Set your Brother printer to use a low-power idle state, but keep its control panel visible and comfortable to reach. Start with Sleep or Deep Sleep, then consider Auto Power Off only if your exact model’s manual confirms it will still wake and remain available the way you need.
Start with Sleep or Deep Sleep
Sleep and Deep Sleep are the printer-side settings most directly intended to reduce energy use while the machine is idle. Brother says Deep Sleep uses less power than Sleep. On supported models, a print job wakes the printer; some model instructions also say a control-panel key can wake it. The exact wake behavior can depend on the printer and its network configuration, so check your model’s guide before changing settings if you rely on remote or network printing.
Brother’s Sleep Time guidance describes the setting as a way to reduce power consumption, while its Sleep Mode guidance explains the difference between Sleep and Deep Sleep. These are manufacturer statements, not a measured estimate of savings for your particular printer.
Adjust the idle timer using your model’s instructions
On supported printers, the Sleep Time setting controls how long the machine waits before entering Sleep. The menu path and available timer range vary by model, so use the guide or support page for the exact model number printed on your machine.

Brother’s model-specific menu example
For the monochrome laser fax/MFC models covered by one Brother support article, the path is General Setup > Ecology > Sleep Time. That article gives a maximum setting of 50 minutes for those models; it is not a universal limit for Brother printers. If your menus differ, do not assume the same path or range applies—look up your model in Brother support.
Use Auto Power Off only if it suits how you print
On models that offer it, Auto Power Off goes further than Deep Sleep by turning the machine off after a period of inactivity. This can affect readiness and remote access, so treat it as optional rather than a default recommendation. Check the exact manual for what can wake the printer and whether jobs sent over your network remain available.

Exceptions are model-specific. Some Brother instructions say Auto Power Off will not activate while the machine is connected to a network or telephone line, or while secure print data is stored. A Brother page for one product family lists 1-, 2-, 4-, or 8-hour choices, but those intervals should not be assumed for other models. See Brother’s Auto Power Off instructions for the covered family and confirm the behavior in your own printer’s guide.
Choose print defaults for paper and toner savings
Print settings can reduce consumables, but paper or toner savings are not the same as a verified reduction in electricity use. Use these options when they fit the document:

- Duplex (two-sided) printing: Choose it for documents where printing on both sides is practical. ENERGY STAR recommends double-sided or image-combination options where suitable as general imaging-equipment practices, not as a Brother-specific energy guarantee.
- Toner Save: Consider it for ordinary text or draft output if your printer and driver support it. Brother warns that it makes output lighter and does not recommend it for photo or grayscale images. The cited instructions are Windows-oriented; options can differ by operating system and device. See Brother’s Windows default printer settings guidance.
- Print only when needed: ENERGY STAR gives this general advice for imaging equipment and also recommends keeping sleep settings engaged. Its guidance is not a performance claim for a particular Brother model. See ENERGY STAR’s imaging equipment guidance.
Keep the controls easy to reach
Place the printer where you can see its display and comfortably operate its buttons, with clear space to approach the panel. Avoid putting it on a shelf or behind objects if that makes the controls awkward to reach. No printer-specific reach height or ergonomic distance is established here, so prioritize an unobstructed, comfortable position rather than a particular measurement.
Do not make unplugging the printer a routine energy-saving step if you depend on network jobs; it can make the printer unavailable until power is restored. Use the printer’s supported low-power settings instead, after confirming that their wake behavior fits your setup.
