Then target the cause: limit background activity for apps you rarely use, reduce screen or connectivity demand where practical, or turn on Power saving when you need to stretch a charge. Menu names vary by Galaxy model and software version, so use the closest Battery or Device care options shown on your phone.
Find what is draining your Galaxy battery
Battery use varies with apps, settings, signal, and battery condition. Samsung notes that environmental conditions and background apps can contribute to faster drain, so changing settings without checking usage first may not address the cause.
- Open Settings and tap Battery. Depending on your model and software, look for battery usage details, a usage list, or a battery graph.
- Check which apps used the most power and when. Compare the usage with the times you noticed rapid drain; an app active during that period is a more useful lead than its overall position alone.
- If the menu labels differ, search Settings for “Battery” or “Device care.” Samsung’s battery troubleshooting guide covers model-dependent causes and checks.
Reduce background use without missing important alerts
Update apps and run Device care
Install available app updates, then open Settings > Device care and choose Optimize now if your phone offers it. The exact path and features vary. Device care can check the phone and close background apps, but use the Battery usage screen to identify recurring high consumption rather than treating optimization as a permanent fix.
Choose Sleeping or Deep sleeping app by app
Samsung’s Battery settings can let you put rarely used apps to sleep or add them to a Deep sleeping list. Sleeping limits background activity; a Deep sleeping app does not run until you open it. Those restrictions can delay refreshes and notifications, so do not place messaging, safety, authentication, or other time-sensitive apps into a restrictive list if you need their alerts promptly. Use Power saving when its restrictions make sense
Power saving reduces background activity and limits certain features to help extend use. It is useful when you need more time before charging, but the restrictions can affect connectivity, performance, and background updates. Samsung’s Canadian Power saving guide describes the mode and its feature limits.
Maximum power saving applies stronger restrictions and limits the apps or features available. Treat it as an emergency option for conserving remaining charge, not a setting with no functional cost. The available modes and wording can differ by model and software version.

Lower screen and connectivity demand where practical
- Brightness and screen timeout: Use adaptive brightness or lower the brightness to a comfortable level, and shorten the time before the screen turns off. A display that stays bright and on longer uses more power, though visibility and convenience matter too.
- Dark mode: On Galaxy phones with AMOLED displays, dark mode can reduce display power use. Its effect depends on the display and what is on screen; it is not a guaranteed fixed battery-life increase.
- Unused radios: Turn off Wi-Fi or Bluetooth when you are not using them, but leave connectivity enabled when you need it. Samsung’s battery-saving tips cover display and connectivity adjustments.
- Signal and mobile network: Weak reception can increase power use. Samsung’s US 5G battery guidance describes a network configuration where using 5G data alongside legacy-network connectivity may consume more power. That is network-dependent, not a rule that all 5G connections drain more battery; consider your own carrier coverage before changing network settings.
Consider the Light performance profile
Some Galaxy models offer a Light performance profile that prioritizes battery efficiency over processing speed for everyday use. Availability and effects vary by model and workload, so it may not suit demanding tasks. Samsung describes the profile in its battery and performance guidance.
Allow for setup activity, then investigate persistent drain
A newly set-up phone may use more power during the first few days as apps and services optimize. If drain continues, inspect Battery usage again and check for an app that is consuming unusually much power. Samsung’s older new-phone battery guidance describes Adaptive battery and setup-related behavior; the exact options available depend on the device and software.

If usage looks abnormal or the built-in checks do not explain it, use the support and reporting options in Samsung Members or contact Samsung support. Avoid installing a random “battery cleaner” in response to a pop-up warning: Samsung cautions that suspicious third-party alerts about fast battery drain may try to persuade users to install more software. Battery capacity declines with repeated charging and discharging, and settings cannot reverse that physical wear. Samsung describes the battery as a consumable component whose reduced capacity cannot be restored. If a Galaxy phone has persistent short runtime after you have checked software and usage, ask Samsung support about a battery health check and model-specific service options. A charger or power bank can replenish the phone, but it does not reduce the rate at which the phone uses power.
