You can often reduce the size of a 24/7 nature-video archive without a visible loss, but there is no universally lossless setting: results depend on the encoder, footage, and how much detail you need to preserve. First separate your YouTube live feed from your local recording. YouTube’s live ingest guidance recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval; your local recording can use a different, quality-based profile designed to save storage.

First identify which file needs to be smaller

A live stream sent to YouTube and a recording saved to disk have different jobs. The live feed must meet the platform’s ingest requirements. An archive can be encoded separately to prioritize visual quality at a manageable file size. If you record the same feed you send live, its settings may be constrained by live-stream requirements; a separate recording encoder profile gives you more flexibility.

  • Local archive: Reduce the recording’s average data rate with an efficient codec and quality-based rate control, then test for visible artifacts.
  • YouTube ingest: Follow the current settings for the protocol and codec you use. Do not replace YouTube’s recommended live CBR with a variable-bitrate recording mode just to reduce archive size.
  • Both: Keep the ingest feed compliant and adjust the local recording independently if your software and hardware support it.

To estimate storage, multiply average bitrate by recording time. At a steady 1 Mbps, an hour is about 450 MB before container overhead; 24 hours is about 10.8 GB. Actual files vary with bitrate fluctuations, audio, and overhead. This is a planning estimate, not a target bitrate for your footage.

Choose a smaller archive profile without guessing

1. Check which codecs your encoder and playback tools support

In OBS, check the recording encoder options available on your system. OBS’s format guide ranks hardware encoder preference for high-quality recording as AV1, then HEVC, then H.264, while noting that hardware and compatibility matter. AV1 can offer better quality per file size than HEVC, and HEVC can be a useful efficiency step over H.264 when your editing and playback chain supports it. These are general codec advantages, not a guaranteed percentage reduction for every nature scene.

Prefer a hardware AV1 encoder only if your device actually exposes one and your target playback or editing tools can handle the files. OBS notes that real-time software AV1 encoding requires a high-end CPU, so it may not be suitable for every always-on computer. Test the resulting file on the devices and software you expect to use before switching your full archive.

2. Use quality-based rate control for a local recording

For a recording, a quality-based mode such as CQP lets the encoder allocate more data to complex moments and less to simple ones. In OBS 31.0, NVENC’s Variable Bitrate with Target Quality behaves similarly to CQP while adding a maximum bitrate, which can put a ceiling on file size. The option is hardware- and version-dependent; use it only if your OBS build and encoder expose it.

Quality-based recording does not produce a predictable fixed file size. Foliage moving in wind, rippling water, rain, and low-light sensor noise can all require more data than a still, clean scene. Make short test recordings before committing to a setting. Do not use a recording-oriented quality mode in place of YouTube’s live CBR recommendation without checking the platform’s current requirements.

3. Lower resolution or frame rate only if the scene still looks right

Reducing output resolution removes spatial detail; lowering frame rate reduces temporal smoothness. Either can reduce the amount of data and encoding work, but neither is automatically visually equivalent. A static landscape may tolerate fewer frames better than a close view of flowing water or moving branches. Compare short clips at the actual viewing size, including the most detailed and fastest-moving parts of your scene.

OBS lists trying 30 fps when 60 fps is not working as a performance troubleshooting step, not as a universal quality recommendation. Choose the lowest resolution and frame rate that preserve the details and movement your viewers need.

4. Keep the nature soundtrack appropriate to the archive

YouTube’s RTMP/RTMPS guidance recommends 128 Kbps stereo audio for live ingest. That is a platform recommendation for the live feed, not an established ideal setting for an archival nature soundtrack. If the recording profile is separate, compare the sound of wind, birds, water, and quiet ambience before lowering audio quality. Audio is part of the file size, but video settings usually deserve attention first.

