To reduce data usage in Larix Broadcaster, lower the outgoing video bitrate, then reduce resolution or frame rate if needed. A stream averaging 1 Mbps sends about 450 MB of encoded video data per hour; actual mobile data accounting may be higher because of network overhead, retransmissions and other phone traffic. Test the settings on your own connection before going live.
What to change first in Larix
- Open Larix’s video or encoder settings and find the bitrate control. Menu labels vary by app version and operating system.
- Choose a modest output to test. 720p at 30 fps is a reasonable starting point for many broadcasts, but the right setting depends on your subject, image quality needs and cellular upload. YouTube’s H.264 recommendation for 720p30 is 8 Mbps, not a mobile-data-saving cap. A lower value uses less data but falls below that recommendation; check that the image and stream remain acceptable.
- Lower the bitrate target if the picture is usable and you need to cut usage further. If lowering it makes the picture too poor or the stream unstable, reduce the output resolution and/or frame rate, then test again.
- Use a frame rate suited to the content. A talking-head broadcast may not need the same smooth motion as sport or a moving camera. A lower frame rate can help reduce the bitrate needed, but Larix uses the phone’s system encoder and cannot guarantee an exact output frame rate.
- Keep only the YouTube destination enabled unless you intentionally need to send the stream elsewhere. Larix can stream to as many as three destinations simultaneously, according to Beeline’s Larix setup guide; multiple destinations can increase outgoing traffic.
Larix treats the bitrate as a target rather than a universal hard cap. Its FAQ says Android lets you type a bitrate, while iOS offers predefined values. The device encoder may not hold a very low target: on Android, variable-bitrate quality-floor behavior can push the output above it. Larix says a device with constant-bitrate (CBR) support is needed to hold a low rate regardless of quality.
How much data a bitrate uses per hour
For a constant bitrate, estimate encoded payload with this formula:
Data in MB ≈ bitrate in Mbps × 450 × duration in hours

| Bitrate | Estimated encoded payload per hour |
|---|---|
| 1 Mbps | About 450 MB |
| 2 Mbps | About 900 MB |
| 4 Mbps | About 1,800 MB (1.8 GB decimal) |
This is a bit-to-byte conversion, not a measurement of your phone bill. Actual cellular usage can be higher because bitrate varies, and the estimate excludes protocol overhead, retransmissions and unrelated phone traffic. For a rough session estimate, multiply the average bitrate in Mbps by 450 and by the session length in hours.
YouTube bitrate guidance: quality targets, not data caps
YouTube’s H.264 encoder guidance, accessed in 2026, gives these recommended ingest bitrates. Treat them as quality and ingest guidance—not as requirements for every mobile broadcast or settings designed to minimize data.

| Output | YouTube H.264 recommended bitrate |
|---|---|
| 360p30 | 4 Mbps |
| 480p30 | 4 Mbps |
| 720p30 | 8 Mbps |
| 720p60 | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p30 | 14 Mbps |
| 1080p60 | 17 Mbps |
The table’s recommendations are much higher than the 1–2 Mbps examples in the data estimate. Those lower rates can save data, but they are below YouTube’s listed recommendations and may produce visibly worse quality or an unstable result. Choose based on your actual scene and connection rather than assuming a single bitrate is right for every stream. YouTube also recommends CBR, a keyframe interval of 2 seconds (not over 4 seconds), and AAC or MP3 audio. Larix’s device encoder may limit which settings it can apply. See YouTube’s live encoder settings.
Larix defaults, adaptive bitrate and device differences
Default bitrate values
Larix’s FAQ lists resolution-based bitrate defaults: 2160p, 4,500 Kbps; 1080p, 3,000 Kbps; 720p, 2,000 Kbps; 540p, 1,500 Kbps; 480p, 1,000 Kbps; 360p, 700 Kbps; 288p, 500 Kbps; and 144p, 300 Kbps. These are Larix defaults, not YouTube recommendations. The FAQ says HEVC halves those default values and 50 fps or higher multiplies them by 1.6.

Adaptive bitrate
Larix offers adaptive-bitrate modes, but availability and behavior depend on the operating system, protocol and mode. Hybrid mode also considers latency for RTMP and RTSP; Larix lists Android Hybrid support only for SRT, while iOS support includes RTMP, RTSP and SRT. Do not assume a given adaptive mode works the same way for every YouTube RTMP setup. Adaptive bitrate reacts to delivery conditions, not to your monthly data allowance, and may raise the rate again when the connection improves.
Larix uses the system encoder, so a selected frame rate or bitrate is not a guarantee of exact output on every phone. Its FAQ explains that the device encoder uses the defined or default bitrate as a target. If the actual usage is higher than expected, check the session statistics and whether your device is honoring the requested rate.

Test and verify before the real broadcast
- Use the same phone, mobile connection, resolution, frame rate and bitrate you plan to use for the event.
- Make a short private or unlisted test with audio and movement similar to the real broadcast. YouTube specifically advises testing with comparable audio and motion, then checking stream health.
- Watch YouTube’s stream-health warnings and Larix’s available session statistics. If the image is acceptable and the connection is stable, note the actual average bitrate.
- Estimate the session payload with average Mbps × 450 MB × expected hours. Compare that estimate with your mobile provider’s usage meter after the test, allowing for overhead and other phone activity.
- If usage is still too high, change one setting at a time: first bitrate, then resolution or frame rate as needed. Test again rather than relying on a setting that has not been checked on your connection.
Cellular upload capacity varies by location and time; there is no single India-specific bitrate established for all carriers or regions. Test where and when you expect to stream.
Common problems and fixes
- Data use is higher than the estimate: The estimate assumes a constant bitrate and excludes overhead and other traffic. Check Larix’s actual session rate, make sure only intended destinations are active, and compare the phone’s usage meter over a test period.
- The picture remains data-heavy after lowering the target: The encoder may treat the value as a target rather than a cap, particularly with Android VBR quality-floor behavior. Try a lower resolution or frame rate; a device with CBR support may be needed to maintain a low fixed rate.
- YouTube reports poor stream health: Test the mobile uplink again and reduce the bitrate or output resolution until delivery is stable. YouTube recommends monitoring stream health and testing before the event.
- The video looks choppy or motion detail suffers: A lower rate may be insufficient for the scene. Test with the same movement as the broadcast and consider raising bitrate or lowering resolution; a talking-head scene and fast-moving footage may need different trade-offs.
- Adaptive mode does not appear or behave as expected: Check Larix’s availability for your operating system, protocol and selected mode. Do not treat adaptation as a data-budget limiter.
