit coverage, liquidity and withdrawal conditions, and administrative control. These dimensions involve trade-offs: for example, a longer oracle averaging window can damp a brief manipulation but may lag a fast market move. No single parameter is universally best, and a label such as “decentralized,” “audited,” or “ERC-4626” does not answer the deployment-specific questions above.

The available official documentation explains mechanisms and review criteria; it does not establish the current oracle addresses, collateral factors, liquidity, audit findings, or governance configuration of any named protocol. Those details can change and must be verified for the exact deployment before deciding to deposit or borrow.