Keep the YouTube live feed within its ingest settings

YouTube’s live encoder guidance, accessed October 3, 2026, lists H.264, HEVC, and AV1 for RTMP/RTMPS ingest, up to 60 fps, constant bitrate (CBR), and a recommended two-second keyframe frequency; it says not to exceed four seconds. The following are YouTube’s recommended ingestion bitrates, not universal archive settings or measured ideals for every camera and scene.

Ingest resolution and frame rate AV1 or HEVC H.264
1080p at 30 fps 10 Mbps 14 Mbps
1080p at 60 fps 12 Mbps 17 Mbps
720p at 30 or 60 fps 6 Mbps 8 Mbps

These values are specific to the listed YouTube RTMP/RTMPS guidance. If you use HLS ingest instead, Google documents different requirements: muxed M2TS, H.264 or HEVC, AAC audio, a closed GOP, and up to 60 fps. The HLS guidance describes it as a high-quality, high-resolution option with relatively higher latency; it does not list AV1 for HLS. Check the current YouTube live encoder settings or YouTube HLS ingestion requirements for your chosen protocol.

YouTube Help advises: “Make sure that you test before you start your live stream. Tests should include audio and movement in the video similar to what you’ll be doing in the stream.” Apply that advice to nature footage: include moving leaves or water, low-light noise, and the actual soundtrack in your test.

Choose a container for recovery and editing

A container does not deliver the main compression savings; the codec and its settings do. Container choice affects whether a recording survives interruption and whether downstream tools can open it. OBS describes MKV as flexible and recoverable after an interrupted recording, while noting that some editing software may require remuxing. Fragmented MP4 or MOV can fit common upload and editing workflows. Pick the format your tools support, and favor recovery if uninterrupted recording matters.

Validate the profile before using it around the clock

  1. Record representative footage. Include daytime and low-light scenes, moving foliage, water, and any other details that challenge the encoder.
  2. Compare at the intended viewing size. Look for blockiness, smearing, lost fine texture, flicker, and audio artifacts. Check motion as well as still frames.
  3. Measure the output. Note each test’s duration and file size, then calculate its average bitrate. Compare size only alongside the visual result.
  4. Run a sustained test. Verify that the encoder remains stable, the recording continues, and the live feed stays healthy if both are running.
  5. Save the final profile. Record the OBS version, encoder, codec, rate-control mode, quality value or cap, resolution, frame rate, audio settings, and container. Recheck after software or driver updates.

Common problems and fixes

  • The archive is still large: Motion, foliage, water, or low-light noise may be driving up data use. Test a more efficient supported codec and its quality-based recording mode, then compare representative clips. Do not assume a particular codec switch guarantees a set percentage reduction.
  • The image looks soft or blocky: The quality target or bitrate ceiling may be too restrictive, or resolution may be too low. Raise the quality setting or cap, or restore resolution, and test again.
  • The recording stutters or the system struggles: Encoding may exceed the system’s real-time capacity. Check encoder load and OBS’s performance guidance; hardware support and software encoding demands vary. Lowering output resolution or trying 30 fps can reduce load, but reassess the visual trade-off.
  • The live stream is rejected or unstable after changing settings: Confirm that the codec, CBR mode, bitrate, frame rate, and keyframe interval match the current requirements for your ingest protocol. Recording settings do not automatically satisfy live ingest rules.
  • A power loss makes the file difficult to use: Consider recording to MKV for recovery, then remux it if your editor or upload workflow requires another container.
  • The file plays poorly in an editor or on a target device: The codec may not be supported by that tool. Test the entire playback and editing chain before adopting AV1 or HEVC for long recordings.

What compression can—and cannot—promise

There is no universal percentage by which changing codecs will shrink an archive of nature footage without a visible difference. The result depends on motion, lighting, noise, encoder implementation, and the quality threshold you accept. A 2023 preprint on a proposed content-adaptive variable-frame-rate method reports results under its own experimental conditions, including average quality and energy comparisons; those findings are not a guarantee of file-size savings from an OBS setting or from 24/7 nature footage. Treat your own representative test as the decision point.
