To use less diesel during an outage, prioritize essential electrical loads, reduce or disconnect noncritical equipment, and operate the generator according to its own rating and manufacturer instructions. There is no universal load percentage or guaranteed fuel-saving figure that applies to every generator. Plan fuel deliveries and maintain the generator and stored fuel so conservation does not come at the cost of dependable backup power.

Which loads should you keep running?

Start by identifying the equipment and circuits that provide essential services, then estimate how much power they require. The U.S. Department of Energy advises businesses to determine the power needed for vital systems during an emergency. Make this list before an outage, while you have time to distinguish necessities from conveniences. DOE guidance on preparing for utility disruptions

  • Keep: loads needed for safety, essential communications, critical work, or equipment that must remain operational.
  • Reduce: equipment that can run at lower demand or be used less often.
  • Disconnect: noncritical loads whose service can be paused during the outage.

As an outage continues, review the list rather than letting every connected load run by default. In an illustrative facility-microgrid scenario, DOE says reducing or disconnecting noncritical loads can reduce fuel consumption during a longer outage. That supports the load-management approach, but it does not establish a specific saving for a household generator, a particular appliance, or another facility. DOE’s microgrid example

How to manage loads without exceeding the generator’s limits

Compare the demand you intend to serve with the generator’s nameplate ratings and operating instructions. Generator ratings differ by intended duty, including standby, prime, and continuous operation. Guidance written for one rating class should not be treated as a fuel-saving target or transferred to a different generator.

  • Durable and Strong: The 1-1/4-inch steel cradle adds strength and durability to the generator, ensuring it can handle the rigors of the job site or other challenging situations. A dependable power source engineered to keep running when you need it most

DOE’s generator material, for example, describes standby service as sized for a maximum 80% average load factor and roughly 200 hours per year, and gives prime-power guidance that variable load should not exceed 70% of the prime rating on average during an operational period of 250 hours. These are rating-specific operating contexts, not universal targets for reducing fuel use. Follow the documentation for the unit and its intended application. Do not overload a generator to preserve every service, and do not disconnect or cycle equipment in a way that conflicts with its operating requirements. When in doubt, consult the generator and equipment manuals or a qualified technician.

Plan fuel supply for the outage, not just the tank

Stored fuel is only part of the plan. Contact your supplier in advance to confirm emergency arrangements, site access for deliveries, and whether the supplier can operate if normal power is unavailable. Fuel availability during an emergency depends on local conditions, so a delivery plan should account for possible delays or access constraints. DOE guidance on responding to an energy emergency

Maintain the generator and stored diesel

Conserving fuel is not useful if poor maintenance or fuel quality makes backup power unreliable. DOE-STD-3003-2000 describes a diesel-fuel quality program that includes periodic testing and removal of water from storage tanks. It also recommends cool fuel storage and keeping the tank full to limit breathing and air exposure. The standard is dated 2000 and was written for DOE facilities, so apply its practices only in line with the tank design, generator manufacturer’s instructions, and current local requirements. What fuel savings can you expect?

The cited sources do not provide a directly relevant measured percentage or gallons-saved figure for shedding loads during an outage. Actual consumption depends on the generator and the loads it serves; the sources do not compare individual appliances or quantify the savings from switching them off. Avoid relying on a generic promise. If you need a site-specific estimate, use information for your generator and actual operating conditions rather than assuming a universal result.
