First find out where the buffering occurs. If OBS’s Dropped frames counter rises, the encoder-to-YouTube connection may be unstable or unable to sustain the configured bitrate. Check YouTube’s stream-health messages as well. If only one viewer has playback stalls while the outgoing stream appears healthy, the problem may be on that viewer’s playback path instead.

For a home NAS setup, start with the stream’s health signals, a bitrate your stable upload connection can carry, the encoder settings YouTube recommends, and a wired network path if practical. Investigate NAS processing only if the NAS is actually encoding or transcoding the video.

Work out which part of the stream is buffering

A YouTube live stream involves more than one connection: the video must be prepared by an encoder, sent to YouTube, and then delivered to each viewer. A problem at one stage does not prove a problem at another.

  • Outgoing connection: OBS’s increasing Dropped frames counter points to a connection to the streaming service that is unstable or cannot keep up with the configured bitrate. OBS says it drops frames to avoid buffering and keep the stream playing. This signal concerns the encoder’s outgoing stream; it does not diagnose every viewer’s playback.
  • YouTube ingest or configuration: Check the stream-health status and messages in YouTube’s Live Control Room. YouTube can flag configuration issues, including bitrate and keyframe problems.
  • Viewer playback: Ask whether the stream stalls for all viewers or just one device or connection. If the encoder reports no dropped frames and YouTube shows healthy ingest, a single viewer’s stall does not by itself indicate a NAS or encoder problem.

For YouTube’s health signals and issue details, see its LiveStreams API documentation; use the current Live Control Room messages as the practical guide when troubleshooting.

Reduce buffering in a diagnostic order

Change one setting or piece of the network path at a time, then retest. That makes it easier to tell whether a change helped.

1. Observe a representative test stream

Before relying on a setup for a long run, test it with movement and audio similar to the real stream. YouTube recommends a pre-stream test and monitoring stream health during the event. Watch OBS’s dropped-frame counter and YouTube’s health messages while the test runs; a brief idle test may not represent a more demanding stream.

2. Match bitrate to stable upload capacity

Run an upload speed test, as YouTube recommends, then consider the capacity the connection can sustain rather than relying on a single peak result. Other household traffic can reduce available upload capacity. If OBS reports dropped frames, lower the encoder bitrate and test again.

OBS offers using 75% of total upload speed as a troubleshooting starting point, not a guarantee or a YouTube-mandated setting. Leave headroom for variation and other traffic; a bitrate that merely matches a speed-test peak may not be stable enough for an always-on stream.

YouTube’s currently maintained live encoder page lists these recommended H.264 bitrates. Choose the row for the actual output resolution and frame rate; these values are not interchangeable across every setup.

Output Recommended H.264 bitrate
720p at 60 fps 8 Mbps
1080p at 30 fps 14 Mbps
1080p at 60 fps 17 Mbps

The same YouTube page lists these recommendations for AV1 or H.265/HEVC:

Output Recommended AV1 or H.265 bitrate
720p at 60 fps 6 Mbps
1080p at 30 fps 10 Mbps
1080p at 60 fps 12 Mbps

These are platform configuration recommendations, not a promise that a particular connection or NAS will sustain the stream. Consult YouTube’s live encoder settings for the applicable codec, resolution, and frame-rate row.

3. Check encoder settings and health warnings

YouTube’s listed baseline settings include constant bitrate (CBR), a supported H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 codec, and a keyframe interval of two seconds; YouTube says not to exceed four seconds. It lists RTMP and RTMPS for ingest and recommends RTMPS for encrypted transmission. For audio, its page lists AAC or MP3. The encoder page supports up to 60 fps.

Do not change all settings at once. Confirm the output codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, CBR mode, and keyframe interval, then read the specific Live Control Room warning. YouTube’s API describes health statuses as good, ok, bad, and noData; its documentation identifies keyframe intervals longer than four seconds as a buffering risk.

4. Stabilize the network path

If the encoder or relevant network connection uses Wi-Fi, try wired Ethernet. OBS notes that Wi-Fi may be unstable for streaming and recommends a wired connection. If the setup is already wired, check that cable ends are seated and inspect the path through the router, switch, network card, or any extender. OBS identifies these devices, as well as cables, as possible fault points; that does not mean every stream needs new hardware.

5. Check NAS processing only when it is involved

Determine what the NAS does in this setup. If it only stores a video file that another device encodes and sends, NAS CPU is not automatically the cause of an outgoing YouTube connection problem. If the NAS itself encodes or transcodes the video, check whether that work can keep up with real time.

Plex’s guidance says its server can buffer during playback if it cannot transcode fast enough and notes that many home NAS devices have limited processors. That advice applies to Plex playback and transcoding; it is not evidence that a NAS is causing YouTube ingest buffering in every architecture. See Plex’s transcoding guidance if Plex is doing that processing.

6. Follow OBS’s persistent connection checks

If dropped frames or disconnections continue after lowering bitrate and checking the wired path, use OBS’s stream connection troubleshooting guide. Its checks include trying another ingest server or service where available, network-optimization settings, VPN or security-software interference, drivers, and hardware. If those checks do not resolve the problem, OBS advises contacting the ISP.

Common symptoms and what to try

What you observe What it suggests Next step
OBS’s dropped-frame counter increases The encoder-to-service connection may be unstable or unable to carry the configured bitrate. Lower bitrate, retest, and check the network path.
YouTube Live Control Room shows a configuration warning An encoder setting such as bitrate or keyframe interval may be unsuitable. Read the warning and compare the actual output with YouTube’s encoder guidance.
Only one viewer reports stalls while the outgoing stream looks healthy The symptom alone does not identify an encoder or NAS fault. Check whether other viewers and devices can play the stream before changing the encoder setup.
Buffering occurs while the NAS transcodes or encodes The NAS processing stage may be unable to sustain real-time work. Check processing load and whether the output is keeping pace; do not assume this applies if the NAS only stores the file.
Dropped frames persist after bitrate and wiring checks A network, software, driver, or hardware issue may remain. Use OBS’s connection troubleshooting checks and contact the ISP if they do not resolve it.

Protect the stream’s rights and channel eligibility

Reducing buffering does not resolve copyright or monetization issues. Before looping prerecorded material, make sure you have the necessary rights to the video and audio and review YouTube’s applicable live-stream and channel policies. A technically healthy, continuous stream is not evidence that its content qualifies for monetization or complies with platform rules.
