Start by setting brightness for the room, making text and controls easy to read, and using Extra dim if the phone is still too bright at its lowest setting. Night Light and Dark theme are optional viewing preferences—not proven cures for eye strain. Android settings and menu names vary by phone maker, model, and version.
Which Android settings should you try first?
These controls do different jobs. Brightness and Extra dim change how much light the display emits; font and display size make content easier to see without changing its color. Start with the adjustment that addresses your problem rather than turning on every filter.
| Setting | What it changes | Best starting point |
|---|---|---|
| Brightness | Display brightness | Set it to a comfortable level for the room. |
| Font size or display size | Text size or the scale of interface elements | Increase the size if reading or tapping is difficult. |
| Extra dim | Brightness below the phone’s usual minimum | Try it if the screen remains uncomfortable in a dark room. |
| Night Light | Screen color, shifted toward warmer tones | Try it as an evening preference, not as a proven eye-strain treatment. |
| Dark theme | Background and interface appearance in supported apps | Compare it with the light theme and keep whichever feels more comfortable. |
How to adjust brightness and make text larger
Set brightness for the room
Avoid making the screen brighter than you need to see comfortably. On Pixel phones, open Settings > Display & touch > Brightness level. Adaptive brightness adjusts to surrounding light and learns your preferences over time. On Pixel 4 and later, the display may temporarily go above its normal maximum in extremely bright ambient light. These details are Pixel-specific; other Android phones can use different controls and behavior. There is no medically established brightness percentage that is right for everyone.
Increase font size or display size
If text is too small, search Settings for Font size and move the slider. If controls and other interface elements are too small, search for Display size instead. On Pixel, both controls are under Settings > Display & touch > Display size and text. Some apps do not follow the system font-size setting, and labels or locations can differ on other Android phones.

How to dim your phone below its normal minimum
Android’s Extra dim feature can reduce brightness below the ordinary minimum. Google describes it as a way to make reading more comfortable. Look under Settings > Accessibility for Extra dim, or search Settings for “Extra dim” if the path differs. On Pixel 10 and later, Extra dim is in the Quick Settings brightness slider; Pixel 9 and earlier use the older Accessibility control. Other manufacturers may arrange the feature differently.
Does Night Light help with eye strain?
Night Light shifts the display toward warmer colors and can be scheduled on Pixel. Google says reducing blue color may make a screen easier to use in dim light and that blue light may make falling asleep harder. That is not evidence that Night Light prevents eye damage or reliably treats daytime eye strain.

On Pixel 9 and earlier, and Pixel 10a, find it at Settings > Display & touch > Night Light. On Pixel 10 models other than Pixel 10a, Google places the control under Comfort filters. Names and availability vary on other Android devices.
Should you use Dark theme?
Dark theme changes the appearance of supported app and system backgrounds; it does not work consistently in every app. On Android, it is generally under Settings > Display. Google says it can make the screen easier to read and save battery on some screens. Try both themes under the conditions in which you use your phone and keep the one that feels more comfortable; a dark interface will not help everyone.

Pixel-only display options
Some newer Pixel phones offer additional controls that should not be mistaken for standard Android features:
- Comfort View: Google documents adaptive or manually adjusted color filters on Pixel 10, Pixel 10 Pro, Pixel 10 Pro XL, and Pixel 10 Pro Fold.
- Adjust brightness for sensitive eyes: Google documents this customization on Pixel 10 Pro, Pixel 10 Pro XL, and Pixel 10 Pro Fold. Google notes that it is not medical advice.
Take breaks and blink, too
The American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO) says, “Looking at a computer screen will not harm your eyes, but doing so without breaks can contribute to eye strain or dry eyes.” Its general screen-use advice—not a phone-specific clinical trial—is to rest your eyes every 20 minutes by looking up or across the room, and to blink regularly. AAO guidance also says it does not recommend special eyewear for computer use, so blue-light glasses are not a necessary purchase for this purpose.

Digital-device use can be associated with symptoms including tired or sore eyes, blurred vision, dryness, burning, and headaches, according to the AAO EyeWiki review, which is marked Update Pending and has an editor review date of March 15, 2026. EyeWiki discusses breaks, blinking, and lighting, and cautions that an anti-glare filter may not reduce eye strain.
