To reduce buffering on a 24/7 bhajan stream, first find out whether the problem is in the broadcast leaving your encoder or in individual viewers’ playback. For a YouTube Live stream, check upload bandwidth and encoder health, use a sustainable bitrate with upload headroom, connect the encoder by Ethernet when possible, and start with normal latency if the stream is not interactive. YouTube is the working platform assumption here; other services may use different labels and settings.

First identify whose connection is buffering

Buffering can originate at the broadcaster’s end or at a viewer’s end. A weak or inconsistent upload path can disrupt the stream for many people; a viewer with limited download bandwidth, a congested Wi-Fi connection, or an app issue may be the only person affected. The title alone cannot identify the cause.

  1. Note the time buffering occurs and whether it affects one viewer or several.
  2. Ask a few affected viewers to report their device, YouTube app or browser, network type (Wi-Fi or mobile data), and approximate time.
  3. Compare reports from viewers on different connections. A single report is not enough to conclude that an ISP or a whole region is at fault.

Check the broadcaster’s upload and encoder

Measure upload capacity under real conditions

Run an upload speed test during the hours when the stream normally runs, especially busy hours. Download speed and the headline speed of an internet plan do not tell you how much reliable upload capacity the encoder can use. Household or venue traffic—such as other uploads or video calls—can reduce that capacity.

YouTube recommends keeping the total stream bitrate within available upload bandwidth and allowing 20% headroom. That margin is important for a continuous stream: if the connection fluctuates or other devices use the network, an encoder set close to the measured maximum may struggle. If the path is unstable, reduce the resolution or bitrate until the stream can stay within the usable upload capacity.

Choose a sustainable resolution and bitrate

Bitrate depends on resolution, frame rate, and codec; there is no single correct setting for every bhajan stream or internet connection. YouTube’s H.264 guidance lists these examples:

Output Listed minimum Recommended bitrate
720p at 30 fps 3 Mbps 6 Mbps
1080p at 30 fps 5 Mbps 10 Mbps

These are YouTube ingest recommendations, not a promise that a particular Indian connection can sustain the bitrate or that every viewer will receive that quality. If your measured upload is variable, a lower, stable setting is generally more useful than a higher setting that repeatedly overwhelms the connection. YouTube transcodes live streams into multiple output formats for different devices and network conditions.

Use the YouTube encoder settings it recommends

For YouTube Live, set the encoder to constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval; YouTube says not to exceed four seconds. Confirm the selected output resolution and frame rate match what you intend to send. If you change settings, run an unlisted rehearsal and check that the picture, motion, audio, and stream-health indicators remain steady before relying on them for a continuous broadcast.

Use Ethernet if the setup allows

YouTube recommends Ethernet for computer-based live streaming. Connect the encoder computer to the router with a wired Ethernet connection when practical; this removes the computer’s Wi-Fi link as one potential source of instability. A suitable Cat6 Ethernet cable can make that connection if both the computer and network equipment have Ethernet ports and the cable is long enough. It cannot fix an overloaded network or unreliable ISP service by itself.

Choose latency for a devotional stream

If the stream is prerecorded bhajan content and viewers do not need to interact in real time, normal latency is usually the sensible starting point. YouTube Help cautions: “Lower latency may mean more playback buffering.” Lower latency leaves less read-ahead buffer, so viewers have less protection against brief network slowdowns. Choose a lower-latency mode only when the reduced delay matters to the stream’s purpose.

Do not switch to HLS ingestion simply as a buffering fix. YouTube’s HLS ingestion documentation describes higher latency than RTMP because HLS sends segments; a protocol change is not a general cure for unstable upload or viewer playback conditions.

Use the Live Control Room to separate causes

Watch YouTube Live Control Room and the encoder’s status while the stream runs. If encoder output or stream health looks unhealthy, inspect local CPU load, encoder warnings, the source audio and video, and the recording being played. If the outgoing stream looks healthy but viewers still report interruptions, investigate outbound connectivity and ISP service as well as viewer-side playback. For a 24/7 stream, record the time and symptoms so a brief incident can be compared with encoder status and viewer reports rather than guessed at afterward.

Help viewers test playback

When only some viewers have trouble, ask them to try playback on another connection and device. Switching between Wi-Fi and mobile data can help distinguish a local network issue; trying the YouTube app versus a supported browser can expose an app- or browser-specific problem. On a phone or tablet, clearing the YouTube app cache is another reasonable troubleshooting step.

TP-Link AC1200 Gigabit Dual Band WiFi Router (Archer A6)
  • Dual band router upgrades to 1200 Mbps high speed internet (300mbps for 2.4GHz plus 900Mbps for 5GHz), reducing buffering and ideal for 4K stream
  • Full Gigabit Ports - Gigabit Router with 4 Gigabit LAN ports, ideal for any internet plan and allow you to directly connect your wired devices

  • MU-MIMO technology - (5GHz band) allows high speeds for multiple devices simultaneously
  • Access Point Mode - Supports AP Mode to transform your wired connection into wireless network, an ideal wireless router for home

For YouTube TV playback, YouTube describes the default broadcast delay setting as best for minimizing interruptions. Viewers should avoid changing playback settings in ways that prioritize lower delay if uninterrupted viewing matters more.

Prepare a 24/7 stream for interruptions

A 24/7 broadcast needs a routine, not just a one-time bitrate choice. YouTube’s live-stream checklist recommends setting up in advance, previewing, testing encoder failover, verifying mobile access, and monitoring audio and video. These checks can reveal problems before they affect a long run, but they do not guarantee nonstop uptime.

  • Rehearse an unlisted stream with the intended resolution, bitrate, audio, and source video.
  • Check stream health and playback from a phone or another viewer device.
  • Test the planned failover approach rather than assuming a backup will take over correctly.
  • Schedule periodic checks and keep notes on the time, encoder status, and reports from viewers if an interruption occurs.

Or let it run in the cloud

If the stream is made from uploaded bhajan videos rather than a live camera, StreamNeo can keep a YouTube channel live from the cloud: upload a recording or build a playlist, add the YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home, including a computer or OBS. Every quality up to 4K 60fps is streamed as uploaded at one flat price per slot, and StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for YouTube and uploaded videos, not camera streaming. Learn more at StreamNeo, or start your free day.
