No single technique guarantees smooth playback on every browser or device.
How do I find what is causing the dropped frames?
Reproduce the stutter with the same story sequence, browser, display, and device you intend to use for the stream. Record a trace during the problem rather than relying on a low FPS reading alone: frame rate describes the symptom, while the trace helps show where time is being spent. Chrome’s runtime performance guide explains how to inspect rendering work.
- Open the animated story in Chrome and open DevTools.
- Select the Performance panel and record while the representative animation is running and the stutter occurs.
- Inspect the FPS chart and Frames section for low-frame-rate periods and dropped or partially presented frames.
- Check the main-thread flame chart for long tasks and the GPU, raster, animation, and frame-timing tracks for work occurring elsewhere.
- Save a baseline and note the sequence, browser, device, display behavior, and resource use so later measurements are comparable.
Chrome’s Performance features reference distinguishes idle, on-time, partially presented, and dropped frames; a dropped frame is one Chrome cannot render in reasonable time. A busy main thread, GPU activity, and raster work point to different investigations. Don’t infer that a graphics-card or processor upgrade is needed from the FPS symptom alone.
How should I schedule JavaScript animation?
Use requestAnimationFrame() for JavaScript-driven visual updates. The browser invokes the callback before repaint, and the API is one-shot: the animation loop must request its next callback itself. Advance the story from the callback’s timestamp or elapsed time, not by a fixed amount per callback.

The important point is to base progress on time rather than assuming one callback equals one fixed-duration frame. MDN notes that callback frequency generally follows display refresh; common examples include 60, 75, 120, and 144 Hz. These are examples, not a universal target or guarantee for every stream. What should happen when the page is hidden?
Decide whether the story must keep advancing while its document is hidden, or whether rendering can pause and resume. Most browsers pause requestAnimationFrame() callbacks in background tabs or hidden iframes, so an always-on requirement does not ensure foreground-rate rendering in a hidden page.

Listen for visibilitychange and handle the transition explicitly. If hidden rendering is unnecessary, stop scheduling visual work while hidden and resume when visible. If the story must remain synchronized, define how elapsed time should be handled after visibility returns; don’t assume hidden callbacks ran at the expected cadence. When is OffscreenCanvas worth trying?
Try OffscreenCanvas when the trace indicates canvas rendering is occupying the main thread and interfering with other work. It can decouple the DOM canvas element from Canvas API operations and allow rendering in a worker context. It is not a universal fix for GPU-bound work, excessive drawing, or unrelated bottlenecks.

- Confirm in the trace that canvas-related main-thread work is a meaningful source of contention.
- Check OffscreenCanvas support details against the browsers and devices in your deployment matrix.
- Transfer the canvas and move the rendering work into a worker using the API pattern appropriate to your application.
- Repeat the same representative trace and compare frame outcomes, main-thread time, CPU load, GPU/raster activity, visual timing, memory, and power.
Keep the change only if it improves the measured bottleneck without harming visual fidelity or long-running resource use.
Which animation technique should I choose?
There is no universally best choice among CSS animation, JavaScript with requestAnimationFrame(), canvas, or worker rendering. Choose based on the story’s visual behavior and the workload shown by profiling. MDN notes that compositor-offloaded effects can be efficient and that simple transforms or opacity may suit some effects. However, indiscriminate layer promotion or GPU hints can consume memory; test them on the target browser and device rather than assuming they help. How do I verify that a change helped?
Change one likely bottleneck at a time and record the same story sequence before and after. Compare:
- Frame duration and the frequency and severity of dropped or partially presented frames.
- Main-thread time and CPU load.
- GPU and raster activity when the trace implicates them.
- Visual fidelity and story timing.
- Memory and power use during a long run.
- Behavior across the browsers, devices, and display-refresh conditions the stream must support.
A result on one machine is not proof of the same outcome on another. The browser documentation offers profiling methods and API behavior, not a guaranteed frame-rate result for a particular animated stream.
