To use less data when streaming from Castr to YouTube, lower the encoder’s video bitrate, then reduce resolution or frame rate if the picture remains acceptable. Stream for less time when possible, and test the settings against your upload connection before going live. These changes reduce the data sent from your streaming setup; they do not control how much viewers watch or Castr’s separate bandwidth allocation for its own player.
First, identify which data use you want to reduce
There are two different connections to consider:
- Your outbound upload: data sent from your encoder or streaming device to Castr and onward to YouTube. This is usually the concern on a mobile or metered connection. Bitrate and broadcast duration are the main settings to manage.
- Castr player delivery: bandwidth used to deliver video to viewers through Castr’s embedded player. That usage can vary with viewer count, stream bitrate and duration, and is separate from your encoder’s upload use. See Castr’s live-stream documentation and its bandwidth overage information for applicable account details.
If you are sending a Castr stream to YouTube, focus first on the encoder settings and the connection carrying your contribution feed. Changing viewer playback quality in Castr’s player will not reduce the data your encoder sends.
Estimate the data before changing settings
YouTube’s mobile filming guidance gives an approximate planning figure of about 10 MB per minute of live streaming. It is not a universal measurement: the actual amount varies with quality and connection conditions. The estimate also should not be treated as a precise forecast for an encoder-based Castr broadcast or a mobile carrier bill. See YouTube’s mobile filming tips.
For an encoder-based stream, bitrate and duration provide a more useful rough estimate. A bitrate of 1 Mbps is about 0.125 MB per second, or 7.5 MB per minute, before transport overhead and other traffic. Multiply that by your planned streaming minutes for an approximate video-data figure. Actual network and carrier accounting can differ; the available guidance does not establish an exact total for a particular Castr-to-YouTube broadcast, including overhead, retries or background device traffic.

Lower bitrate without making the stream unstable
Bitrate is the most direct encoder control for reducing the amount of video data sent per second. YouTube’s H.264 recommendations include these examples:

These are YouTube recommendations, not guarantees of data consumption or a single ideal setting for every stream. Consult the current YouTube live encoder settings for the applicable resolution, frame rate and encoding guidance.

- In your encoder, locate the video bitrate setting for the stream profile you send to Castr. The exact menu name depends on the encoder.
- Choose a bitrate appropriate to the resolution and frame rate you intend to send. If reducing data is more important than retaining detail, test a lower setting rather than assuming the recommended figure is a minimum.
- Check the image for blockiness, smearing or lost detail, especially during motion. If the picture is no longer acceptable, raise the bitrate or reduce the output resolution or frame rate.
- Before the event, run an upload speed test and do a private or otherwise suitable test stream. YouTube recommends matching quality to the available connection, testing beforehand and monitoring stream health. Leave headroom rather than setting the stream at the full measured upload speed.
Castr’s current live-stream dashboard can show bitrate, resolution, codec and audio bitrate while a stream is live. Use the displayed values to confirm what is actually being sent instead of relying on a saved profile name. Castr also documents adaptive-bitrate renditions for its own player; those viewer-side renditions are a separate delivery question, and controls or availability may depend on the plan.
Reduce resolution or frame rate if bitrate alone is not enough
Resolution affects picture detail; frame rate affects how smoothly motion appears. Lowering either can make a lower bitrate more usable, but the trade-off depends on the content. A mostly static talk or lecture may tolerate less frame rate than fast-moving footage; small text or detailed graphics may become difficult to read at lower resolution.

- Try a lower resolution if fine detail is not essential and your current bitrate is too costly or unstable.
- Try a lower frame rate if the video contains little fast motion and you can accept less smooth movement.
- Re-test the combination. YouTube’s recommendations vary by resolution and frame rate, so do not apply one bitrate figure to every output format.
YouTube transcodes live streams into output formats for viewers, but that does not mean you should send a higher-quality source than your connection or data budget can support. Choose the encoder output based on your production needs and available upload capacity.
Shorten the broadcast when the program allows
At a fixed bitrate, a shorter stream sends less total data. If the broadcast does not need to run continuously, avoid leaving the encoder live before the program begins or after it ends. For recurring programs, set a practical start and end time and include only the time needed for setup, transitions and closing content.

Does multistreaming to YouTube use data once per destination?
Castr describes multistreaming as sending one contribution feed to multiple services, including YouTube. Do not assume that adding destinations multiplies your source upload by the number of destinations: the exact upload behavior depends on the configuration, and the available product information does not establish one universal figure for every setup. Castr’s multistreaming information describes its service, but check your live dashboard and connection usage for your configuration.

If your concern is a Castr account’s player bandwidth allocation rather than the data leaving your encoder, review the allocation and overage rules for your current plan in Castr’s account and current documentation. Castr says player bandwidth can increase with higher bitrate, more viewers and longer duration; plan behavior and protections can vary. Adaptive bitrate delivery can let Castr’s player offer viewers different renditions, but it is not a reduction to your encoder’s outbound upload.

Troubleshooting high data use or stream problems
- Your meter rises faster than expected: Confirm the actual bitrate and stream duration in the encoder or Castr dashboard. Check whether other devices or apps on the same connection are also using data; the available service guidance does not quantify that background usage.
- The stream buffers or drops after lowering bitrate: Check upload speed and stream health. A lower bitrate can help an overloaded connection, but unstable connectivity may still interrupt the broadcast. Test again with a bitrate that leaves headroom.
- The picture looks poor: Restore some bitrate, resolution or frame rate, changing one setting at a time. Assess the stream using the kind of content you will broadcast, especially motion and small details.
- Castr player bandwidth is depleted or near its limit: Verify that you are looking at player-delivery usage, not encoder upload. Check current plan-specific allocation and overage behavior in your Castr account; terms can change.
- You added destinations and expect a predictable data total: Do not calculate by multiplying the source bitrate by destination count without confirming how your Castr setup distributes the feed. Check the active dashboard and account configuration.
